Fisher V250 Hi-Ball Rotary Control Valve

Description

Overview

The Fisher V250 Hi-Ball is a rotary control valve designed for heavy-duty throttling and on-off service. It is a flangeless ball valve that installs between two CL600 or CL900 pipeline flanges, depending on size, and is typically used for throttling and controlled flow applications on gas transmission lines, downstream gas supply networks and liquid pipelines. The valve is available with a single ball seal, a flow ring, or a dual-seal construction, giving users a choice between tight unidirectional shutoff, higher temperature capability and bidirectional shutoff.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Fisher V250 to pipeline operators, gas utilities and EPC contractors in Oman and across the GCC. Large-diameter gas transmission and city gate stations in the region need valves that combine high capacity with stable throttling, and our engineers in Muscat help customers specify the Fisher V250 size, seal construction, trim and actuator package using the official Fisher V250 datasheet.

Operating Principle

The valve uses a reduced-port ball that rotates up to 90 degrees to vary the flow area. The reduced ball port gives a modified equal percentage flow characteristic and an excellent response characteristic, while the ball construction delivers greater capacity than conventional globe valves for both compressible and incompressible fluids. Controllable flow begins once the ball has rotated past a small dead angle, which ranges from 8 to 17 degrees depending on valve size, and the rest of the rotation provides the throttling range.

In the closed position, POM (polyoxymethylene) ball seals bear against the ball to provide shutoff of 0.0001 percent of maximum valve capacity. The Fisher V250 drive train uses a tapered-polygon ball-to-shaft connection and a clamped splined actuator connection, which remove lost motion and dead band so the valve responds accurately to small changes in controller output. A pressure-balanced drive shaft with PTFE-lined bearings and a pressure-assisted shaft sealing arrangement supports long, reliable service.

Engineering Design of the Fisher V250

Sizes NPS 4 through 12 fit between CL600 or CL900 raised-face or ring-type joint flanges to ASME B16.5, and sizes NPS 16 through 24 fit between CL600 flanges. The valve body, body outlet and seal protector or flow ring are LCC carbon steel as standard, with WCC steel or CF8M stainless steel as options. Shafts are 17-4PH stainless steel with S20910 optional, the ball is chrome-plated WCC steel or chrome-plated 316 stainless steel, bearings are PTFE-lined 316 stainless steel, and the seal carrier is 316 stainless steel.

A two-piece ball and shaft assembly allows a complete trim overhaul with minimal parts replacement. An optional live-loaded PTFE packing system with Belleville springs and very smooth shaft surfaces gives excellent stem sealing. The Fisher V250 can be installed in any position, though the recommended orientation is in a horizontal pipeline with the shaft horizontal and the ball closing downward, and the actuator can be mounted right-hand or left-hand as viewed from the inlet. Approximate weights range from 73 kg for NPS 4 to 2404 kg for NPS 24.

Key Features

Emerson Bulletin 51.3:V250 lists these Fisher V250 design features.

  • High pressure drop capability of up to 103 bar at 82 °C for CL600 and 155 bar at 38 °C for CL900 constructions.
  • Tapered-polygon ball-to-shaft and clamped splined actuator connections remove lost motion for throttling control.
  • A reduced ball port provides a modified equal percentage characteristic and excellent response.
  • Single-seal and dual-seal constructions shut off to 0.0001 percent of maximum capacity.
  • Ball valve construction offers greater capacity than conventional globe valves.
  • Sour service materials are available to NACE MR0175-2002.
  • A pressure-balanced drive shaft with PTFE-lined bearings gives a long service life.
  • Options include line flange bolts, buried service actuator adaptation, dual seal and live-loaded PTFE packing.

Industrial Applications

The Fisher V250 is aimed at the high-capacity end of pipeline control. Typical duties include pressure and flow control at gas transmission compressor and metering stations, city gate and network pressure control, flow control on crude, condensate and refined product pipelines, and on-off or throttling service on large headers where a globe valve would be oversized and costly. The dual-seal construction with a double block and bleed test connection suits bidirectional pipeline sections, and the buried service adaptation supports underground installations. In Oman these applications are found along the national gas network, at processing plants feeding power and desalination stations, and at export and storage terminals near Muscat, Sohar and Duqm.

Seven Star LLC supports pipeline valve projects across Oman and the GCC with application review and regional delivery coordination. The Fisher V250 is commonly automated with the Fisher 1061 pneumatic piston rotary actuator and positioned by the Fisher FIELDVUE DVC6200 digital valve controller. For smaller lines and general process throttling, see the Fisher V150 Vee-Ball segmented ball control valve.

About brand
Most control valve specifications in Middle East oil and gas projects mention Fisher somewhere. The brand dates to 1880 and is tied to Marshalltown, Iowa, home of its flow test laboratory. Seven Star LLC lists Fisher control valves, actuators, positioners, regulators and level controllers, and sources complete assemblies and individual parts for process plants in Oman.

Fisher control valve and actuator families

Fisher groups its valves by body style. On this page you will find sliding-stem globe valves such as the easy-e ET, the high-pressure HPT and HPAT, and the GX valve and actuator system. Rotary designs include the Vee-Ball V150, V200 and V300 segmented ball valves, the V250 Hi-Ball and the CV500 eccentric plug valve. Actuators include the 1052 spring-and-diaphragm rotary actuator and the easy-Drive electric actuator. Instruments complete the loop: FIELDVUE digital valve controllers, pneumatic positioners, the 2500 pneumatic level controller with displacer sensor and the DLC3100 digital level controller. Fisher regulators such as the 627 reduce pressure on fuel gas and instrument supply lines.

Where Fisher valves are used

Fisher control valves handle throttling duty on separators, compressors, steam systems, gas dehydration, refining units and power plant feedwater across the GCC. Vee-Ball valves suit fibrous or erosive fluids and high capacity, easy-e globe valves are the general-purpose choice, and HP series bodies cover high pressure classes.

Ordering Fisher valves and parts: what we need

Every Fisher assembly carries a serial number on the actuator and body nameplates, and the manufacturer's records link that number to the original build: body size and rating, trim, materials, actuator size and bench set. For spare parts, send the serial number or a nameplate photo and the part needed, such as trim set, packing kit, diaphragm or positioner. For a new valve, send the process data sheet with fluid, flow, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, line size, rating, end connections, fail action and material or sour service requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which seal constructions are available on the Fisher V250?
There are three. The single ball seal construction gives tight shutoff in forward flow, the flow ring construction allows forward or reverse flow and suits higher temperatures, and the dual-seal construction places a seal in both the inlet and outlet for bidirectional shutoff. The dual-seal version includes a tapped and plugged connection that can be used in a double block and bleed system to test seal integrity.
How tight is the shutoff of the Fisher V250?
Single-seal and dual-seal constructions achieve 0.0001 percent of maximum valve capacity, which the bulletin states is less than 1 percent of Class IV under ANSI/FCI 70-2 and IEC 60534-4. The flow ring construction is rated at 1 percent of maximum valve capacity.
What pressure drop can the Fisher V250 handle?
Depending on construction, the valve can take a maximum static pressure differential of 103 bar at 82 C for CL600 bodies and 155 bar at 38 C for CL900 bodies in LCC steel and CF8M. Some sizes and shaft materials have further limits listed in the bulletin, so the final rating is confirmed for each selection.
Is the Fisher V250 suitable for sour gas service?
Yes. Sour service trim is available with heat-treated LCC steel, 17-4PH H1150 DBL shafts, heat-treated chrome-plated ball, fluorocarbon O-rings and B7M/2HM bolting, with materials complying with NACE MR0175-2002.
