Viking Johnson UltraGrip Restrained Coupling DN40-DN600

Description

A restrained coupling that grips the pipe and resists pull-out

The Viking Johnson UltraGrip Coupling joins plain-ended pipes and, unlike a standard coupling, locks onto them. Stainless-grit grippers sit behind the gasket on each end ring; when the bolts are tightened, the grippers bite into the pipe surface so the joint resists the end thrust that internal pressure produces. The datasheet lists 18 sizes from DN40 to DN600 and a wide OD tolerance on every size.

Two product types are listed. The gripping product suits steel, ductile iron, grey cast iron, PE and PVC pipe. The flex product suits steel, ductile iron, grey cast iron, PVC and asbestos cement. Because restraint depends on grip, the datasheet asks for a close-fit support liner on all PE pipes and on thin-walled PVC.

Restraint and where not to use it

The datasheet is specific about use on exposed pipework. Aboveground lines see loads from thermal expansion as well as internal pressure, and these loads can be substantially higher than pressure thrust and cannot always be safely determined. For that reason the maker recommends restricting UltraGrip to buried pipelines, valve chambers and indoor aboveground locations that are not in direct sunlight or exposed to large temperature changes, such as pump houses. The operating temperature printed is -20 C to +30 C, so this is a poor fit for hot process lines in the GCC and a reasonable fit for buried water mains and chamber work.

Selection and ordering guide

  • Match both the pipe material and size: choose the gripping product for steel, ductile iron, grey cast iron, PE or PVC, or the flex product for asbestos cement pipe.
  • Check the OD against the range column; several nominal sizes appear twice (DN500 and DN600) because they cover two OD bands.
  • Decide on EPDM (potable water) or nitrile gaskets.
  • Ask for a support liner for PE or thin-walled PVC pipe.
  • The datasheet shows no single order code string, so provide nominal size, OD band, pipe material and gasket when requesting a quote and have the exact configuration confirmed with the manufacturer.

Installation notes

  • Use the torque for the bolt size: 55-70 Nm on M12, 95-120 Nm on M16 and 210-230 Nm on M20.
  • Insertion depth D differs by size, for example 65-95 mm on DN40, so mark the pipe before assembly.
  • Respect the 8 degree angularity limit and keep the joint buried or sheltered as described above.
  • All water contact components are stated in the datasheet as approved for potable water.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Buried potable and fire water mains, valve chambers, pumping station connections and pipe repairs where the pipeline cannot be anchored by thrust blocks are the natural uses. The restrained design removes the need for concrete thrust blocks in tight trenches. Check the maker limits on temperature and exposure before specifying it for sun-exposed pipework.

Selection and installation notes

Pipe couplings and clamps must be chosen from the actual pipe outside diameter, the pipe material, the working pressure and the joint movement expected, so measure the pipe before ordering and compare the reading with the size range on the data sheet. Clean the pipe surface and remove dirt, scale and sharp edges, mark the insertion depth, centre the coupling over the joint and tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern to the torque in the installation instructions. Check the joint again after the line has been pressurised, and do not use a coupling outside its stated pressure rating.

FAQ

Questions about the Viking Johnson UltraGrip Restrained Coupling

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What does the UltraGrip coupling do that MaxiFit does not?
UltraGrip grips the pipe with stainless-grit grippers, so it resists end load, whereas MaxiFit needs external restraint.
02Which pipe materials can the gripping product join?
The datasheet lists steel, ductile iron, grey cast iron, PE and PVC for the gripping product.
03What is the working pressure?
DN40-DN300 is rated 16 bar for water and 5 bar for gas; DN350-DN400 is 10 bar water; DN450-DN600 is 10 bar water, with -20 C to +30 C operating temperature.
04Can UltraGrip be used on exposed above-ground pipe?
The maker recommends restricting it to buried pipelines, valve chambers and indoor locations away from sunlight and large temperature changes.
05Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Viking Johnson?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat that sources genuine products on request; we do not claim any distributor status.
