Timken EJ and EM Spherical Roller Bearings 222 and 223 Series
Description
Timken EJ and EM spherical roller bearings for heavy radial loads and shaft misalignment
Timken spherical roller bearings carry heavy radial loads, moderate thrust in both directions and a shaft that is not perfectly aligned with its housing. The inner ring with its two rows of barrel-shaped rollers can self-centre in the outer ring, so the load stays on the middle of each roller when the shaft deflects or the housings are slightly out of line. That is why this bearing type is specified for gear drives, fans and blowers, conveyors, jaw crushers, shaker screens, paper mills and continuous casters, the applications Timken lists on its product page.
This page covers the standard radial range in the 222 and 223 series that Timken prints in its Spherical Roller Bearing Catalog, in the steel-cage EJ and brass-cage EM designs. Timken states that the improved internal geometry gives 4% to 8% higher load ratings, or 14% to 29% longer predicted bearing life, and that guiding the rollers in the cage pockets (no centre guide ring) removes a friction point and cuts rotational torque by 4% to 10%. Rollers are guided by the cage pockets and cage face slots help oil flow and purge contaminants.

Choosing between EJ and EM cages and the suffixes to order
The EJ steel cage is the standard choice up to 600 mm outside diameter and is available in all sizes shown. The brass EM cage is offered for severe shock, vibration, high acceleration or marginal lubrication; in the sample sizes the EM version shows slightly lower or equal ratings than EJ (for example 22208 EM is listed at 99.6 / 93.4 kN against 104 / 99.7 kN for EJ) but different speed values, so compare the catalogue line for the exact part. A tapered-bore K bearing is mounted on an adapter or withdrawal sleeve; the cylindrical-bore version needs a press or shrink fit on the shaft.
Clearance, cage, bore and lubrication suffixes are added to the basic number, for example 22210EJW33C3. Timken also offers Solid Lube fills for these bearings, listed with their own maximum speeds. For a single worked part, see the Timken 22216EJW33 page on this site.
What to confirm before ordering
Confirm the full designation printed on the old bearing, cylindrical or tapered bore, clearance class, cage type, whether the W33 groove is wanted, the sleeve for K bearings, the operating speed and the housing it will sit in. Storage guidance in the catalogue: keep bearings in original packing, at 0 to 40 degrees Celsius and below 60 percent relative humidity, and never spin a bearing with compressed air. More bearings are listed under Electric Motors, Pumps and Turbines.

About brand
The Timken Company is an American manufacturer of bearings and power transmission products. Henry Timken patented an improved tapered roller bearing in 1898 and incorporated the company in St. Louis in 1899; it moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1901 and is headquartered in North Canton, Ohio. Timken is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and describes itself as the world's largest maker of tapered roller bearings.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Timken bearings, mounted units and lubrication products for maintenance departments and workshops in Oman and the GCC.

Timken products we list
Ordering Timken bearings: what we need
Give the complete part number stamped on the bearing, including any prefix and suffix. Inch-series tapered roller bearings have separate numbers for cone and cup, so quote both. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position. For housed units give the housing type, shaft size and locking method. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.
Facts checked against Timken's SEC filings and published company histories, October 2026.
