Moog D638 Digital p/Q Control Servo Valve
Description
Overview
Moog D638 is a size 03 (ISO 4401, NG6) direct drive servo valve that adds an integrated pressure sensor and digital electronics to the proven linear force motor design. Where a conventional flow servo valve only positions a spool, the Moog D638 can regulate pressure in port A, or control flow while holding a pressure limit, so a single valve can replace the separate flow valve, pressure valve and external transducer that many hydraulic axes still carry. It is rated for 5, 10, 20 or 40 l/min per spool land at a 35 bar drop, passes up to 75 l/min at maximum flow, and works at pressures up to 350 bar.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Moog D638 to injection moulding, press, test-bench and power generation customers in Oman and the wider GCC. Because the valve is configured through a long ordering code that covers pressure range, valve function, fieldbus and connector, our team in Muscat reviews each request with the buyer so the valve ordered matches the control architecture, and engineering support before ordering helps keep commissioning on schedule.
Operating Principle
Inside the Moog D638, a permanent magnet linear force motor drives the spool in both directions from a spring-centred middle position, and an LVDT feeds the actual spool position to the digital electronics. In pressure control the electronics compare the reading of the transducer in port A with the pressure command and drive the spool until the deviation disappears. The valve can work in a main line, where it behaves like a 3-way pressure reducing or limiting valve, or in a bypass line, where a 2×2-way arrangement acts as an electrically adjustable relief valve from A to T.
In pQ mode the Moog D638 receives both a flow command and a pressure command are present. The spool position requested by the pressure controller is compared with the external spool command and the smaller of the two is used, so the valve follows the flow command until the actual pressure reaches the limit, at which point pressure control takes over smoothly. Maximum and minimum pressure limiting are both possible, and the choice between p and pQ control can be made over the fieldbus. Up to 16 pressure parameter sets can be stored and switched while the machine runs.
Engineering Design of the Moog D638
The Moog D638 is a single-stage valve with spool and bushing, weighing 2.5 kg, and it mounts in any orientation as long as the venting screw sits on top while the valve is vented. The electronics housing carries two fieldbus connectors, X3 and X4, so that the valve can be daisy-chained on the bus without external T-pieces, plus an M8 service connector (X10) for parameterisation, status LEDs, and a main connector X1 that is either 6-pole plus PE or 11-pole plus PE according to the chosen function. CANopen, PROFIBUS-DP and EtherCAT interfaces are offered, and an analog-only version is available.
Supply is 24 VDC (18 to 32 VDC) with a maximum current of 1.7 A, and protection is IP65 with mating plugs. The Moog D638 is set up with Moog Valve and Pump Configuration Software, which can store parameter sets and reuse them for later deliveries. Axis control can be added so that external sensors, read through up to three analog inputs, SSI or a bridge input, close the outer loop inside the valve itself. A version for hazardous areas, marked II 2G Ex de IIC, is available on request, and seals are supplied in HNBR or FKM.
Key Features
The following points set the Moog D638 apart from a plain analog servo valve of the same size:
- An integrated pressure sensor in the A channel of the Moog D638 removes the external transducer and the extra cabling it needs.
- One valve provides flow control, pressure control, and flow control with pressure limiting, selectable over the bus.
- The 8 ms step response for a 0 to 100 percent stroke supports fast pressure build-up and release.
- Typical threshold and hysteresis for flow control are both below 0.05 percent, with rated-flow deviation under 3 percent between samples.
- Five pressure ranges of the Moog D638 can be specified at order: 25, 100, 160, 250 and 350 bar.
- Diagnostic and condition-monitoring data are available in the valve, helping maintenance teams plan servicing.
- A one-to-one replacement path lets new valves reproduce the settings of earlier units.
- Fail-safe spool positions on power loss can be chosen at order: centre, or approximately 10 percent open toward either side.
Industrial Applications
Moog lists metal forming and presses, power generation, test and simulation as the target markets, and the catalog names oil rigs, offshore wind turbines and steel mills among the demanding environments in which the series has proven itself. Typical duties for the Moog D638 include clamp-force and back-pressure control on moulding and forming machines, regulated loading of test specimens, and pressure-controlled hydraulic clutches or brakes. In Oman, comparable duties arise in fabrication and plastics plants, in turbine and auxiliary hydraulic systems, and in the heavy-engineering yards of Sohar and Salalah.
For conventional two-stage servo loops in the same flow range, the Moog G761 electrohydraulic servo valve (0.5 to 75 l/min) is the established alternative to the Moog D638, while higher flows move to the Moog D791 pilot-operated servo valve (100 to 250 l/min) or the Moog 79 Series flow control servo valve (115 to 225 l/min). Seven Star LLC supplies the whole group from Muscat and can walk a project team through the comparison.
For plain analog flow control in the larger size 05, see the Moog D634 direct drive servo valve.

About brand
The electrohydraulic servo valve is the product that made Moog, founded in 1951 in East Aurora, New York. Its industrial valves and motors position turbine governors, presses and test rigs where fast, accurate motion matters. Seven Star LLC lists Moog servo valves, proportional valves and an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, and sources them by model and type number for plants in Oman.
Moog servo valves and motors listed
The Moog products on this page are:
- G761 series: two-stage flow control servo valve with mechanical feedback
- 79 series, including D791 and D792: pilot-operated servo valves for high flow rates
- Servo valves and servo-proportional valves for hydraulic control in general
- G-3LM6-048-00-00-01: an explosion-proof brushless servo motor, listed here under the G400K series
Within one series, valves differ in rated flow, spool lap, coil rating, seal material and pilot arrangement. Two G761 valves with different type numbers are therefore not interchangeable without checking.
Where Moog servo valves are used
Moog servo valves control steam and gas turbine fuel and steam actuators, compressor anti-surge and guide vane actuators, steel mill gauge control, injection molding and presses, and materials test machines. In GCC power stations and gas plants the usual request is a like-for-like valve for a turbine control actuator specified by the turbine builder.
Ordering Moog parts: what we need
The nameplate on a Moog servo valve shows the model, a type designation and a serial number. Please send all three, or a clear photo. The type designation fixes rated flow, maximum operating pressure, signal and coil data, seals and connector, and is the only safe basis for quoting. If the valve was supplied through a machine builder, also give the builder's own part number. State the hydraulic fluid, especially if it is a fire-resistant phosphate ester, since that decides the seal material. For Moog servo motors, send the full model string, as in the G400K example above, and the drive it runs with.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Moog D638 can control pressure in port A (p control) or control flow while limiting pressure (pQ control). Using the integrated pressure sensor and digital controller, one valve replaces the separate flow valve, pressure valve and external transducer that an axis would otherwise need.
Valves are offered with CANopen, PROFIBUS-DP or EtherCAT interfaces, or with analog signals only. Fieldbus versions have two connectors for daisy-chaining, and parameters are set with the Moog Valve and Pump Configuration Software via an M8 service connector.
Rated flow is 5, 10, 20 or 40 l/min per spool land at 35 bar drop, with a maximum flow of 75 l/min. Maximum operating pressure is 350 bar, and the order code lets the buyer select pressure ranges of 25, 100, 160, 250 or 350 bar.
Both belong to the same series with an integrated pressure sensor, but the D638 is size 03 for up to 75 l/min, while the D639 is the larger size 05 for up to 180 l/min maximum flow. The D638 has the faster 8 ms step response, and the D639 steps in 13 to 16 ms.
Seven Star LLC supplies Moog servo valves in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Please send the desired pressure range, valve function, fieldbus and connector, and we will return a formal RFQ with the Moog catalog for ordering-code checks.
