Danfoss 068Z2900 TE 2 Thermostatic Expansion Valve R744 (CO2)

Description

TE 2 for R744: a CO2 thermostatic expansion valve built for 90 bar

Danfoss 068Z2900 is a TE 2 thermostatic expansion valve intended for R744 (carbon dioxide) refrigerant. CO2 sub-critical and cascade circuits run at much higher pressures than HFC systems, and this valve has a maximum working pressure of 90 bar (1305 psig), a brass body and a flare inlet of 3/8 in, with a 1/2 in solder outlet and a 1/4 in solder equalizer connection.

The MOP point is 5 C (561 psig), the evaporating range is -40 to 0 C, static superheat is set to 3 C with adjustable superheat, and the valve is externally equalized with a 1.5 m capillary. The body is angleway and single-flow, and the 90 bar rating is what separates it from the TE 2 versions made for HFC refrigerants.

CO2 refrigeration and cascade use

TE 2 valves are used on the low-temperature side of CO2 cascade systems and in sub-critical CO2 evaporators, where the liquid is fed from a receiver at a controlled pressure. Single-flow means the valve is not for reversing heat-pump circuits. UL lists the valve for R744.

Because CO2 pressures change quickly with temperature, the capacity at the actual liquid temperature and differential matters more than the nominal value. The Danfoss data sheet gives capacity tables for R744 at several evaporating temperatures and pressure drops; use them rather than HFC figures.

Fitting and ordering notes

The valve data sheet also contains a chart of capacity against evaporating temperature and valve pressure drop for R744, plus the superheat adjustment curve. Flare inlet connections must be torqued as given in the installation guide for TE 2 on R744, and the bulb needs a good thermal contact on a clean suction line. Pressure test the circuit within the working pressure of every component; the valve is not a pressure relief device.

Confirm that the charge and MOP point match your design, and that the connection types (flare inlet, solder outlet) match your line preparation. TXV spare parts are listed on the page for this type.

Other types and sizes from the same Danfoss family that appear in the Danfoss store listing include TE 12 (067B2512), TE 5 (067B3238), TE 20 (067B3274), TE 55 (067G3205). These are listed for orientation only; each has its own datasheet values, so check size, connection and version before ordering.

About brand

Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Milestones

  • 1932–1933: First expansion valve; the company is founded in Nordborg.
  • 1939: 26 employees. By the 10th anniversary in 1943 the company has 179.
  • 1950s: Rapid growth turns Nordborg into a Danfoss town with housing and schools for its workforce.
  • 1968: Danfoss launches its VLT frequency converter, one of the first mass-produced AC drives.
  • 2014: Acquisition of the Finnish drives maker Vacon, now the VACON brand.
  • 2021: Acquisition of Eaton's hydraulics business.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.

Where Danfoss products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
