SKF H 313 Adapter Sleeve with KM 13 Lock Nut and MB 13 Washer

Description

The adapter sleeve that fits a tapered bore bearing onto a plain 60 mm shaft

The SKF H 313 is an adapter sleeve with a 60 mm bore, supplied complete with a KM 13 lock nut and an MB 13 lock washer. SKF describes adapter sleeves as the most commonly used components for locating bearings with a tapered bore on a cylindrical seat, because they work on plain shafts and stepped shafts alike. The sleeve is slit, and its outside surface has a 1:12 external taper that matches the tapered bore of bearings with the suffix K.

Using a sleeve means the shaft needs no taper machined into it and the bearing position can be adjusted anywhere along the shaft. That is why adapter sleeves are common in conveyors, fans, blowers, gearboxes and plummer block housings, where a bearing must be placed at a variable position on a drawn bar or ground shaft.

Which bearings use the H 313

The SKF product tables list the H 313 with these tapered bore bearings: 1313 EK (self-aligning ball), 2213 EKTN9 (self-aligning ball), 22213 EK and 21313 EK (spherical roller), so one sleeve covers several bearing types of different widths. The SNL plummer block tables list 22213 EK with H 313 for a 60 mm shaft in the SNL 513-611 housing, and C 2213 KTN9 with the H 313 E sleeve, a related but different designation for CARB bearings. The accessory hydraulic nut HMV 13E is named as an associated product on the SKF product page.

Please confirm the exact bearing you are mounting, because a sleeve is specific to a bearing bore and width. A sleeve with the wrong designation will not match the bearing bore and width.

Mounting guidance

The SKF installation guide describes mounting on an adapter sleeve in steps: remove burrs, wipe preservative from the sleeve and shaft, slip the sleeve onto the shaft with the thread outboard, place the bearing on the sleeve leading with the large bore, apply the lock nut with its chamfer toward the bearing, and tighten with a hook spanner. The guide gives three methods to set the drive-up, namely radial clearance reduction, angular drive-up and hydraulic mounting, and it warns not to apply the lock washer until the drive-up is finished. When the nut is tight, the washer tang is bent into a nut slot.

Dimensions are: sleeve bore 60 mm, small taper outside diameter 65 mm, length B1 of 50 mm, thread M65x2, lock nut outside diameter 85 mm, nut width 12 mm and 13.5 mm including the washer. The SKF catalogue lists a mass of 0.4 kg. See Electric Motors for bearings on this site and the SKF TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool for checking shaft alignment after fitting.

Mounting a bearing on the H 313 sleeve: key steps

The SKF Bearing Installation and Maintenance Guide gives a step-by-step procedure for mounting tapered bore bearings on adapter sleeves. The bearing is placed on the sleeve with the large bore of the inner ring matching the taper. The lock nut is then applied with its chamfer facing the bearing. The lock washer is not fitted at this stage, because the drive-up procedure may damage it. A light coat of oil on the chamfered face of the nut makes mounting easier.

The nut is hand-tightened with a spanner wrench until the sleeve grips the shaft and can neither move axially nor rotate. This is the zero point, and the bearing is located in its correct axial position at this stage. SKF suggests a simple check: put a screwdriver in the split at the large end of the sleeve and try to turn the sleeve. If it no longer turns, the zero point has been reached. From there the bearing is driven up by the tightening angle given in the guide’s tables for the bearing series and bore size.

Fitting the MB 13 lock washer correctly

After drive-up, the guide instructs removing the lock nut, installing the lock washer with its inner prong facing the bearing and located in the sleeve slot, and refitting the nut until tight, without driving the bearing further up the taper, as that would reduce radial internal clearance further. The washer tang nearest a nut slot is then bent into it. If the slot is slightly past the tang, the nut is tightened to meet it rather than loosened, and the tab should not be bent to the bottom of the slot. Finally, check that the shaft and outer ring rotate easily by hand.

For larger bearings or where controlled drive-up is needed, the hydraulic nut HMV 13E listed by SKF as an associated product can be used.

About brand

SKF is the Swedish bearing manufacturer founded in Gothenburg in 1907. The company was built on the self-aligning ball bearing developed by engineer Sven Wingquist, who became its first managing director. Today SKF also makes seals, lubrication systems, condition monitoring equipment and maintenance tools.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list SKF bearings, greases, automatic lubricators, condition monitoring sensors and maintenance tools, and supply them to maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC by designation.

An SKF designation describes the bearing exactly. In 6205-2RSH/C3, "62" is a light-series deep groove ball bearing, "05" means a 25 mm bore (05 × 5), "2RSH" means rubber seals on both sides, and "C3" means internal clearance larger than normal, which motors often need because the inner ring runs warmer than the outer. Choosing the right grease matters just as much: a general grease such as LGMT 2 suits most motors, while heavy loads, high temperatures or slow speeds need an EP, high-temperature or high-viscosity grade.

Where SKF products are used

In Oman and the GCC, SKF bearings, lubricants and tools are used by maintenance teams in oil and gas, power and desalination, cement, mining, steel, water and food plants, and by motor and pump repair workshops.
