Description

330102-00-38-05-02-05 3300 XL 8 mm Armored Proximity Probe

The Bently Nevada 330102-00-38-05-02-05 is a 3300 XL 8 mm proximity probe from the 330102 series: a forward-mounted probe with a 3/8-24 UNF threaded case and stainless steel armor over the cable. It is the standard 8 mm size used for radial vibration, shaft position and Keyphasor measurement on fluid-film bearing machines. Seven Star LLC supplies the 330102-00-38-05-02-05 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

This variant has 0.0 in of unthreaded length, a 3.8 in overall case and a 0.5 m (1.6 ft) lead. A 3.8 in case with a short 0.5 m lead is a compact probe. The short lead allows the connector pair to sit close to the machine, joined to a 4.5 m or 8.5 m extension cable, which is how many installations reach the 5 m or 9 m system lengths.

How to read part number 330102-00-38-05-02-05

The datasheet defines the 330102 probe as 330102-AA-BB-CC-DD-EE. Decoding strictly from the ordering table:

  • AA = 00: unthreaded length option, 0.0 in (ordered in 0.1 in steps; must be at least 0.8 in shorter than the case)
  • BB = 38: overall case length, 3.8 in (range 0.8 to 9.6 in)
  • CC = 05: total probe length, 0.5 m (1.6 ft)
  • DD = 02: Miniature coaxial ClickLoc connector, standard cable, without connector protector (option 02)
  • EE = 05: CSA, ATEX and IECEx approvals option

The 330102 prefix itself means a 3300 XL 8 mm probe, 3/8-24 UNF thread, with armor. The unarmored sibling of the same thread is the 330101, and the metric M10 x 1 equivalents are the 330103 and 330104.

The performance figures above are the datasheet values for the complete 3300 XL 8 mm system (probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor) measured at +18 to +27 °C against a 4140 steel target.

How the 330102-00-38-05-02-05 senses shaft motion

The Proximitor Sensor excites the coil in the probe tip with a high-frequency signal. A steel shaft near the tip draws energy out of the field and changes the coil loading according to the gap. The Proximitor converts this to a dc voltage that falls as the shaft approaches. The dc part gives average position or thrust, and the ac part gives dynamic vibration. Because it needs no contact, the probe can look straight at a rotating shaft, collar or keyway.

The armor on the 330102 does not change the electrical behaviour; it protects the cable. Armor is chosen where the lead runs in exposed pipework, near hot casings or where a technician may step on or drag it.

System fit and related parts for 330102-00-38-05-02-05

The probe works only with the 3300 XL 8 mm Proximitor Sensor (330180 series, offered in 1 m, 5 m and 9 m system lengths) and, for the 5 m and 9 m system lengths, a 330130 standard extension cable. With a 0.5 m (1.6 ft) lead, the extension cable length needed to reach the system length is the difference: 4.5 m for a 5 m system or 8.5 m for a 9 m system. Popular for installations where the junction box is near the bearing and the probe lead does not need to run far.

The datasheet notes that 3300 XL 8 mm components are electrically and physically interchangeable with non-XL 3300 5 mm and 8 mm components when the minimum bend radius is respected. Ordering checklist for 330102-00-38-05-02-05

  • Check the thread: 3/8-24 UNF is not the same as M10 x 1.
  • Measure the depth from the mounting face to the shaft and set case and unthreaded lengths accordingly.
  • Choose the lead length in relation to the Proximitor Sensor system length (5 m or 9 m).
  • Decide on armor, connector protector and cable type: this part uses connector option 02, so protectors are not included.
  • State if CSA, ATEX or IECEx approvals are needed; option 05 is the approvals variant.
  • Confirm that the Proximitor Sensor, extension cable and monitor are all from the 3300 XL generation.

Installation and maintenance of the 330102-00-38-05-02-05

Thread the probe into the housing and use the locknut with its pre-drilled holes for safety wire. Do not exceed the recommended torque. Set the gap using the dc voltage on the Proximitor output, starting near the mid-point of the linear range, and record the as-found voltage for later trend comparison. Join connectors finger tight and protect the joint from oil and moisture; wrap or fit protectors as appropriate.

During outages check the armor for kinks or crushed sections, look at the tip for scoring, and test the probe resistance against the datasheet values for the lead length. Keep at least one spare probe of each case length used on critical machines.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Eight-millimetre probes are fitted on the bearings of steam and gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, pumps and large motors across Oman and the GCC power, oil and gas, petrochemical and desalination plants. The armored version is popular in outdoor installations with high summer heat, sand and humidity, where cable routes are long and exposed. Standard probes handle temperatures up to 177 °C at the tip; the extended temperature variants are separate part numbers.

A proximity probe measures the gap to the shaft, so it sees shaft movement inside a fluid-film bearing directly. A velocity or acceleration sensor sits on the casing and suits rolling-element bearing machines. Critical turbomachinery usually carries two X-Y probes per bearing, two axial probes for thrust position and a Keyphasor probe for speed and phase.

Where Bently Nevada systems are used

In Oman and the GCC, Bently Nevada racks and probes protect gas turbines, compressors and steam turbines in gas processing, LNG, refining, petrochemical, power and desalination plants. Many installations are 3500 racks that have run for years, so most requests are for like-for-like module, probe, extension cable and proximitor replacements, plus upgrades to newer monitors.

Ordering and replacement: what we need

For probes and proximitors, send the full part number with all option digits (for example 330101-00-27-10-02-05). The digits set the probe length, cable length, connector and approvals, and the probe, cable and proximitor must match in total system length. For 3500 modules, send the module and I/O part numbers from the rack and say whether the I/O is internal or external termination, or barrier type. If a module is obsolete, we quote the replacement that Bently Nevada names and point out any configuration or firmware change.

FAQ

Questions about the Bently Nevada 330102-00-38-05-02-05 3300 XL 8 mm

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What thread does the 330102-00-38-05-02-05 use?
The 330102 series has a 3/8-24 UNF thread and stainless steel armor on the cable. The maximum thread engagement for this thread is 0.563 in.
02How long is the lead of 330102-00-38-05-02-05?
The third block, 05, means a total probe length of 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Systems are built to 5 m or 9 m including the extension cable, so the probe is normally joined to an extension cable of the right length.
03What is the linear range?
The 3300 XL 8 mm system has a linear range of 2 mm (80 mils) from 0.25 to 2.3 mm, with a scale factor of 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil). The recommended gap for radial vibration is about 1.27 mm.
04What target size is needed?
The datasheet lists a minimum flat target diameter of 15.2 mm and a minimum shaft diameter of 50.8 mm, with 76.2 mm recommended. Smaller shafts change the scale factor.
05What does the armor change?
The armor protects the probe lead against mechanical damage. It does not change the electrical specification but it increases weight and has the same 25.4 mm minimum bend radius.
