Higher flow for larger cylinders in the SY family

SY7120-5LZD-02 is the SY7000 size of SMC 5-port, 2-position single solenoid valve in body-ported form. Its Rc 1/4 ports and a flow conductance of 4.1 dm3/(s.bar) are roughly twice the SY5000 value (1.9) and more than six times the SY3000 value (0.61), so it suits larger cylinders, as a rough guide bores of the order of 40 to 63 mm (our estimate, not a catalogue statement), and circuits that need quick filling.

The code decodes as SY7 (SY7000 size), 1 (2-position single), 20 (main valve style), 5 (24 VDC), L (L plug connector with lead wires), Z (light and surge voltage suppressor), D (push-turn locking slotted manual override) and 02 (Rc 1/4 for the A and B ports). No bracket, thread-type or manual override letters beyond those shown are included.

Where the SY7000 size fits

The three common SY sizes line up neatly by port: M5 for the SY3000, Rc 1/8 for the SY5000 and Rc 1/4 for the SY7000. The 7000 weighs about 104 g, roughly 1.4 times the 72 g of the SY5000 with the same connector, while its flow is about twice as high. The catalogue frequency limit of 5 Hz matches the SY5000, so the gain is flow, not cycle rate.

The tabulated b value of 0.23 and the Cv of 0.93 are the figures used in the manufacturer calculation of effective area; for sizing against a cylinder speed requirement use the sonic conductance and critical pressure ratio together, not C alone.

Installation guidance

Use the foot bracket (F1) or a side bracket (F2) for a rigid single-unit mount where the catalogue offers them; the catalogue says a bracket is not available for the SY9000 size and a body-ported single unit does not include manifold bolts and gasket. Exhaust silencers and speed controllers are the normal accessories. Supply filtered and dry air to keep the pilot valve clean.

When replacing an older valve, confirm voltage, connector type, port thread (Rc, G, NPT or NPTF) and the manual override style, since each is a separate letter in the code.

How the SY7120-5LZD-02 Works

The SY7120-5LZD-02 is a pilot-operated 5-port spool valve with a spring return. A small solenoid pilot valve, powered at 24 VDC, uses supply air from port 1 (P) to push the main spool across. With the coil energised, port 1 connects to port 4 (A) and port 2 (B) exhausts to port 3. With the coil off, the return spring resets the spool, so port 1 feeds port 2 and port 4 exhausts to port 5. Because the pilot is internal, the valve needs at least 0.15 MPa at port 1 to switch. For vacuum or very low-pressure service, the catalogue offers external pilot versions instead.

The larger SY7000 body gives the high flow quoted above while keeping the same coil, connector and power figures as the smaller SY sizes. The SY7120-5LZD-02 therefore draws the same 0.35 W (0.4 W with indicator light) as an SY3000 valve, which simplifies PLC output and power supply sizing.

If the existing installation uses G or NPT fittings, a different thread letter is needed, and a 12 VDC control system needs voltage code 6. A spring-return single valve is the natural choice when the cylinder must go to a known position whenever the signal or power is removed. Where the cylinder must stop and hold mid-stroke, consider a 3-position version instead.

Installation & Maintenance

• Blow out supply lines before connecting the valve, and keep sealing tape and thread compound away from the first threads.
• Size the supply tubing and fittings so that they do not restrict the valve; the SY7000 is chosen for flow, and an undersized supply loses that advantage.
• Fit silencers to the exhaust ports and use speed controllers to set cylinder speed.
• Isolate air and power before removing the valve or its connector.
• Supply filtered, dry air. Lubrication is not required, but once it is used it must be continued.
