Bently Nevada 3500/64M Dynamic Pressure Monitor
Overview
The Bently Nevada 3500/64M Dynamic Pressure Monitor is a single-slot, four-channel module for the Bently Nevada 3500 machinery protection rack that accepts signals from high-temperature pressure transducers and uses them to drive alarms. Its one measured variable per channel is bandpass dynamic pressure: rather than the static pressure a process transmitter reports, the Bently Nevada 3500/64M looks at the pressure pulsations riding on top of it, filtered to the frequency band that matters for the machine. Typical uses are combustion pressure pulsations in gas turbine combustors and other high-frequency pressure dynamics that can damage hardware if left unchecked.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Bently Nevada 3500/64M, its I/O modules, external termination blocks and cables to operators in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The current manufacturer datasheet (141536 Rev. T) is attached to this page so that engineers can check filter options and part numbers before requesting a quotation.
Measurement Principle
The Bently Nevada 3500/64M accepts one to four pressure transducer signals with a dynamic pressure sensitivity of 100 mV/psi (1.45 mV/mbar). Three-wire transducers are powered with −24 Vdc and see a 10 kΩ input, while two-wire transducers are fed from a 3.3 mA current source at a nominal 22 Vdc and see a typical 1.5 to 3.5 MΩ input. Bandpass corner frequencies are configured in the 3500 Rack Configuration Software. In Low mode the direct filter covers 5 Hz to 4 kHz, extending to approximately 5.285 kHz if no low-pass filter is chosen, using 10-pole high-pass and low-pass filters with 60 dB per octave roll-off. In High mode the range is 10 Hz to 14.75 kHz with 6-pole filters at 36 dB per octave and a fixed low pass.
Channels 1 and 2 form one pair and channels 3 and 4 the other; each pair runs in the same filtering mode, but each channel can use a different bandpass. A line rejection notch filter, selectable for 50 or 60 Hz, removes mains pickup. In Cascade Mode, shown as 1 >ALL in the software, the monitor feeds the channel 1 input to all four channels, so one transducer can be analysed with four separate bandpass filters and four separate full-scale ranges. That is useful when a single combustor sensor must be watched for low-frequency and high-frequency tones at the same time.
Engineering Design of the Bently Nevada 3500/64M
The front of the Bently Nevada 3500/64M carries OK, TX/RX and Bypass LEDs and one short-circuit-protected coaxial buffered transducer output per channel, with 550 Ω output impedance, for connecting portable analysers without disturbing protection. Cascade Mode does not cascade these buffered outputs. Each channel also drives an individual +4 to +20 mA recorder output proportional to full scale, with 0 to +12 Vdc compliance into 0 to 600 Ω, a resolution of 0.3662 µA per bit and an update rate of approximately 100 ms or less. A short circuit on a recorder output does not affect monitor operation.
The main board measures 241.3 × 24.4 × 241.8 mm and weighs 0.82 kg. Two rear I/O modules are listed for the Bently Nevada 3500/64M: internal termination, where field wiring lands directly on the I/O module, and external termination, where the I/O module connects by cable to separate dynamic pressure and recorder output termination blocks mounted elsewhere in the cabinet. The datasheet notes that the internal and external termination I/O modules carry the same jumpers.
Key Features
The main capabilities of the Bently Nevada 3500/64M according to the manufacturer datasheet are:
- Four channels of bandpass dynamic pressure in a single 3500 rack slot.
- Low filtering mode from 5 Hz to 4 kHz with 10-pole filters, and High mode from 10 Hz to 14.75 kHz.
- Selectable 50 Hz or 60 Hz line rejection notch filter.
- Cascade Mode that applies one transducer input to all four channels with independent filters and ranges.
- Support for both 3-wire (−24 Vdc) and 2-wire (3.3 mA current source) pressure transducers.
- Short-circuit-protected buffered transducer outputs on the front panel.
- Individual +4 to +20 mA recorder outputs for each channel for control system use.
- Danger alarm delay down to 0.1 second for fast-developing pressure events.
Industrial Applications
Dry low-emission gas turbines run close to their combustion stability limits, and pressure pulsations inside the combustor can crack liners, transition pieces and fuel nozzles within hours if a tuning drifts. Installing the Bently Nevada 3500/64M in the turbine protection rack gives an alarm, and if required a trip input, when pulsation amplitude in a chosen frequency band rises above its setpoint. Power stations and independent water and power producers in Oman that run heavy-duty or aeroderivative gas turbines are natural users, and the module sits well alongside the Bently Nevada 3500/42M Proximitor Seismic Monitor that watches casing and shaft vibration on the same unit.
Fast speed and phase references in the same rack come from modules such as the 3500/25 Keyphasor Module, and transient waveform data can be sent to diagnostic software through the 3500/22M Transient Data Interface. For plants in Sohar, Salalah and Duqm, Seven Star LLC can help choose between internal and external termination, plan recorder wiring to the control system, and keep a spare Bently Nevada 3500/64M on hand in Oman and the GCC for outage work.
