WIKA PG23LT POLARgauge Low-Temperature Pressure Gauge -70 C

Description

WIKA PG23LT POLARgauge low-temperature stainless steel pressure gauge to -70 °C

The WIKA PG23LT is a liquid-filled stainless steel Bourdon tube pressure gauge designed for outdoor measuring points where the ambient temperature can fall as low as -70 °C [-94 °F]. WIKA markets this construction under the POLARgauge name. The manufacturer mentions cold regions such as Russia, Canada, Scandinavia and China, and primarily oil, gas, chemical and petrochemical duty on pipelines and pumping stations. Seven Star LLC supplies the PG23LT in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; for Gulf projects it is typically requested for export pipelines, cold-climate equipment shipped from the Gulf, or cryogenic-adjacent installations where a standard silicone-filled gauge is not rated. This page explains what the model contains and what to specify.

What makes the PG23LT a low-temperature gauge

Three design measures are named in the data sheet. First, the special low-temperature design of the instrument. Second, the use of special seals. Third, a silicone oil case filling that remains fluid at low temperature. Together they allow the gauge to work outdoors down to -70 °C. WIKA states that the proof of suitability was produced in its own laboratory and can optionally be confirmed by a 2.2 test report, which is a useful document for projects where the specification asks for evidence of cold-climate suitability.

The same design satisfies ingress protection IP66 and IP67 for scale ranges above 0 … 40 bar. Ranges up to 40 bar are IP65 and use a compensating valve to vent the filled case.

Pressure limits and options for the PG23LT

The pressure limitation depends on size. NS 63 allows steady load to three quarters of full scale and fluctuating load to two thirds. NS 100 and 160 allow steady full scale, fluctuating load to 0.9 times and short-time load to 1.3 times full scale. Options listed include sealings for the process connection (WIKA model 910.17, stainless steel recommended as the sealing material), safety level S3 with solid baffle wall and blow-out back for lower mount, panel or surface mounting flanges in stainless steel, a red mark on the dial, and an adjustable mark pointer on the bayonet ring for NS 100.

Approvals on the data sheet include the EU declaration of conformity (pressure equipment, PS above 200 bar module A) and, as options, ATEX ignition protection type c, EAC, GOST, KazInMetr, UkrSEPRO and Uzstandard. Certificates offered are the 2.2 test report for low-temperature capability, a 2.2 test report for manufacturing and accuracy, and a 3.1 inspection certificate.

Where the PG23LT fits and related WIKA gauges

The PG23LT is the cold-climate sibling of the stainless steel 232.50 standard gauge and the 232.30 safety gauge, which the data sheet names as similar products. If your site never sees temperatures below those of standard silicone-filled gauges, the 232.50 or the 213.53 are simpler choices. The PG23LT belongs in the line with isolation (910.10 stopcock or 910.11 valve), pulsation protection (910.12 snubber) and sealing rings of stainless steel (910.17), because ordinary copper washers and soft seals may not match the low-temperature design.

Selection and ordering checklist for the PG23LT

  • Lowest ambient temperature actually expected at the measuring point.
  • Nominal size, accuracy class and scale range.
  • Connection thread and location; note that G 1/4 B is NS 63 only.
  • Safety level S3 if the specification demands a solid baffle wall.
  • Mounting flange or mark pointer requirements.
  • Whether a 2.2 test report for -70 °C capability is needed.
  • Ex or other regional approvals.

Installation and maintenance of the PG23LT

Install the gauge with stainless steel sealing rings and tighten on the wrench flats. Where a vent valve is fitted (ranges up to 40 bar), leave it closed in service after the filled case has equalised. Avoid mounting orientation that lets condensate collect against the pressure connection. Because frozen process media can damage any Bourdon tube, make sure the line to the gauge is not able to freeze solid; for water-based media at low ambient, a diaphragm seal or heat tracing is the safer design. Inspect the window and ring seals at each shutdown; hairline cracks or a changed oil level show that the instrument has reached the end of its service life.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Oman and the Gulf do not often see the temperatures for which the PG23LT is made, so the typical Seven Star LLC enquiry comes from project scopes that ship equipment to cold regions, from contractors with international specifications, and from oil and gas export or pipeline work whose standard specifies a low-temperature rated indicator. The all-stainless, IP66/67 build is also useful in hot, dusty and humid coastal sites, and the safety version fits plant that wants solid baffle protection for operators.

About brand

WIKA is the German manufacturer of pressure, temperature, level and flow instruments, best known for its pressure gauges. Alexander Wiegand and Philipp Kachel founded it on 2 January 1946 in Klingenberg am Main, Bavaria. The name comes from the first two letters of their surnames. WIKA is still run by the Wiegand family and is headquartered in Klingenberg.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list WIKA pressure gauges, diaphragm seals, transmitters, switches, thermometers and thermowells, and supply them to plants, contractors and panel builders in Oman and the GCC by model and order code.

The WIKA model number tells you the build. In 232.50, the first digit 2 means stainless steel wetted parts, the second digit 3 means a liquid-fillable case, and ".50" is the case style. The 111 series uses copper alloy wetted parts and suits water and air. Where the medium is corrosive, very hot or would block the gauge, a diaphragm seal such as the 990.27 keeps it away from the Bourdon tube. For temperature, a thermowell like the TW10 lets you remove the sensor without opening the process.

Where WIKA instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, WIKA gauges, transmitters and thermometers are used in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, power and desalination, water networks, district cooling and HVAC, and on skids and machines from OEMs.

Ordering WIKA instruments: what we need

Send the model, dial size (for example 63, 100 or 160 mm), range and unit, connection size and position (lower or back mount), accuracy class and whether liquid filling is needed. For diaphragm seals and thermowells, add the process connection, materials and insertion length.
