Brand:

Moog G760 Series Servo Valve, Two-Stage Analog

Description

G760 series: Moog two-stage servo valves for analog control

The Moog G760 series is a family of two-stage, two-stage flow control servo valves with mechanical feedback, driven by an analog current signal. A nozzle-flapper pilot stage moves the spool, and the spool position is fed back mechanically, which gives the high resolution, low hysteresis and fast response that closed-loop hydraulic axes need.

Moog classes the 760 series as a legacy, end-of-life product line and recommends the G761 / 761 series for new designs. The valves remain widely installed, so they are a frequent spare-parts and repair request in plants that still run older hydraulic control systems. Seven Star LLC supplies G760 series valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; the exact configuration must be confirmed from the nameplate.

How the G760 servo valve works

A torque motor receives the command current and deflects a flapper between two nozzles. The pressure difference built up behind the nozzles moves the spool; a feedback wire or spring from the spool to the flapper assembly closes the loop mechanically, so the spool position is proportional to the input current. The result is a flow through the valve that follows the command with a very small delay.

The design offers high spool driving forces and a rugged construction for long service life, but it still needs well-filtered oil. The compact footprint suits tight installation spaces.

System fit, replacement and related Moog valves

G760 valves are mounted on an ISO 10372 size 04 manifold and driven by a servo amplifier or motion controller that supplies a current command in the range of the rated signal, typically with dither. Typical partners are cylinders with position transducers, hydraulic motors and speed or pressure loops.

For replacement, the G761 / 761 series is the manufacturer’s recommended successor with the same size 04 pattern, but flow range, null bias and electrical options must be matched to your application. Never swap a servo valve without checking the amplifier setting, the rated current and the polarity.

Handling spares and repairs for G760 servo valves

Because the series is legacy, plants often face a choice between buying a spare, sending the valve for overhaul or migrating to the current G761. Before deciding, collect the nameplate data, the date of manufacture, the operating hours and the failure symptom, such as high null drift, slow response, external leakage or no movement.

Store servo valves in their original sealed packing, with the port plugs fitted, in a clean dry place. When a valve is replaced, record the null bias setting and the amplifier gain of the old unit so the new one can be set to the same operating point. Servo valves should be installed only by technicians familiar with clean hydraulic assembly, since a single particle can score the spool and sleeve.

Selection and ordering checklist

  • Complete nameplate data or model number with all suffix letters.
  • Rated flow at 70 bar valve drop and the system pressure.
  • Rated input current and coil configuration.
  • Seal material and fluid type.
  • Hazardous-area options if needed (intrinsically safe or explosion proof).
  • Mounting pattern and manifold condition.
  • Whether to replace like for like or move to the G761 successor.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance

Flush the system and use filters to the cleanliness level stated by the manufacturer before fitting a servo valve; contamination is the leading cause of failure. Check manifold surfaces and O-rings, torque the screws in sequence and observe the electrical polarity.

When commissioning, adjust the null (zero) bias, verify the symmetry of the response and tune the loop gain. Keep the oil temperature in the range of the fluid, avoid pressure spikes above the rated 210 bar and keep spare valves in sealed packaging.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Servo valves of this class control test rigs, turbine and compressor actuators, steel and aluminium processing equipment, injection moulding machines, motion platforms and general closed-loop hydraulics. In hot workshops and plants, the oil cooling system and filtration matter more than the valve itself, and an explosion-proof or intrinsically safe option applies in classified areas.

Fluid cleanliness and commissioning practice

Servo valves with a nozzle-flapper pilot stage are sensitive to contamination, and dirty oil is the most common cause of drift, sticking and failure. Keep the hydraulic fluid at the cleanliness level stated in the Moog catalog, use a fine pressure filter upstream of the valve, and change filter elements on condition rather than only by calendar.

When a system is new or has been opened for repair, flush it with a flushing plate fitted in place of the valve, then install the valve only after the oil samples are clean. Keep the protective shipping plate on the valve until the moment of installation, and store spare valves sealed and filled as supplied.

About brand

Moog is an American maker of precision motion control products, founded in July 1951 in East Aurora, New York, by Bill Moog, his brother Art Moog and Lou Geyer. Its first product was Bill Moog's electrohydraulic servo valve, which turns small electrical signals into fast, accurate hydraulic movement. Moog is still headquartered in East Aurora and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Seven Star LLC lists Moog servo valves, proportional valves and an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, and sources them by model and type number for plants in Oman.

Milestones

  • 1951: The Moog Valve Company starts in a corner of an airport hangar in East Aurora.
  • 1953: The US patent for Bill Moog's electrohydraulic servo valve is issued.
  • 1959: The company goes public as Moog Servocontrols Inc.

Moog servo valves and motors listed

The Moog products on this page are:

  • G761 series: two-stage flow control servo valve with mechanical feedback
  • 79 series, including D791 and D792: pilot-operated servo valves for high flow rates
  • Servo valves and servo-proportional valves for hydraulic control in general
  • G-3LM6-048-00-00-01: an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, listed here under the G400K series

Within one series, valves differ in rated flow, spool lap, coil rating, seal material and pilot arrangement. Two G761 valves with different type numbers are therefore not interchangeable without checking.

Where Moog servo valves are used

Moog servo valves control steam and gas turbine fuel and steam actuators, compressor anti-surge and guide vane actuators, steel mill gauge control, injection molding and presses, and materials test machines. In GCC power stations and gas plants the usual request is a like-for-like valve for a turbine control actuator specified by the turbine builder.

Ordering Moog parts: what we need

The nameplate on a Moog servo valve shows the model, a type designation and a serial number. Please send all three, or a clear photo. The type designation fixes rated flow, maximum operating pressure, signal and coil data, seals and connector, and is the only safe basis for quoting. If the valve was supplied through a machine builder, also give the builder's own part number. State the hydraulic fluid, especially if it is a fire-resistant phosphate ester, since that decides the seal material. For Moog servo motors, send the full model string, as in the G400K example above, and the drive it runs with.
