Hanna HI97711 Free and Total Chlorine Portable Photometer

Description

A waterproof photometer for free and total chlorine in the field

The HI97711 is an auto-diagnostic portable photometer that measures free and total chlorine in water samples from 0.00 to 5.00 mg/L (ppm). The method is an adaptation of the US EPA Method 330.5 DPD colorimetric method. Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant for drinking water, wastewater and swimming pools, so a compact meter that can be taken to the sampling point is useful for network checks, tank inspections and routine plant rounds.

The optical system uses a light-emitting diode and a narrow-band interference filter at 525 nm with a silicon photocell detector, and the optical chamber is sealed against dust, dirt and water. A positive-locking cuvette holder places the cuvette in the same position on every reading, which supports repeatable results.

CAL Check validation and guided operation

The CAL Check function lets the user validate the performance of the instrument at any time and apply a user calibration if necessary. Hanna makes its CAL Check cuvettes with NIST-traceable standards, which gives a documented way to show an auditor or a quality manager that the meter is still reading correctly. A built-in tutorial mode guides the operator step by step through sample preparation, the reagents required and the quantities.

The meter holds both powder-reagent and liquid-reagent methods for free and total chlorine. Powder reagents come as single packets (for example HI93701-0 free chlorine) or in packs of 100 and 300 tests, and the liquid method uses reagent drops (HI93701A-F and HI93701B-F for free chlorine, with a third reagent for total chlorine). A GLP function and 50 logged readings help with record keeping.

Who should choose it, and what ships with it

This photometer is suited to chlorination checks on potable water, residual monitoring after tank cleaning, wastewater disinfection checks and general water-treatment rounds. When turbidity must also be measured, Hanna lists the HI83414 benchtop meter, which combines turbidity with free and total chlorine.

Before ordering, decide between the HI97711 kit and the HI97711C kit, plan reagent consumption for the number of tests expected, and consider spare cuvettes. Per Hanna’s manual, the HI97711 ships in a cardboard box with two sample cuvettes, two cuvette caps, two plastic stoppers, AA batteries, a quality certificate and the manual. The HI97711C adds a rugged carrying case, a zero CAL Check cuvette A, an HI97701B CAL Check cuvette B for free and total chlorine, a wiping cloth, scissors and a CAL Check standard certificate.

About brand

Hanna Instruments is a maker of analytical instruments for water and liquid testing, founded in 1978 in the Padua area of Italy by Oscar and Anna Nardo. Its early breakthrough was the pHep, an affordable pocket-sized pH tester. The company is now led by the founders' children, Martino and Pamela Nardo, with its headquarters in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and offers more than 3,000 products.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Hanna instruments for water, wastewater and laboratory users in Oman and the GCC.
