Brand: Hanna Instruments
Hanna HI98199 Portable pH, EC and Dissolved Oxygen Meter
Description
One rugged body for pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen
The HI98199 is a versatile waterproof meter that monitors pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen when paired with the matching digital probe. The body is compact, rugged and rated IP67. The connected probe is recognised automatically, which removes manual set-up when the operator swaps from a pH probe to a conductivity or oxygen probe during a site visit.
Hanna lists a backlit display with clear messages and warnings, a dedicated HELP key, and logging space for up to 45,000 samples, which makes the meter suitable for routine rounds across a plant or a catchment where results need to be downloaded afterwards.

Probe-based flexibility
Where the dedicated HI98190, HI98192 and HI98193 each carry one sensor type, the HI98199 uses digital probes that identify themselves to the meter. Hanna names the HI829113 digital pH probe, the HI763093 digital conductivity probe and the HI764103 digital galvanic dissolved oxygen probe as the matching probes. Using a galvanic DO probe removes the warm-up time that polarographic probes need, which is helpful for quick spot checks.
From the conductivity probe the meter derives TDS, resistivity and salinity, and each parameter keeps its own calibration. The pH range is calibrated automatically against up to five standard buffers, conductivity against six standards, and dissolved oxygen at 0 and 100 %.
Selection notes and kit contents
This model suits teams that need to carry a single logger for pH, EC and DO on boilers, cooling circuits, effluent works, aquaculture ponds and water supply surveys. For turbidity and ion-selective measurements in the same meter, look at the multi-parameter HI9829; for the highest-resolution pH work, the HI98190 offers 0.001 pH.
Confirm which probes are required, because Hanna supplies the HI829113 pH probe with the base meter while the conductivity and dissolved oxygen probes are separate codes. Per Hanna, the HI98199 comes in a rugged carrying case with the HI829113 digital pH probe on a 4 m cable, HI700601 cleaning solution, HI7004 and HI7007 buffer solutions, an HI920015 micro USB cable, two 100 mL beakers, four AA batteries, instruction manual and quality certificates.
Key features at a glance
- Three core water-quality parameters (pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen) from one handheld body, depending on the probe connected.
- Automatic probe recognition, so the operator does not reconfigure the meter when changing sensors in the field.
- IP67 waterproof housing, intended for work beside tanks, channels, wells and sampling points where splashes and drops are routine.
- Backlit display with on-screen messages and a dedicated HELP key that guides the user through calibration and measurement steps.
- Internal logging of up to 45,000 samples for later download, useful when a round covers many points in one shift.
- Derived readings for TDS, resistivity and salinity from the conductivity sensor, as listed in the specification table above.
Practical calibration routine
Accuracy figures on a datasheet only hold when the sensors are calibrated against fresh standards. For pH, a two- or three-point calibration that brackets the expected sample range gives more reliable results than a single point; for example, wastewater close to neutral is normally covered by buffers around 7 and 4 or 10. Buffers should be poured into clean beakers and discarded after use rather than returned to the bottle.
Conductivity calibration on the HI98199 is a single-point routine, so the chosen standard should sit near the conductivity of the water actually measured: a low standard for permeate or boiler feed, a high standard for brackish groundwater or seawater intakes. Dissolved oxygen is calibrated in one or two points, and the membrane and electrolyte condition of the DO sensor has a direct effect on response time and stability.
Good habits in the field
- Rinse the probe with deionised water, or with a little of the next sample, between measuring points to avoid carry-over.
- Allow readings to stabilise before logging; DO and conductivity respond to temperature changes, so let the sensor reach sample temperature.
- Keep the pH electrode moist with the recommended storage solution and never store it in distilled water.
- Record calibration date and buffer lot numbers alongside logged data for traceability during audits.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
A multiparameter portable meter is a common tool for anyone who has to check water at several points without carrying separate instruments. Typical users include:
- Sewage treatment plants checking aeration basins, where dissolved oxygen indicates whether blowers are delivering enough air, and final effluent before discharge or reuse for irrigation.
- Desalination and reverse osmosis plants following conductivity and pH across intake, pretreatment and permeate streams.
- Aquaculture farms, where oxygen levels in tanks and ponds fall quickly as water temperature rises.
- Groundwater and falaj monitoring programmes measuring salinity trends in wells.
- Environmental consultants and laboratories performing site surveys for permits and compliance reports.
High summer temperatures affect both the samples and the instrument. Dissolved oxygen solubility drops as water warms, so readings taken at midday and at dawn can differ substantially in the same basin; conductivity also changes with temperature, which is why temperature compensation and recording the sample temperature matter. Storing the meter and probes out of direct sun in a vehicle helps protect electrodes and batteries.
What to include in your RFQ
- The meter model HI98199 and which probes are needed (pH, conductivity, DO, or a combination), plus required cable lengths.
- Calibration solutions and DO maintenance items (membranes and electrolyte) for the first months of use.
- Whether a carrying case, PC download accessories or spare batteries are required.
- Quantity, delivery location in Oman or elsewhere in the GCC, and any documentation needed, such as certificates of conformity or calibration reports.
Sharing the type of water being measured (effluent, seawater, permeate or process water) lets us check that the selected probes and standards suit the expected range before a quotation is issued.
