YSI ProDSS Multiparameter Digital Water Quality Meter

Overview

YSI ProDSS is a rugged, user-friendly handheld instrument for multiparameter water quality sampling. The name stands for Digital Sampling System, and the instrument pairs an impact-resistant, waterproof display with a four-port cable assembly that accepts any four digital smart sensors at the same time. Optional depth and GPS capability allow the operator to record where and at what depth every reading was taken. YSI is a Xylem brand, and the ProDSS is one of the best-known field instruments for surface water, groundwater, wastewater, coastal and aquaculture work.

In Oman and across the GCC, water quality teams have to document dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, pH and turbidity at wells, wadis, reservoirs, treatment works, outfalls and coastal sites, often in heat and with limited time per site. Measurement Principle

The YSI ProDSS is a digital instrument. Every sensor on the cable contains its own electronics and calibration memory, so the sensor converts the signal and passes it to the handheld digitally, and the meter recognises each sensor automatically while retaining its calibration data. This is what the manufacturer calls smart sensor technology, and it allows sensors to be moved between cables and instruments without losing their calibration history.

Dissolved oxygen is measured by an optical sensor, which reads the luminescence of a dye layer that is quenched by oxygen. Conductivity and temperature are measured by a combined sensor, and the instrument calculates specific conductance, salinity, resistivity and total dissolved solids from them. pH and ORP use electrodes, turbidity uses an optical sensor, and total algae sensors measure chlorophyll together with phycocyanin or phycoerythrin by fluorescence. Ammonium, chloride and nitrate are measured with ion-selective electrodes. YSI notes that a conductivity and temperature sensor should be installed in every YSI ProDSS cable for accurate temperature compensation of the other parameters.

Engineering Design of the YSI ProDSS

The YSI ProDSS handheld measures 8.3 by 21.6 by 5.6 cm and weighs 567 grams with batteries. It has a colour LCD graphic display of 3.9 by 6.5 cm, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, an IP-67 waterproof housing that floats, and a built-in micro USB port for charging, PC connection and connection to a USB drive. The case passed a one-metre drop test, and the instrument carries RoHS, CE, WEEE and FCC marks, along with the UN test methods for lithium-ion batteries.

The field cable is user-replaceable and uses military-specification connectors. Four-port cables are offered without depth in 1, 4, 10, 20, 30, 60 and 90 metre lengths, and with depth in 4, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 and 100 metre lengths. One-port cables, an ODO/T cable with integral optical dissolved oxygen and temperature, an ODO/CT cable that adds conductivity, and the ProOBOD self-stirring optical BOD lab probe are available as additional options. Data is managed with Kor Software for Windows or the Kor Mobile app for iOS and Android, and the instrument stores more than 100,000 data sets with a site list and data ID tags.
