Bently Nevada 138607-01 3500/22M TDI Main Module

Description

Bently Nevada 138607-01 3500/22M standard TDI module for the 3500 rack

The Bently Nevada 138607-01 is the main board of the 3500/22M Transient Data Interface, the module that takes Slot 1 of a 3500 machinery protection rack and links the rack to a host computer over Ethernet. In the ordering structure published by the manufacturer the 3500/22M is built from a TDI type, an I/O module type and an agency approval code. The main module carries the processing, the front-panel controls and the rack-wide functions; the I/O module that plugs in behind it decides whether the Ethernet link is copper or fiber.

Seven Star LLC supplies this module in Oman and the GCC as a replacement or expansion spare for existing 3500 racks. The part number is the one commonly used for the standard TDI main module; confirm it against the label on the board in your rack before ordering, because the I/O module and the dynamic data enabling disk are separate items.

Values are taken from the 3500/22M datasheet. Approvals depend on the I/O module and the agency option chosen at ordering, so they are not a property of the main board alone.

What the 138607-01 does inside the rack

A 3500 rack needs one interface module, and the 3500/22M combines the job of the older 3500/20 Rack Interface Module with the data collection normally done by an external communication processor. It sits next to the power supplies and talks to the monitor modules (3500/40M, 3500/42M and the other M-series monitors) across the rack backplane. Static values are always available. With an optional channel enabling disk it also gathers dynamic waveform data and transient data during startup and coast-down, then streams everything to the host over Ethernet.

The module is not part of the protection path. Alarm decisions are made in the monitors, so replacing or reconfiguring the TDI does not change how a trip is generated. It does, however, hold the rack-wide controls: the rack reset, the address switch with 127 possible addresses, and the keylock that selects RUN or PROGRAM mode. In RUN mode configuration changes are locked out; PROGRAM mode permits local or remote reconfiguration.

Compatible modules and related part numbers

The 138607-01 is the main board only. It is paired with an I/O module: 146031-01 for 10Base-T/100Base-TX copper, 146031-02 for 100Base-FX fiber, and the gold-plated variants 146031-03 and 146031-04. The same datasheet lists 288055-01 as the standard TDI module supplied with a USB cable. Racks upgrading from a 3500/20 RIM should check that the installed M-series monitors are supported, because the manufacturer warns that some monitors are not compatible with the 3500/22.

Related but separate parts include the 3500/22M 100Base-FX I/O module 146031-02 and the older 3500/20 data manager I/O board 125760-01, which belong to different rack-interface generations and are not interchangeable with the TDI I/O.

Selection and ordering checklist for 138607-01

  • Confirm the rack already runs, or will run, M-series monitors and System 1 or 3500 Configuration software that supports the 3500/22M.
  • Decide between copper and fiber Ethernet, which fixes the I/O module you must buy with the main board.
  • Check whether a dynamic data enabling disk is needed. The disk sets how many steady-state and transient points are available; the sum of both fields must not exceed 672.
  • State the agency approval needed (none, CSA/NRTL/C Class 1 Division 2, or multi-approval CSA/ATEX/IECEx).
  • Confirm the rack firmware and the 3500/22M firmware revision are compatible before a field swap.
  • Ask for the condition: new, new surplus or tested spare.

Installation, commissioning and care

Follow the upgrade sequence in the datasheet whenever a TDI replaces a RIM: remove the RIM, remove the RIM I/O, insert the TDI I/O, then insert the TDI. Leaving the old RIM I/O in the rack can damage the new TDI. Use anti-static handling, record the rack address switch setting, and confirm the configuration with the keylock in PROGRAM before returning it to RUN.

After power-up check the OK, TX/RX and CONFIG OK LEDs, then connect with the 3500 configuration software and verify that the configuration read back from the rack matches the saved file. The module has a battery listed in the datasheet environmental section, so include a stored-configuration backup in your maintenance routine.

Typical use in Oman and the GCC

3500 racks protect compressors, steam and gas turbines, pumps and fans in oil and gas, power generation, desalination and petrochemical plants across the region. In those plants the TDI is what lets the reliability team see startup transients and alarm captures from the control room or a remote diagnostic centre. Hot, dusty or humid switch rooms are normally handled at the cabinet level, so keep the rack within the -30°C to +65°C limit and avoid condensation when equipment is moved from air-conditioned stores.

288055-01 Standard TDI supplied with a USB cable
146031-01 10Base-T/100Base-TX I/O module

Handling and spares planning for 138607-01

Keep at least one tested 138607-01 on site when the rack feeds a remote diagnostic centre, because the TDI is the single path for Ethernet data from a 3500 rack. Store it in its anti-static bag at a stable temperature, away from direct sun and humidity. When you plan a spare, note the I/O module and the dynamic data enabling disk that go with the 138607-01, since a rack that received a new TDI without its disk will only deliver static data until the disk is available again. Record the serial number and firmware revision of every installed module in the plant asset register so that a replacement can be matched quickly.

If the rack is part of a larger network, agree the IP addressing and the 3500 Hardening Guide measures with your IT and cyber-security team before the 138607-01 goes live.

A proximity probe measures the gap to the shaft, so it sees shaft movement inside a fluid-film bearing directly. A velocity or acceleration sensor sits on the casing and suits rolling-element bearing machines. Critical turbomachinery usually carries two X-Y probes per bearing, two axial probes for thrust position and a Keyphasor probe for speed and phase.

Where Bently Nevada systems are used

In Oman and the GCC, Bently Nevada racks and probes protect gas turbines, compressors and steam turbines in gas processing, LNG, refining, petrochemical, power and desalination plants. Many installations are 3500 racks that have run for years, so most requests are for like-for-like module, probe, extension cable and proximitor replacements, plus upgrades to newer monitors.

Ordering and replacement: what we need

For probes and proximitors, send the full part number with all option digits (for example 330101-00-27-10-02-05). The digits set the probe length, cable length, connector and approvals, and the probe, cable and proximitor must match in total system length. For 3500 modules, send the module and I/O part numbers from the rack and say whether the I/O is internal or external termination, or barrier type. If a module is obsolete, we quote the replacement that Bently Nevada names and point out any configuration or firmware change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bently Nevada 138607-01?
It is the main board of the 3500/22M Transient Data Interface for the 3500 rack. It occupies Slot 1 and carries the processor, front-panel controls and rack-wide functions. An I/O module is fitted behind it.
Does the 138607-01 include the Ethernet I/O module?
No. The Ethernet connection comes from the separate I/O module, 146031-01 for copper or 146031-02 for fiber. Both must be fitted for the TDI to communicate.
Is the TDI part of the protection path?
No. The datasheet states that the TDI is not in the critical monitoring path. Monitor modules make alarm decisions, so a TDI fault does not stop protection from operating.
What does the dynamic data enabling disk do?
It sets how many channels of steady-state and transient waveform data the TDI can collect. The two fields together may not exceed 672, and one disk can serve several TDIs.
Can it replace a 3500/20 RIM?
Yes in most racks, but follow the datasheet order of removal and check that the installed M-series monitors are compatible with the 3500/22 before upgrading.
