Bently Nevada 146031-02 3500/22M 100Base-FX I/O Module
Description
Bently Nevada 146031-02 3500/22M 100Base-FX fiber-optic I/O module
The Bently Nevada 146031-02 is the rear I/O module of the 3500/22M Transient Data Interface that provides a 100Base-FX fiber-optic Ethernet port. In the ordering code of the 3500/22M this is I/O type 02; the copper alternative is type 01 (part 146031-01). The module slides into the full-height rear slot opposite the TDI main module and brings out the fiber port, the OK relay and the system contacts.
Fiber is chosen when the cable run from the machinery rack to the control building is long, crosses areas with heavy electrical noise or must be galvanically separated from the network. Seven Star LLC supplies this module to plants in Oman and the GCC for new racks and for conversions from copper to fiber.

Fiber link: what to plan for
A 100Base-FX link uses a fiber pair between the rack and a media converter or switch. The datasheet requires MT-RJ female connectors on the cable that mates with the module, so most sites order a patch lead or a custom cable with MT-RJ on one end and the connector type of their switch on the other. Fiber distance is not given in the datasheet for this module, so take the permitted length from the specification of your switch or media converter and the fiber grade installed.
Because there is no copper path, the fiber port is useful where the machinery rack and the control room sit on different ground references. It does not remove the need to follow the 3500 Hardening Guide for network security.
Compatibility and related part numbers
The 146031-02 pairs with the 3500/22M main module, for example 138607-01 or the kit 288055-01. It must not be mixed up with 125768-01 or 135031-01, which are I/O modules of the older 3500/20 RIM. The manufacturer warns that leaving a RIM I/O in the rack while a TDI is inserted can damage the TDI, so a TDI upgrade always replaces both parts. 146031-01 is the copper equivalent; 146031-03 and 146031-04 are the gold-plated OK-relay versions of copper and fiber.
Selection and ordering checklist for 146031-02
- Confirm the network design: fiber port with a media converter or managed switch.
- Verify the connector type needed on the switch side and order the MT-RJ patch cable.
- Decide between standard and gold-plated relay contacts. Gold-plated contacts suit low-level signals down to 1 mA at 1 Vdc.
- Check the agency approval of the whole 3500/22M assembly for the installation area.
- Make sure the main TDI module is a 3500/22M and not a 3500/20 RIM.
Installation and maintenance
Fit the I/O module in the rear slot before inserting the TDI front module. Keep the fiber port capped until the cable is ready, clean the MT-RJ ferrule with a lint-free fiber wipe, and avoid bending the fiber tighter than the cable specification allows. After power-up check that link lights on the switch or converter show a connection and that System 1 or the configuration software finds the rack at its address. Wire the OK relay into your annunciator and test it by removing a module in a controlled test.
Where it is used in Oman and the GCC
Fiber Ethernet is common on large compressor trains, power blocks and desalination units where the machinery is hundreds of metres from the control room. Heat, dust and electrical noise from variable speed drives all favour optical links. Spare I/O modules are small and light, so many operators hold one per rack type on site.
3500/22M I/O module comparison
| Part number | Interface and relay |
|---|---|
| 146031-01 | 10Base-T/100Base-TX copper, standard OK relay |
| 146031-02 | 100Base-FX fiber, standard OK relay (this item) |
| 146031-03 | Copper, gold-plated OK relay contacts |
| 146031-04 | Fiber, gold-plated OK relay contacts |
Cable, switch and spare considerations for 146031-02
Fiber links fail most often at the connectors, not in the glass. Plan one spare MT-RJ patch cable and a cleaning kit alongside each 146031-02 spare. Match the media converter or switch port type (100Base-FX, same wavelength and fiber grade) to the module, and label both ends of the link with the rack number. A fiber port that shows no link light is usually a reversed transmit and receive pair, which can be corrected by swapping the two strands at one end.
The module also exposes the OK relay and the system contacts used for Trip Multiply and Alarm Inhibit, so check those terminal connections after the module is replaced. A relay wired into the plant annunciator must be tested again after any I/O swap to prove that a NOT OK condition still reaches the control room.

A proximity probe measures the gap to the shaft, so it sees shaft movement inside a fluid-film bearing directly. A velocity or acceleration sensor sits on the casing and suits rolling-element bearing machines. Critical turbomachinery usually carries two X-Y probes per bearing, two axial probes for thrust position and a Keyphasor probe for speed and phase.
Where Bently Nevada systems are used
In Oman and the GCC, Bently Nevada racks and probes protect gas turbines, compressors and steam turbines in gas processing, LNG, refining, petrochemical, power and desalination plants. Many installations are 3500 racks that have run for years, so most requests are for like-for-like module, probe, extension cable and proximitor replacements, plus upgrades to newer monitors.
Ordering and replacement: what we need
For probes and proximitors, send the full part number with all option digits (for example 330101-00-27-10-02-05). The digits set the probe length, cable length, connector and approvals, and the probe, cable and proximitor must match in total system length. For 3500 modules, send the module and I/O part numbers from the rack and say whether the I/O is internal or external termination, or barrier type. If a module is obsolete, we quote the replacement that Bently Nevada names and point out any configuration or firmware change.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is the rear I/O module of the 3500/22M that provides the 100Base-FX fiber Ethernet port, the OK relay and the system contacts for the rack.
The module has an MT-RJ male connector, so the mating cable needs MT-RJ female connectors, as stated in the datasheet.
146031-01 is the copper 10Base-T/100Base-TX version. 146031-02 carries a fiber port. The rest of the 3500/22M functions are the same.
No. It belongs to the 3500/22M TDI. Leaving a RIM I/O in the rack while inserting a TDI can damage the TDI.
Yes, 146031-04 is the fiber I/O module with gold-plated OK relay contacts, rated down to 1 mA at 1 Vdc.
