The larger Intuition platform for multi-sensor cooling, boiler and process water

The Intuition-9 is the larger sibling of Walchem’s Intuition range, designed for installations that need more inputs, more relays and room to grow. Four I/O slots let the buyer add sensor inputs, analog inputs and outputs and Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) corrosion sensors, and the controller provides three to twelve relay control outputs, sixteen virtual inputs and sixteen virtual outputs. A 7 inch full-colour touchscreen with icon-based programming handles set-up.

Remote access is by Ethernet or WiFi through the internet or a LAN, with optional BACnet or Modbus/TCP, and the controller can e-mail alarm messages, datalogs, graphs and system summary reports. Walchem lists cooling tower (CT9), boiler (BL9) and pH, disinfection and conductivity (IN9) base models.

Modular I/O and the model code

Where the Intuition-6 uses fixed boards, the Intuition-9 is configured from I/O modules. The order code runs through label, base model, relay board and pigtails, power cord, I/O modules 1 to 4, WiFi, protocol, auxiliary power, sensor mounting and sensors. Relay boards range from eight powered relays (0000) to combinations of powered, opto and dry relays, with USA-pigtail prewired variants. I/O modules include dual sensor inputs, dual, four or six analog inputs, dual or four analog outputs, and dual corrosion inputs.

Sensor options cover graphite and 316SS cooling-tower contacting conductivity, electrodeless conductivity, high-pressure conductivity and pH/ORP, makeup conductivity, chlorine and chlorine dioxide sensors, Little Dipper fluorometers, corrosion sensors and Pyxis polymer and PTSA options, with only one sensor of a given type allowed for each manifold mounting style.

Where it fits, and points to confirm

Choose the Intuition-9 when one controller must supervise several measurements, such as tower conductivity, pH, ORP, makeup water, corrosion rate and a fluorometer, or when many outputs are needed. For a single-purpose tower or boiler, the smaller Intuition-6 or the W100W may be sufficient.

Confirm the maximum sensor pressure and temperature (for example 0 to 300 psi for high-pressure conductivity and pH/ORP with a 0 to 70 °C or 0 to 135 °C rating as printed in the brochure), the relay count and type, the power cord, whether WiFi is needed, the protocol, and whether corrosion-sensor electrodes must be bought separately, because the brochure notes some are ordered individually. In severe radio-frequency environments Walchem advises relocating the controller away from the interference source.

How the Walchem Intuition-9 works

Sensors in the water send their signals to the controller. The controller compares each value with its set point. It then switches relay outputs to run pumps and valves, so chemical feed and bleed follow the process.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the Intuition-9

Mount the controller on a wall near the sensors and wire the inputs and relays. Set up the sensors on the touchscreen and test the outputs. Clean and calibrate the sensors at regular intervals.
