A stainless steel single band clamp for fast leak repair

The Viking Johnson HandiClamp single band is a stainless steel pipe repair clamp built from a shell, channel plate, bridging plate, lug plates and nut plates in 304 S15 stainless steel (BS 1449 Part 2) with a rubber gasket. It wraps around a damaged pipe and is tightened on studs, bridging an OD range of 10 mm per size. With the HandiTap variant, a threaded outlet up to 2 inch BSP is available for branch connections.

The datasheet lists a long run of OD bands from 44 to 360 mm and six clamp lengths, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500 mm. Longer clamps cover longer cracks or corroded sections. Pressure is given per OD band and drops as the diameter rises, from 24 bar water on 44 to 83 mm pipe to 1.5 bar gas on 290 to 360 mm pipe.

Selection guide

• Measure the pipe OD and pick the band; the full table has about 40 OD bands from 44 to 360 mm.
• Choose a clamp length to cover the damage plus a margin on each side; 500 mm is offered only on the larger bands.
• Check the pressure for your OD band: ratings fall with size, so a 300 mm pipe is rated 6 bar water and 1.5 bar gas.
• Bolt count rises with length: a 150 mm clamp on 44 to 52 mm pipe uses two M12 bolts, while a 500 mm clamp on the larger bands uses five M14 bolts.
• Pick a clamp with an outlet (HandiTap) only if you need a branch; outlets up to 2 inch BSP are offered.
• Where used on PE pipe, the datasheet advises contacting the maker about clamp length.

Installation notes

• Torque depends on the bolt size: 55-65 Nm on M12, 70-80 Nm on M14, 95-110 Nm on M16.
• HandiClamp does not resist end load; restrain the pipe if the damage leaves it unsupported.
• The clamp accommodates no angular deflection.
• Not suitable for heating systems with fluctuating temperatures.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Stainless steel resists corrosion in humid coastal and brackish conditions, so a HandiClamp is a common emergency repair item for water, cooling water and irrigation pipe up to 360 mm OD. Keep within the +40 C rating and the pressure of the OD band. Weights range from 1.13 kg for the 150 mm clamp on the smallest band to 10.45 kg for the 500 mm clamp on the largest band, so even the largest clamp can be carried and fitted by one crew member in a trench.

When you enquire about the HandiClamp, give the measured pipe outside diameter within the 44 to 360 mm range, the clamp length needed from the 150 to 500 mm choices, and whether a branch outlet is wanted, so that the EPDM gasketed stainless band can be matched to the datasheet.

Selection and installation notes

Pipe couplings and clamps must be chosen from the actual pipe outside diameter, the pipe material, the working pressure and the joint movement expected, so measure the pipe before ordering and compare the reading with the size range on the data sheet. Clean the pipe surface and remove dirt, scale and sharp edges, mark the insertion depth, centre the coupling over the joint and tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern to the torque in the installation instructions. Check the joint again after the line has been pressurised, and do not use a coupling outside its stated pressure rating.
