A wide cylindrical roller bearing that locates the shaft in both directions

The SKF NUP 2312 ECP is a single row cylindrical roller bearing of the 23 dimension series with a 60 mm bore, 130 mm outside diameter and 46 mm width. The NUP design has two integral flanges on the outer ring, and one integral flange and one loose flange ring on the inner ring, so it can locate the shaft axially in both directions as well as carry high radial load. SKF lists the bearing in the Explorer performance class and notes the separable design, which allows the inner and outer parts to be mounted independently and interchanged.

In the same 60 mm bore size the NU 312 ECP and NJ 311 ECP pages on this site describe the lighter 3 series; the 2312 is a wider and much stronger bearing, with a dynamic rating of 260 kN and a static rating of 265 kN. This makes it a common choice for gearbox shafts, large electric motors, pump drives and industrial fans where the bearing has to carry heavy radial load, run at moderate to high speed and also provide the fixed (locating) position on the shaft.

Choosing between NUP, NU, NJ and N

A cylindrical roller bearing can only take the shaft position it is designed for. NU and N types allow axial movement of the inner ring relative to the outer ring and are used as the floating bearing. NJ types accept axial load in one direction, and the NUP type locates the shaft in both directions. For that reason a NUP is normally used on only one side of a shaft, with an NU type at the other end; if you also fit a locating deep groove bearing, the NUP flanges are not needed. The loose flange of the NUP is separate from the inner ring, so keep it together with its bearing when handling.

Axial load on a cylindrical roller bearing is carried by the flange to roller end contact, and the load capacity is limited, so the axial component should be small compared with the radial load and the bearing needs adequate lubrication. Check the shaft and housing fits, whether you need C3 clearance in a warm motor or gearbox, and the shaft shoulder heights from the SKF catalogue.
