A straight push-in connector from tube to male thread

KQ2H06-01S is a male connector from the SMC KQ2 one-touch fitting series. A 6 mm tube pushes into one end and the other end has an R1/8 male taper thread that screws into a port. It is one of the commonest fittings in a pneumatic panel because it replaces a barbed or compression fitting with a push-in joint that needs no tool for the tube.

Read the code as KQ2 (series, white body), H (male connector), 06 (the tube outside diameter in mm), 01 (the 1/8 thread size) and S (the thread is supplied with sealant already applied). The M5 and M6 versions of the same family carry the letters M5 and M6 instead of 01S.

How the push-in joint works

The stainless chuck grips the tube as it is pulled, and the release button frees it when pressed, so a tube can be fitted and removed many times without being damaged. The special profile of the packing seals from a low vacuum up to the maximum pressure, which makes the fitting usable on suction lines as well as on air lines.

The body of the fitting can turn on its stud, which the catalogue describes as useful in confined spaces: the tube can be aimed after the thread has been tightened.

Selection and fitting tips

Match the tube material and the thread to the port. The 1/8 thread is the usual match for 6 mm tube on small cylinder and valve ports; a 1/4 thread is also sold for the same tube size (code 02). A tube that is thicker or thinner than 6 mm will not seal, and the catalogue also lists soft nylon and polyurethane, which are accepted at the same size but may reduce the pressure that can be used.

Because the thread comes with sealant, do not add tape unless the catalogue precautions say it is needed. The maximum pressure of the tube may be lower than that of the fitting, so check both.

The current SMC KQ2 catalogue lists the round-release-button male connector for 6 mm tube with an R1/8 thread and sealant under the dimension table below. The same body is also offered with the newer oval release button, which has the suffix 1 at the end of the code.

How It Works

Inside the KQ2H06-01S a stainless steel chuck bites lightly into the outside of the tube as soon as the tube is pushed in, and a guide/collet increases the holding force when the line is pressurised or pulled. A special-profile seal closes on the tube surface and seals over the whole range from low vacuum up to 1 MPa. Pressing the light-grey release button pushes the collet forward, frees the chuck and lets the tube be withdrawn without damage. The thread is pre-coated with sealant, so on most ports no PTFE tape is needed.

• KQ2 – one-touch fitting series, metric tube.
• H – male connector (straight). Elbow (L), universal elbow (V), branch tee (T) and other shapes use the same tube and thread codes.
• 06 – for Ø6 mm tube. 23 (Ø3.2), 04, 08, 10, 12 and 16 are also listed.
• 01 – R1/8 taper thread. 02 = R1/4, 03 = R3/8; M5 and M6 versions use a gasket seal instead of sealant.

Installation & Maintenance

• Tighten the R1/8 thread by hand, then use a 10 mm spanner on the hex. Do not over-tighten into aluminium or resin ports.
• Cut the tube square, insert it fully past the seal and check by pulling.
• Keep surge pressure below the maximum operating pressure. The catalogue states the fittings are not guaranteed for zero leakage, so do not use them on a leak tester or for vacuum retention.
• Deionised water is not recommended because it can affect the fitting materials.
• When a joint leaks, cut 10–20 mm off the tube end and re-insert before replacing the fitting.
