ifm NG5021 Inductive NAMUR Proximity Sensor
Overview
The ifm NG5021 is a genuine ifm electronic inductive NAMUR proximity sensor built into an M18 threaded barrel housing with an 8 mm non-flush sensing range and a NAMUR normally-closed (N.C.) 2-wire output per DIN 19234 / EN 60947-5-6. Unlike a standard PNP/NPN switching sensor, the NG5021 is designed specifically for connection to an intrinsically safe (Ex ia) barrier or isolator, making it the correct choice for detection, positioning, and counting tasks inside classified hazardous areas rather than general-purpose industrial zones. The sensor is supplied with a 6 m pre-cabled PVC/PUR cordset terminating the two-wire NAMUR circuit, IP67-rated for washdown and outdoor exposure, and rated across a wide -20 °C to +80 °C operating range that suits both indoor process areas and outdoor tank farms.
Seven Star LLC supplies the genuine ifm NG5021 to industrial and process customers across Oman and the GCC as an authorized channel partner for ifm electronic sensing products, with every unit backed by manufacturer traceability and datasheet-matched documentation. For plants running SIL-rated safety instrumented functions or Ex-classified areas in Muscat, Sohar, or Salalah, sourcing the correct NAMUR-output variant — rather than a substitute standard-output sensor — is essential to keep the loop’s hazardous-area certification intact.
Measurement & Operating Principle
Like all inductive proximity sensors, the NG5021 generates a high-frequency electromagnetic field at its sensing face via an internal oscillator/coil circuit. When a ferrous or non-ferrous metal target enters the 8 mm nominal sensing range, eddy currents induced in the target damp the oscillator amplitude; the sensor’s evaluation circuit detects this damping and switches its output state accordingly. Because the NG5021 uses a NAMUR two-wire interface rather than a switched supply voltage output, the sensor itself draws only a small quiescent current (roughly 1 mA in the undamped state, rising to several mA when damped) supplied and monitored by an external NAMUR isolating amplifier or Zener safety barrier located outside the hazardous area.
This arrangement is what allows the NG5021 to be installed directly in a Zone 0/1 or Zone 20/21 classified area: the sensor circuit itself carries too little energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere, and the safety barrier limits both voltage and current delivered into the hazardous area under fault conditions. The trade-off is that a NAMUR sensor cannot directly drive a PLC digital input — it must be paired with a NAMUR interface module, which also provides wire-break and short-circuit diagnostics that a standard switching sensor does not.
Engineering Design & Construction
The NG5021 uses ifm’s established nickel-plated brass or stainless M18 threaded barrel housing with a double-nut mounting arrangement for non-flush (unshielded) installation, giving an extended sensing range compared to a flush-mount equivalent. The particularly short housing length keeps the sensor compact for installations where axial space is restricted, such as on valve actuators, small conveyor guides, or compact skid packages. The sensing face and internal electronics are fully potted for IP67 ingress protection, and the pre-cabled 6 m cordset removes a connector interface that could otherwise become a point of failure or a source of intrinsic-safety energy-storage concern in the hazardous area.
Switching frequency is rated up to 300 Hz, adequate for the target/count-detection speeds typical of process valve position sensing and rotating equipment proximity detection rather than high-speed part counting. The wide -20 °C to +80 °C temperature rating and robust metal housing make the NG5021 suitable for both indoor panel-adjacent installations and outdoor equipment exposed to Gulf ambient temperatures and humidity.

Industrial Applications
The NG5021 is specified for position and proximity detection in classified hazardous areas: valve open/closed confirmation on process skids, rotating shaft or coupling guard detection, level-switch actuator confirmation, and metal target counting on conveyors located inside Ex-rated zones of refineries, tank farms, gas processing plants, and offshore platforms. Its NAMUR interface also makes it a common retrofit choice when upgrading legacy mechanical limit switches to a solid-state sensor without changing the area’s intrinsic-safety certification basis.
Across Oman’s oil and gas, petrochemical, and desalination sectors, Seven Star LLC supplies the ifm NG5021 to instrumentation teams standardizing hazardous-area proximity sensing on the ifm platform, alongside compatible NAMUR isolating amplifiers and junction box hardware. Our team can help confirm the correct barrier pairing and loop calculation for a given Ex-certified installation before the sensor ships.
