Bettis XTE3000 Intelligent Multi-Turn Electric Actuator

Overview

The Bettis XTE3000 is an intelligent, non-intrusive multi-turn electric actuator from Emerson, designed for the valve automation demands of the oil and gas, power, municipal and process industries. It drives gate, globe and other multi-turn valves directly, and with Emerson’s range of worm, spur and scotch yoke gearboxes it also operates large quarter-turn ball and butterfly valves. A double-sealed terminal board, non-intrusive setup, data logging, predictive maintenance functions, an absolute position encoder, Bluetooth communication and an advanced display are all included as standard rather than as options.

Working Principle

The Bettis XTE3000 uses an electric motor with an integrated reversing starter to turn the valve through a simplified single-stage gear reduction to the output shaft. The gear train runs in an oil bath that lubricates the components for the whole service life of the actuator, without oil changes. An absolute encoder tracks valve position to within 0.1 percent of true position and continues to register movement even when mains and backup power are lost, so the actuator always knows where the valve is after a manual operation or power outage. A motor speed sensor and microprocessor record torque, while a thermostat on the motor trips it if overheating occurs.

Built-in protection logic in the Bettis XTE3000 guards the valve and actuator against jammed valves, sticky valves that resist unseating, motor overheating, repeated hammering against an obstruction and instantaneous reversal. Torque and position limits can be set as a function of valve position from 0 to 100 percent. An emergency shutdown signal can override all other commands and drive the valve to a preset position while main power is available, and a two-speed timer can stretch opening or closing time to limit surge in long pipelines.

Engineering Design of the Bettis XTE3000

The Bettis XTE3000 enclosure is a corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy with few joints, combined with cast-iron thrust bases and cast-iron reduction gears, using bronze worm wheels where appropriate for efficiency and life. The control enclosure holds the logic and power boards, reversing contactor and a non-intrusive local interface with three push-buttons, yellow, green and red LEDs and a local, remote and off selector. A handwheel with automatic declutch on motor start, and an optional 10:1 side-mounted bevel reducer, provide manual operation. An integrated heater protects the electronics in cold conditions.

For installation and maintenance of the Bettis XTE3000, the detachable thrust base can be mounted to the valve on its own, so the whole actuator does not need to be spun onto the stem. The open-frame motor is field replaceable without oil spillage because the motor compartment is separate from the gear oil bath. An integrated bypass unit lets the actuator be removed from a fieldbus loop without opening the network, and the multilingual display uses transflective LCD and OLED technology that stays readable in bright sunlight.
