Moog D634 Direct Drive Servo Valve

Description

Overview

Moog D634 is a direct drive servo valve with integrated electronics and an analog command interface, built to the ISO 4401 size 05 (NG10) mounting pattern. A permanent magnet linear force motor moves the spool directly, so the valve needs no pilot oil and its dynamic behaviour does not depend on supply or pilot pressure. Within the Moog D633 and D634 range, the D634 is the larger frame: it is rated for 60 or 100 l/min per spool land at a 35 bar drop, passes up to 180 l/min at maximum flow, and accepts operating pressures up to 350 bar on ports P, A and B.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Moog D634 to machine builders, power plant maintenance teams and test-rig operators in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. With engineering support in Muscat, our engineers help buyers check the rated flow, spool design, signal type, fail-safe position and seal material against the Moog ordering code before an RFQ is raised, so the valve that arrives matches the controller and the hydraulic circuit it will serve.

Operating Principle

The Moog D634 is a throttle valve for 3-way, 4-way and 2×2-way duty. Its spool is driven by a permanent magnet linear force motor, a differential design that pushes the spool away from the spring-centred middle position in both directions. A proportional solenoid can only pull in one direction, whereas the linear force motor actively drives the spool back toward centre as well, supported by the centring springs. Part of the force comes from the magnets themselves, which is why the actuating force at a given size is higher and the power draw around hydraulic null is low.

The Moog D634 runs in spool position control. The analog command signal is proportional to the wanted spool position, a position transducer (LVDT) reports the actual position, and the on-board electronics compare the two and adjust the pulse-width-modulated coil current until the error is closed. An analog actual-value output mirrors the spool position for the machine controller. Because the loop closes on spool position rather than on pressure, the response stays pressure independent, and the spool returns to its spring-centred position if the supply fails, a cable breaks or an emergency stop is triggered.

Engineering Design of the Moog D634

The Moog D634 is a single-stage design in which the spool slides in a fully hardened steel bushing, giving low internal leakage, fine positioning and high wear resistance. The body mounts on an ISO 4401-05-05-0-05 surface with an additional T1 tank port, which must be connected for 4-way duty above 60 l/min. A leakage-oil Y connection is optional: ordered closed with a screw plug it limits tank pressure to 50 bar, while the open version with filter insert allows higher tank pressure. For maximum flow the P, T, T1, A and B bores in the sub-plate should be drilled to 11.5 mm, and the mounting face needs 0.01 mm flatness over 100 mm.

Electrical connection is a 6-pole plus PE connector to EN 175201-804, protected to IP65 with mating connectors fitted. The Moog D634 takes 24 VDC (18 to 32 VDC) and accepts ±10 V, ±10 mA or 4 to 20 mA command signals with a 4 to 20 mA or 2 to 10 V actual-value output, selected by the ordering code. It weighs 7.9 kg, tolerates 30 g vibration on three axes and 50 g shock, and carries an MTTFd of 150 years to EN ISO 13849-1. A flameproof K version is offered for gas atmospheres, and NBR or FKM seals cover mineral oil and a range of fire-resistant fluids.

Key Features

The Moog D634 combines the following characteristics, which together suit high-response closed-loop hydraulic axes at moderate-to-high flow:

  • Direct drive by a linear force motor in the Moog D634 removes the need for pilot flow, so dynamics stay independent of pilot pressure.
  • A step response of 20 ms or better for a 0 to 100 percent stroke supports fast position, speed, pressure and force loops.
  • Typical threshold of 0.05 percent and typical hysteresis of 0.1 percent give the precision that demanding closed-loop control tasks expect.
  • Low current consumption at and near the spool centre position keeps energy use down during standby and slow-motion phases.
  • Fail-safe options let the spool return to a defined position (centre, or P to B and A to T approximately 10 percent open) when power is lost.
  • Four spool styles are available: axis cut, 1.5 to 3 percent overlap, 10 percent overlap, and a 2×2-way version with Y port.
  • The null shift stays below 1.5 percent across a 55 K temperature change, which protects accuracy in warm plant rooms.
  • Many ordering-code variants let the Moog D634 family cover several machines and controller types.

Industrial Applications

Moog groups the D633 and D634 range under metal forming and presses, power generation, test and simulation markets, and these are the places the Moog D634 earns its keep. Press and forming lines use the valve for precise ram positioning and force control, test laboratories use it to drive fatigue and structural rigs, and power plant engineers use servo valves of this class in hydraulic control loops where a fast, repeatable response is needed. In Oman, that covers fabrication yards, desalination and power facilities, and the industrial estates at Sohar and Salalah where hydraulic power units run continuously.

When a project needs more than the 180 l/min ceiling of the Moog D634, Seven Star LLC also supplies the Moog D791 pilot-operated servo valve for 100 to 250 l/min, the Moog 79 Series flow control servo valve for 115 to 225 l/min and the Moog D792 high-flow servo valve for the largest circuits. Our engineers in Muscat can compare these options against the cylinder, pump and cycle time of the machine.

Related Moog valves: Moog D638 digital p/Q control servo valve and Moog D661 pilot-operated servo valve are also supplied by Seven Star LLC.

About brand

The electrohydraulic servo valve is the product that made Moog, founded in 1951 in East Aurora, New York. Its industrial valves and motors position turbine governors, presses and test rigs where fast, accurate motion matters. Seven Star LLC lists Moog servo valves, proportional valves and an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, and sources them by model and type number for plants in Oman.

Moog servo valves and motors listed

The Moog products on this page are:

  • G761 series: two-stage flow control servo valve with mechanical feedback
  • 79 series, including D791 and D792: pilot-operated servo valves for high flow rates
  • Servo valves and servo-proportional valves for hydraulic control in general
  • G-3LM6-048-00-00-01: an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, listed here under the G400K series

Within one series, valves differ in rated flow, spool lap, coil rating, seal material and pilot arrangement. Two G761 valves with different type numbers are therefore not interchangeable without checking.

Where Moog servo valves are used

Moog servo valves control steam and gas turbine fuel and steam actuators, compressor anti-surge and guide vane actuators, steel mill gauge control, injection molding and presses, and materials test machines. In GCC power stations and gas plants the usual request is a like-for-like valve for a turbine control actuator specified by the turbine builder.

Ordering Moog parts: what we need

The nameplate on a Moog servo valve shows the model, a type designation and a serial number. Please send all three, or a clear photo. The type designation fixes rated flow, maximum operating pressure, signal and coil data, seals and connector, and is the only safe basis for quoting. If the valve was supplied through a machine builder, also give the builder's own part number. State the hydraulic fluid, especially if it is a fire-resistant phosphate ester, since that decides the seal material. For Moog servo motors, send the full model string, as in the G400K example above, and the drive it runs with.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Moog D634 differ from a pilot-operated servo valve?
The Moog D634 is a direct drive valve: a permanent magnet linear force motor moves the spool directly, so no pilot oil is needed and the dynamics do not depend on pilot pressure. This simplifies the hydraulic supply and keeps the response consistent across the operating pressure range.
What flow and pressure can the Moog D634 handle?
The Moog D634 is available with rated flows of 60 or 100 l/min per spool land at a 35 bar drop, and it passes up to 180 l/min maximum flow. Ports P, A and B are rated to 350 bar, while the tank port is limited to 50 bar without the Y connection and 210 bar with it.
What command signals and supply does the Moog D634 use?
The valve runs on 24 VDC (18 to 32 VDC) and accepts a plus or minus 10 V, plus or minus 10 mA or 4 to 20 mA command signal, depending on the ordering code. The actual-value output is 4 to 20 mA or 2 to 10 V, and the connector is a 6-pole plus PE type to EN 175201-804.
What happens to the Moog D634 if the electrical supply fails?
The spool returns to its spring-centred position without passing through a fully open control port, so the actuator stops. Fail-safe options with a defined 10 percent open position are also listed in the ordering code, and the choice should be matched to the machine safety concept.
