Timken Thrust Spherical Roller Bearings TSR-EJ TSR-EM

Description

Thrust spherical roller bearings TSR-EJ and TSR-EM for heavy axial loads

Timken thrust spherical roller bearings (type TSR) are designed with spherically contoured rollers arranged in a steep angular configuration. This gives high thrust capacity with low friction and continuous roller alignment. In addition to axial load they can accommodate moderate radial load, and they keep working when the shaft and housing are or become misaligned under load.

Timken describes these bearings as preferred when conditions include heavy loads, difficulty in establishing or maintaining housing alignment, or expected shaft deflection. Internal self-alignment compensates for shaft deflection and housing distortion, so elevated edge stress on the rollers, which limits life in other bearing types, does not develop.

Technical specifications

Speed guidance Maximum bearing outside diameter speeds typically 25 to 30 m/s depending on size and temperature
Load Heavy axial load in one direction with moderate radial load
Series Dimension series 293 and 294 examples in the catalog table

Sample TSR-EJ sizes from the catalog table, with bore d, outside diameter D and height T in mm, static load rating Ca0 and dynamic load rating Ca in kN, and weight in kg:

Bearing d / D / T (mm) Ca0 / Ca (kN) Weight (kg)
29418EJ 90 / 190 / 60 1890 / 820 7.4
29320EJ 100 / 170 / 42 1240 / 462 3.5

Cages, lubrication and mounting

Timken thrust spherical roller bearings are now offered with the maximum-capacity E-type cage construction. Bearings with a bore under 320 mm are typically TSR-EJ with a window-type steel cage, while larger bores are typically TSR-EM with a finger-type brass cage that supports a higher dynamic load rating. The catalog also gives minimum working thrust load guidance, shoulder diameters and housing and shaft dimensions in each table row.

Because the rollers are driven by axial load, a minimum working thrust load is required to keep the rollers properly guided, and lubrication with extreme-pressure additives is advised for high thrust. The preferred oil inlet is at the bore, where centrifugal force carries the lubricant radially out to the rollers. Because spherical alignment tolerates deflection, welded housing frames can be used instead of complex castings.

Confirm the shaft and housing seat dimensions, the shoulder diameters listed beside each bearing, the lubricant viscosity and the expected thrust load before ordering. Shaft and housing seats should be square to the axis of rotation, and the catalog tolerance tables for thrust spherical roller bearings give the allowed variation of bore, outside diameter and height for each tolerance class.

About brand

The Timken Company is an American manufacturer of bearings and power transmission products. Henry Timken patented an improved tapered roller bearing in 1898 and incorporated the company in St. Louis in 1899; it moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1901 and is headquartered in North Canton, Ohio. Timken is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and describes itself as the world's largest maker of tapered roller bearings.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Timken bearings, mounted units and lubrication products for maintenance departments and workshops in Oman and the GCC.

Ordering Timken bearings: what we need

Give the complete part number stamped on the bearing, including any prefix and suffix. Inch-series tapered roller bearings have separate numbers for cone and cup, so quote both. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position. For housed units give the housing type, shaft size and locking method. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.

Facts checked against Timken's SEC filings and published company histories, October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a thrust spherical roller bearing used for?
It carries heavy axial load with moderate radial load while tolerating shaft and housing misalignment.
How much misalignment is allowed?
Timken gives an allowable axial misalignment of plus or minus 2.5 degrees; life is reduced if it is exceeded.
What is the difference between TSR-EJ and TSR-EM?
EJ has a window-type steel cage and is typical under 320 mm bore; EM has a finger-type machined brass cage for larger bores.
Is a minimum load needed?
Yes, the catalog calls for a minimum working thrust load so the rollers are guided properly.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Timken?
No, Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat that quotes against the designation you provide.
