Samson 4746 Limit Switch, Inductive, Electric or Pneumatic

Description

Samson 4746 limit switch: inductive, electric or pneumatic contacts

The Samson 4746 is a limit switch for control valves and for Samson positioners. It reports when the valve stem passes an adjusted limit, either with inductive contacts, electric changeover contacts or pneumatic contacts, so one product family covers electrical, intrinsically safe and air-only installations. It attaches to pneumatic or electric control valves with cast or rod-type yokes according to IEC 60534-6, and to Type 4763 electropneumatic and Type 4765 pneumatic positioners. Rated travel runs from 7.5 to 180 mm. Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 4746 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Each unit carries two limit contacts that do not influence each other. Both can be set as normally closed or normally open, and all of them can be overridden, which is useful during commissioning.

4746 versions explained

Version Description
4746-x2 Inductive contacts with non-contact pick-up using metal tags and proximity switches according to EN 60947-5-6; a three-wire variant (SB3,5-E2, 10 to 30 V) has an integrated amplifier
4746-x3 Electric double-throw switches with friction snap-action contacts, silver or gold plated
4746-04 Pneumatic contacts with downstream pneumatic microswitches for air-only signalling
4746-1 Intrinsically safe version, II 2G Ex ia IIC T6
4746-8 Non-sparking version, II 3G Ex nA II T6 for Zone 2

The first position of the article code selects explosion protection: without, ATEX Ex ia, CSA, FM or ATEX Ex nA. The next positions select design, contact type and the number of switching elements (one or two). The datasheet lists proximity switch choices SC3,5-N0-YE, SC3,5-N0-WH, SJ3,5-SN and SJ3,5-S1N, and the electric microswitches XGK 3 (silver) and XGK3-81 (gold plated).

How the 4746 detects valve position

The valve travel is passed to a pin and lever of the limit switch, either directly from a plate on the stem or through a coupling pin when a positioner is fitted. The shaft turns the linear travel into a rotary movement. On the inductive version, adjustable metal tags move into or out of the field of the proximity switches. On the electric version, cam disks press a roller on the switch lever. On the pneumatic version, the cam disk operates a nozzle and flapper system whose pressure reverses the pneumatic microswitch.

Every version has a small hysteresis that depends on the lever length, which prevents chattering when the stem sits near the limit: for example 0.15 mm (inductive), 0.6 mm (electric) and 0.75 mm (pneumatic) at 50 mm lever length, rising to 0.30, 1.0 and 1.5 mm at 120 mm.

Hazardous area information for the 4746-1 and 4746-8

Intrinsically safe units are connected to certified intrinsically safe circuits. Typical values for the inductive 4746-12 are Ui 16 V and Pi 169 mW or 64 mW depending on the sensor, and the electric 4746-13 is rated for Ui 45 V and 2 W. Temperature classes T4 to T6 bring different ambient limits, for example T6 up to +45 °C on one inductive variant. The datasheet gives ATEX, CSA, FM, CCC, NEPSI, KCS and Eurasian approvals for specific sub-types, so always check the certificate that applies to the exact code before use in a classified area.

Selection and ordering checklist for the 4746

  • Contact type: inductive, electric or pneumatic.
  • Hazardous area need: none, Ex ia, Ex nA, or a North American approval.
  • Valve yoke style (cast or rod type) and travel, to choose lever I or II.
  • Attachment to a Type 4763 or 4765 positioner, which needs a special lever.
  • Proximity switch type and NC or NO function, including the safety-circuit versions.
  • One or two switching elements.
  • Ambient temperature, remembering the lower limits with plastic glands.
  • Electrical thread: M20x1.5 or an adapter for ½ NPT.

Installation and commissioning of the 4746

Use the mounting parts that match the valve yoke or positioner. Fix the unit on the NAMUR rib with the M8 screw, set the lever length for the valve travel and adjust each contact with the adjustment screw while the valve is in position. Check that metal tags or cam disks move clear of each other if both contacts are used. In dusty or humid Gulf plants make sure the cable gland is tightened onto the correct cable diameter so that the IP 65 rating is kept. Pneumatic versions need clean, dry air at the stated supply pressure.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The 4746 appears on control valves in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, power and desalination plants where position feedback is needed for interlocks, partial stroke testing or alarm logic. Gulf plants typically specify Ex ia versions for Zone 1 areas and use the pneumatic version where no electrical signal is allowed or desired. High temperatures near hot piping make the +100 °C proximity sensors useful.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.
