Hand-held hydraulic pull-off testing up to 50 MPa

The Elcometer 506 Pull-Off Adhesion Tester measures the strength of the bond between a coating and its substrate by pulling a bonded dolly away with a smoothly applied hydraulic load. It is hand held, ergonomic and fully portable, so it suits on-site testing of coatings on metal, wood, concrete and other substrates as well as laboratory work. A rotating crank handle applies an even, uniform load, and a quick-connect coupling accepts 14.2, 20 and 50 mm diameter reusable dollies. A safety harness clip prevents accidental damage to surrounding areas during tests on vertical surfaces, and the sealed, impact-resistant body is rated dust and waterproof equivalent to IP65.

Part numbers

The datasheet lists four digital kits: F506-20D (20 mm), F506-20DC (20 mm, certified), F506-50D (50 mm) and F506-50DC (50 mm, certified). The D kits are supplied with a test certificate and the DC kits with a calibration certificate. A 20 mm kit contains the adhesion tester with ten 20 mm dollies, a standard skirt, dolly cutter handle and cutter, Araldite two-part epoxy adhesive (2 x 15 ml), an abrasive pad, a carry case, batteries, a certificate and instructions. The 50 mm kit contains the tester with six 50 mm dollies, a standard skirt, a 50 mm cutter arbor and cutter, adhesive, an abrasive pad, a carry case, batteries, a certificate and instructions. Accessories include dolly packs, thin-substrate skirts for each dolly size, a magnetic anchor clamp for vertical surfaces and dolly cleaning heating tongs.

Choosing the dolly and skirt

Match the dolly to the expected bond strength so that the reading falls inside the operating range of that dolly: the 14.2 mm dolly for high-strength coatings, the 20 mm dolly for general work and the 50 mm dolly for weak coatings or concrete. Actuator skirts are available for different substrate thicknesses and for flat or curved surfaces, including a thin-substrate skirt. The Elcometer 506 is supplied with a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects, which can be extended free of charge to two years within 60 days of purchase through the manufacturer. Elcometer 456 coating thickness gauges

The Elcometer 456 measures dry film thickness. The separate version in our listing takes plug-in probes on a cable, so one gauge body can work with different probes. Probe choice follows the substrate: ferrous probes for coatings on steel, non-ferrous probes for coatings on metals such as aluminum, and dual probes for both. Probe scale and shape are chosen to suit the coating thickness and the access to the surface.
