Brand:

SMC ZU07S In-line Vacuum Ejector 0.7 mm Nozzle, High Vacuum

Description

A tiny resin ejector that sits in the vacuum line

ZU07S is a vacuum ejector of the in-line type from the SMC ZU series. The supply port and the vacuum port lie on one axis, so the ejector can be dropped into a tube run without a manifold or a bracket. The body is made of resin and weighs 7.0 g, which is why it is used right beside a suction pad on a moving head, where weight matters.

In the code, ZU is the series, 07 is the 0.7 mm nozzle diameter and S is the high-vacuum type that reaches -84 kPa (the L type is a large-flow type that gives less vacuum and moves more air). The one-touch fittings are built into the body and take 6 mm tube on both the supply (SUP) and the vacuum (VAC) port.

Reading the flow and consumption figures

An ejector turns compressed air into vacuum, so each figure has a price. At 0.45 MPa the ZU07S uses 29 L/min of air to pull a maximum of 10 L/min of free air through the pad. That ratio is the reason to select the smallest nozzle that lifts the part in the required time, and to switch the air off once the part is held and the pad is sealed.

The high-vacuum S type suits non-porous parts, such as glass, sheet metal or moulded plastic parts that seal the pad fully. For porous parts or leaking pads the large-flow type is the better choice, because it keeps more flow at a lower vacuum. The 0.5 mm nozzle ZU05S uses 14 L/min instead of 29 L/min and gives 7 L/min of suction.

Installation notes

Keep the supply air clean and dry, because the nozzle is small and a particle can block it. The exhaust leaves through a diffuser at the side of the body, and the catalogue shows the exhaust (EXH) port, which must be left open to atmosphere: a blocked or restricted exhaust ruins the vacuum. Mount the ejector as close to the pad as practical to shorten the vacuum tube and to speed up the response.

The supply pressure is best held near the standard 0.45 MPa; the catalogue graphs show how vacuum and air use change with supply pressure, and above the optimum the vacuum does not rise further while consumption does.

ZU07S and its successor, the ZU07SA

The ZU07S belongs to the original SMC ZU in-line ejector range. SMC has since introduced the ZU□A series as the newer version of this design, and the current equivalent of the ZU07S is the ZU07SA. The ZU-A body is shorter, slimmer and lighter, while it keeps the same in-line layout, the Ø6 mm one-touch connections and the S/L choice of vacuum type. The figures below come from the SMC ZU-A catalogue and are representative values at the standard supply pressure.

Item ZU07SA (current ZU-A series)
Nozzle diameter 0.7 mm
Standard supply pressure 0.45 MPa
Operating pressure range 0.1 to 0.6 MPa
Ultimate vacuum pressure (type S) –90 kPa
Maximum suction flow rate (type S) 11 L/min (ANR)
Air consumption 28 L/min (ANR)
Port size Ø6 mm one-touch (Nil) or Rc1/8 screw-in (01)
Overall length / body O.D. 59 mm / Ø10.4 mm (one-touch type)
Weight 4.3 g (one-touch) / 19.1 g (screw-in)
Operating temperature –5 to 50°C, no freezing
Applicable tube material FEP, PFA, nylon, soft nylon, polyurethane
Body / diffuser / seals Resin / resin / NBR

Because the specifications of the two generations are not identical, check vacuum level, flow and mounting length when replacing a ZU07S with a ZU07SA on an existing machine.

How It Works

Compressed air enters the SUP port and accelerates through the 0.7 mm nozzle. The high-speed jet entrains air from the VAC port, and the mixed stream slows down in the diffuser and leaves through the exhaust at the centre of the body. With no moving parts, the ejector produces vacuum the moment air is supplied and stops as soon as the supply valve closes, which makes it simple and quick to control.

Selection & Ordering Guide

  • ZU – in-line vacuum ejector series.
  • 07 – 0.7 mm nozzle (03, 04 and 05 are smaller sizes in the ZU-A range).
  • S – high-vacuum type; L – large-flow type for porous parts.
  • A – ZU-A generation (current); followed by the port symbol (Nil = Ø6 one-touch, 01 = Rc1/8).

The supply valve must deliver enough air for the ejector: the ZU-A catalogue recommends a C factor of at least 0.23 dm³/(s·bar) for the ZU07 size. Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code.

Installation & Maintenance

  • Support the tubes on both the P and V sides so that no load is carried by the ejector body.
  • Do not block the exhaust port at the centre of the body.
  • Use tube of the standard 6 mm size; a smaller bore reduces suction flow and vacuum.
  • Supply clean air; SMC recommends ISO 8573-1:2010 air quality class 2:4:3, 2:5:3 or 2:6:3. Dirt can clog the nozzle or the exhaust.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

The ZU07S is used for pick-and-place of sheet metal, glass, labels and moulded parts on packaging, assembly and printing machines, mounted on the end of a Z-axis cylinder close to the pad for fast response.

About brand

SMC is the Japanese specialist in pneumatic automation: air preparation units, solenoid valves, cylinders, fittings, process valves and sensors. Yoshiyuki Takada founded the company in Tokyo on 27 April 1959 as Shoketsu Kinzoku Kogyo, which means Sintered Metal Corporation, and its first products were sintered metal filters. SMC Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and its products are used on machines and instrument air lines across the world.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists SMC AW series filter regulators (AW20 and AW40) and the VX2 series direct-operated 2-port solenoid valve, and sources other SMC parts by full part number.

SMC series listed on this page

The AW is a combined filter and pressure regulator in SMC's modular air preparation line. The body size is in the name: AW20 is the smaller unit and AW40 the larger, and the digits after the dash give the port size. A part number such as AW40-04-A therefore describes body size, port and options in one string. The VX2 is a direct-operated two-port solenoid valve for shutting off air, water, oil or steam, depending on the body and seal materials chosen.

Ordering SMC parts: what we need

Give the complete SMC part number from the label, including thread prefix, options and the final suffix letter. For AW units state gauge, drain type and bracket if you need them. For VX2 valves send coil voltage, port size, orifice, body and seal material, and the fluid. Buyers in the GCC often have NPT or G threads on site, so say which thread standard the piping uses.
