3500/22M Transient Data Interface (TDI)

Description

Overview

The 3500/22M Transient Data Interface (TDI) provides the primary interface between a Bently Nevada 3500 machinery protection rack and System 1 condition-monitoring software. Installed in the left side of the rack, the TDI collects static values, dynamic overall data, and high-resolution transient waveforms from installed modules, timestamps events, and serves them over Ethernet for diagnostics, reporting, and long-term analysis—without interrupting protection functions.

Highlights

  • Rack controller & interface for the 3500 system (supersedes legacy RIM).

  • Transient data capture for startups, shutdowns, trips, and process upsets.

Why Transient Capture Matters

Most machinery failures and the richest diagnostic information occur during transient events — startup, coastdown, a trip, or a process upset — rather than during steady-state running, yet these are exactly the moments a simple overall-vibration trend can miss or smear into a single averaged value. By capturing full-resolution waveform and orbit data through these transient windows and time-stamping every event, the 3500/22M lets a reliability engineer reconstruct what actually happened during a trip or upset after the fact, rather than relying only on operator log entries or a coarse overall-vibration trend, neither of which captures the fine time-resolved detail a genuine transient event contains.

Industrial Applications

The 3500/22M is deployed on critical turbomachinery trains — centrifugal compressors, steam and gas turbines, large motors and generators — across refineries, gas plants, LNG facilities, and power generation stations in Oman and the wider GCC, wherever both continuous protection (trip functions) and rich condition-monitoring data are required from the same physical rack rather than duplicated across separate protection and monitoring systems. Combining both functions in one module also reduces the cabling, cabinet footprint, and long-term spares inventory compared with older architectures that used a separate transient data card alongside the protection monitors.

Ordering Notes

A complete 3500/22M installation requires the TDI module plus a matching TDI I/O module (ordered separately) and, depending on the application, Ethernet or fiber connectivity back to a System 1 server. Seven Star LLC asks customers to share their existing rack part list and System 1 software version when ordering, since firmware and software compatibility between the TDI and the customer’s specific System 1 installation should be confirmed before shipment, avoiding a costly mismatch discovered only after the module is installed.

Redundant and TMR Configurations

For the most critical machinery trains, the 3500 rack can be configured with triple modular redundant (TMR) monitor arrangements, with the TDI outside the protection path, where three independent measurement and voting channels protect against a single sensor or module failure causing an unnecessary or missed trip. This level of redundancy is typically reserved for the largest, most critical compressor or turbine trains where an unplanned trip carries a very high production cost, rather than applied uniformly across every machine in a plant’s rotating equipment population.

Upgrade Path from Legacy RIM

Plants still running the older 3500/20 RIM (Rack Interface Module) can generally upgrade to the 3500/22M in the same rack slot to gain transient waveform capture that the RIM does not provide, since the 22M was designed as its functional successor. Confirm rack firmware and System 1 software compatibility before ordering an upgrade, since older racks may need a firmware update alongside the module swap to fully use the 22M’s expanded transient-capture and networking capabilities.

3500/22M Ordering Information and Part Numbers

The TDI and its I/O module are ordered as 3500/22-AA-BB-CC. Field A is the interface type, where 01 is Standard for normal monitoring applications. Field B selects the I/O module: 01 is 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet, 02 is 100Base-FX fiber optic Ethernet, 03 is 10Base-T/100Base-TX with gold-plated OK Relay contacts and 04 is 100Base-FX with gold-plated OK Relay contacts. Field C is the agency approval: 00 none, 01 CSA/NRTL/C (Class 1, Division 2) and 02 Multi (CSA, ATEX, IECEx).

Listed spares are 288055-01 (Standard Transient Data Interface Module with USB cable), 146031-01 (10Base-T/100Base-TX I/O Module), 146031-02 (100Base-FX Fiber Optic I/O Module), 146031-03 (10Base-T/100Base-TX I/O Module, gold plated) and 146031-04 (100Base-FX I/O Module, gold plated). The USB cable is 123M4610, a 10 foot A to B cable that Bently Nevada specifies in order to keep chassis and ground isolated. Connector headers are 00580441 (3-position), 00580436 (6-position) and 111M5777 (2-position); the operation and maintenance guide is document 161580.

Waveform capability is licensed separately. Static data capture is standard, but dynamic and high-resolution transient data require the 3500/22M Dynamic Data Enabling Disk, ordered as 3500/09-AAA-BBB. Field A sets the number of Steady-State points (000 to 672) and field B the number of Transient points (002 to 672); the two together cannot exceed 672, and one disk can serve several TDIs. Network cables are 138131-AAA for shielded Category 5 with RJ-45 connectors (6 to 320 feet) and 175M0075-AAAA for 100Base-FX fiber with MT-RJ female connectors (10 to 1000 feet).

3500/22M Installation and RIM Upgrade Notes

Every 3500 rack needs one TDI or RIM, and it always sits in Slot 1 beside the power supplies. The TDI is outside the critical protection path, so it does not affect the automatic machinery protection performed by the monitors. When replacing a 3500/20 RIM, Bently Nevada gives a fixed sequence: remove the RIM, remove the RIM I/O, insert the TDI I/O, then insert the TDI. Leaving the old RIM I/O in place will damage the new TDI. Some M-series monitors may not be compatible after such an upgrade, so check with Bently Nevada technical support first.

Both TDI I/O versions carry a 2-pin connector for tying Signal Common to a single-point instrument ground. When this is used, the selector switch on the Power Input Module must be moved toward the arrow marked HP so that Signal Common is isolated from chassis ground. The front keylock sets RUN or PROGRAM mode; RUN blocks configuration changes, and the key can be removed in either position. A laptop connected to the front USB port should run on battery to avoid a ground loop. The OK relay always operates as normally energized.
