Pepperl+Fuchs UPR-03 Universal Power Rail, 3 Conductors, 2 m

Description

UPR-03 Universal Power Rail for K-System isolators

The UPR-03 is a 2 metre section of 35 mm DIN mounting rail with a three-conductor insert, supplied with end caps and a cover. It distributes 24 V DC to all K-System modules that are clipped onto it and carries a collective error signal on the third conductor. The rail eliminates the daisy-chained supply wiring that otherwise has to be added to every module in a row.

Seven Star LLC supplies the UPR-03 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. This page lists the components, ratings and design rules.

What UPR-03 consists of

The UPR-03 is the type designation of the Universal Power Rail with end caps and cover, 3 conductors, length 2 m. The datasheet describes the Power Rail as a DIN mounting rail UPR-MR with an insert UPR-INS-03. Two conductors carry the supply, one conductor carries the collective error message. The UPR-03 is delivered with two UPR-E end caps and a UPR-COVER cover; all components can be ordered separately.

Shorter lengths exist: the UPR-03-M is 1.6 m and the UPR-03-S is 0.8 m, as listed in the datasheets of the K-System modules. The component comes in 2 m segments and can be cut to any size.

How the UPR-03 simplifies wiring

Each module that is clipped on has contacts that touch the conductors of the insert. The power comes through the rail, and any module can pull the error line low in the event of a fault. The power feed module at the start of the rail, such as the KFD2-EB2, supplies the rail and converts the error line into a relay contact. This approach makes it simple to add another isolator later: just snap it on.

The datasheet advises covering open, empty segments with the supplied cover. This protects the conductors from pollution and prevents accidental contact with live parts.

Rail planning with the UPR-03

Rail current is limited to 4 A, and the supply module must be sized for the total current. For long rows, split the rail with UPR-I insulation spacers and feed each section with a power feed module. The KFD2-STC5-1, KFD2-USC-1.D, KFD2-GUT-1.D and KCD2-SR-2 are examples of modules that take their supply from the rail.

Accessories listed on the datasheet are UPR-E end caps, UPR-I insulation spacers, UPR-MR 35 mm rail in 2 m lengths (pack of 2), UPR-INS-03 insert and UPR-COVER.

Selection and ordering checklist for the UPR-03

  • Number of modules and their widths to determine rail length (2 m, 1.6 m or 0.8 m)
  • Total supply current vs 4 A
  • Need for insulation spacers and separate feed zones
  • Spare end caps and covers
  • Mounting plate preparation: M4 mounting holes
  • Cabinet ambient range

Mounting the UPR-03

Fix the rail to the mounting plate with M4 screws and washers, push the insert into the slot, fit the end caps and place the cover over any unused part. Cut the rail to length if necessary, taking care that the cut ends of the insert are covered by end caps.

During maintenance, check that the cover is in place after modules are removed, and that no metal swarf or dirt has fallen on exposed conductors.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Rail length and module count are often decided late in a project, because instrument lists grow. Ordering the rail with one or two extra segments, and fitting the covers on empty sections, makes later expansion a matter of snapping in new modules. The rail is used in marshalling and control cabinets in oil and gas facilities, power plants and desalination plants, where several dozen isolators are installed. Reduced wiring lowers installation cost and means fewer terminals to loosen from vibration. Fault-line diagnostics make a rail installation easier to supervise than isolated modules.

Mechanical points are worth planning as well. The rail is 35 mm wide and 15 mm high, so check the mounting plate clearance and the cabinet door depth together with the module depth of 114 to 115 mm quoted in the module datasheets. Mount it with M4 screws and washers at regular intervals so that the insert is well supported and the rail does not flex when modules are removed and inserted.

About brand

Pepperl+Fuchs is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion protection equipment, founded in 1945 in Mannheim by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs as a radio repair shop. Defective transformers led them into manufacturing, and the company developed its first proximity switch in the late 1950s. Pepperl+Fuchs is headquartered in Mannheim and is a pioneer of intrinsically safe electrical equipment for hazardous areas.

Seven Star LLC lists Pepperl+Fuchs sensors, isolated barriers, power supplies and hazardous-area mobile devices, and supplies them to instrument and automation teams in Oman by exact model designation.

Where Pepperl+Fuchs equipment is used

Isolated barriers sit between field instruments in Zone 0 or Zone 1 and the DCS or safety system in refineries, gas plants and chemical works. NAMUR sensors report valve position and machine states in classified areas. Photoelectric sensors and LiDAR scanners work in conveying, packaging, warehousing and vehicle guidance. Ex-rated tablets and phones are carried on operator rounds and maintenance jobs.

Ordering Pepperl+Fuchs parts: what we need

Send the complete model designation as printed on the device, including every suffix; a single letter can change the supply voltage or the output type. Add the part number if the label shows one. For barriers, tell us the field device and signal type, the number of channels and whether the safety loop needs a SIL-assessed module. For mobile devices, state the zone or division and the regional radio version.
