Chauvin Arnoux CA 6116N Multifunction Installation Tester

Description

CA 6116N is a portable multifunction installation tester from Chauvin Arnoux that checks the safety of low-voltage electrical installations: voltage, continuity, insulation, loop impedance, earth resistance and residual current devices in a single case, with a 5.7 inch colour display.

One tester for new and existing installations

According to the manual, the CA 6116N and its sibling CA 6117 are intended to test a new installation before it is energised, to check an installation already in service, or to diagnose a fault. The two models share one manual and one set of functions; the only difference stated by Chauvin Arnoux is that the CA 6117 can also test type B residual current devices and calculate voltage drop in cables.

The tester is driven by a thirteen-position rotary switch, a five-key navigator, four context-sensitive function keys, a help key, a brightness key and a dedicated TEST button. Results are shown on a 320 x 240 point colour graphic screen, and a USB port connects the instrument to a PC for Dataview software.

Functions listed in the user manual

  • Voltage measurement 0.2 to 550 V AC or DC with frequency display.
  • Continuity at 200 mA and at 12 mA, plus resistance measurement up to 399.9 kΩ.
  • Insulation resistance at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 V.
  • Loop impedance (Zs) in tripping and non-tripping modes, line impedance (Zi), short-circuit current and fault-voltage calculation.
  • Earth resistance with two rods (3P), on a live circuit with one auxiliary probe, and selective earth with an optional clamp.
  • Residual current device tests of types AC, A and F in ramp, pulse and non-tripping modes.

CA 6116N or CA 6117

The manual covers both models, so check the purchase code against your test plan. Choose the CA 6117 when you must test type B, B+ or EV residual current devices, for example in EV charging circuits or around variable-speed drives, or when you need the voltage-drop calculation. For AC, A and F devices the CA 6116N covers the same ground. Standard earth kits, a continuity pole and the two current clamps are optional accessories.

Setup and use

The unit ships with a mains charger, a USB cable, a three-wire tripod lead with mains plug, three probe tips and three crocodile clips (red, blue and green), two elbowed-straight safety leads, a remote probe, a hand strap, a four-point hands-free strap and a carrying bag.

Measurements must be made on battery power: the manual states the instrument is not designed to operate while the charger is connected. Charge overnight if the battery indicator shows fewer than three bars, and keep the unit upright while charging to help the battery stay cool.

Typical uses in Oman and the GCC

Electrical contractors and consultants can use a single tester for the periodic inspection and handover tests of villas, commercial buildings and industrial distribution boards. Loop impedance and prospective short-circuit current support protection-device checks, insulation tests cover final circuits, and RCD tests are common on socket circuits. Keep the unit within the manual limit of 60 °C in summer.

Accessories from Chauvin Arnoux

The manual lists a 15 m earth kit, 3P earth kits of 50 m and 100 m, a 30 m single-rod kit, the C177A and MN77 clamps, a continuity pole, a charging stand for the lithium-ion pack and Dataview software. Replacement parts include the battery pack, USB cable and mains cables. See other test instruments in the Portable Test & Measurement category.

About brand

Chauvin Arnoux is a French maker of electrical test and measuring instruments, founded in Paris in 1893 by engineer Raphaël Chauvin, who was joined in partnership by René Arnoux in 1894. The company built galvanometers in its early years and a universal tester in 1927. Chauvin Arnoux is still family-run, with its head office in Asnières-sur-Seine near Paris.
