Fluke 1550C 5 kV Insulation Resistance Tester

Description

5 kV insulation tester for switchgear, motors, generators and cables

The Fluke 1550C is a 5 kV insulation resistance tester for high-voltage equipment, covering the range of test voltages specified in IEEE 43-2000. Test voltage is selectable in 50 V steps from 250 V to 1000 V and in 100 V steps above 1000 V up to 5 kV. The tester measures resistance up to 1 TOhm and adds capacitance and leakage-current measurement, timed PI/DAR ratio tests with a timer up to 99 minutes, and a ramp function for breakdown testing. A guard terminal removes the effect of surface leakage current on high-resistance readings.

A live-circuit warning shows line voltage up to 600 V ac or dc before a test starts. The data sheet states a CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V safety rating, more than 750 tests between charges and a 3-year warranty. With the optional ir3000 FC connector the tester can be started, stopped and logged from the Fluke Connect app; the data sheet notes that not all Fluke Connect functions may be available at the time of purchase.

Choosing the right test voltage

Rated voltage of the equipment sets the test voltage: lower values for low-voltage motors and cables, 2500 V and 5000 V for medium-voltage cable, switchgear and large machines. The data sheet accuracy bands show that readings above the 5 % band are specified to 20 % only, so trend values rather than relying on a single absolute figure at very high resistance. Use the PI/DAR tests to separate moisture and contamination from healthy insulation, and the guard terminal on dirty or humid terminations.

What to confirm before ordering

Decide between the 1550C (5 kV) and the 1555 (10 kV) that share the data sheet, the base unit or the kit with hard case and calibration certificate, and whether the Fluke Connect wireless connector is needed. For lower-voltage maintenance testing see the Fluke 1587 FC and

Fluke 1507.

About brand

Ask an instrument technician which calibrator is in the toolbox and the answer is often a Fluke. Founded in 1948 and based in Everett, Washington, the company makes handheld test tools, and its Fluke Calibration line supplies laboratory standards. Seven Star LLC lists Fluke process calibrators, electrical test tools and bench calibrators, and sources them for maintenance teams and calibration laboratories in Oman.

Fluke calibrators and test tools listed

The main Fluke products on this page fall into three groups, besides other test tools such as further multimeters, a thermometer, an anemometer, a vibration tester and a portable appliance tester:

  • Process tools: the 754 documenting process calibrator with HART, 789 ProcessMeter, 721 dual sensor pressure calibrator and 729 automatic pressure calibrator
  • Electrical test: the 376 FC true-RMS clamp meter with iFlex probe and the 1587 FC insulation multimeter
  • Fluke Calibration bench standards: 5522A, 5502A, 5500A and 5080A multi-product calibrators, the 5720A multifunction calibrator, 8508A reference multimeter, 6100A electrical power standard and 9640A RF reference source

Several of the bench models belong to earlier generations. When a model is no longer produced, we check the manufacturer's documentation and propose the successor it names.

Where Fluke instruments are used

Fluke process calibrators are used for loop checks, transmitter calibration and valve tests in oil and gas, power and water plants. Clamp meters and insulation testers serve electrical maintenance on motors, switchgear and cables. The bench calibrators and reference multimeters are the working standards of electrical calibration laboratories in the GCC, where they calibrate multimeters, clamp meters, process tools and power analyzers.

Ordering Fluke instruments: what we need

Send the exact model with its suffix, since versions differ. A Fluke 721, for example, is defined by its two pressure ranges, and a 729 by its maximum pressure. For bench calibrators, list the options you need, such as oscilloscope calibration or power quality options, the line voltage, and the type of calibration certificate you require from the manufacturer. For Fluke multimeters and clamp meters, add the kit contents wanted, such as probes, leads or cases.
