Megger SMRT410 Multi-Phase Relay Test System

Description

Overview

The Megger SMRT410 is a multi-phase relay test system for commissioning and maintaining protection schemes. It is a lightweight, field-portable test set that can test electromechanical, solid-state and microprocessor-based protective relays, motor overload relays and similar devices, and it offers up to four voltage channels and six high-current channels. The Megger SMRT410 also provides high output power in both the voltage and current channels, which makes it capable of testing busbar, transformer differential, distance, directional and overcurrent protection as well as synchronising and frequency functions.

Protection engineers in Oman and the GCC work with relays from many manufacturers across power stations, transmission and feeder substations, oil and gas networks and industrial plants. Seven Star LLC supplies the Megger SMRT410 from Muscat with engineering support, and can review your relay population, required channel count, IEC 61850 needs and software choices before proposing the correct configuration and accessories.

Operating Principle

The Megger SMRT410 is a modular generator. Each VIGEN module provides a voltage or current output, and the number of modules fitted determines the channel count; a maximum of six channels is available per unit. Each current channel is rated for 32 A at 200 VA RMS continuously and up to 60 A at 319 VA RMS for short durations, with a flat power curve between 4 A and 32 A that keeps the compliance voltage high at the load. Three current channels can be paralleled to supply up to 180 A at 957 VA for instantaneous overcurrent relays, and two channels in series give 100 V for high-impedance relays.

The voltage channels deliver variable output of 0 to 30, 150 or 300 V at 150 VA with a flat power curve between 30 and 150 V. A voltage channel can be converted into a current channel so that a five-channel unit can supply ten currents, and up to five SMRT units can be daisy-chained, time-synchronised and controlled as one system for large busbar protection schemes or multiple merging units. Binary inputs and outputs allow the test set to act as a circuit breaker simulator and a closed-loop power system simulator for reclosing and sequence tests.

Engineering Design of the Megger SMRT410

The Megger SMRT410 is controlled either from the handheld Smart Touch View Interface, a full-colour touch-screen controller that connects through a Power over Ethernet port, or from the integrated display of the SMRT410D version. The built-in operating system and Relay Test Management Software mean that manual, steady-state and dynamic tests, including pre-set test routines for popular relays, can be run without a computer. For fully automatic testing the RTMS software on a PC is supplied with every unit and does not require a dongle or licence, so it can be loaded on as many customer-owned computers as needed.

Test capabilities of the Megger SMRT410 include programmable waveforms with DC offset and harmonics, transient replay of IEEE C37.111 COMTRADE files, satellite-synchronised end-to-end testing with a GPS receiver or IRIG-B source, and a low-level Rogowski mode that converts current channels into millivolt sources. For digital substations the unit supports IEC 61850 GOOSE testing with the Megger GOOSE Configurator and IEC 61850 9-2 LE sampled values with a Sampled Values Analyser that can publish up to three streams. Ten programmable inputs and six programmable outputs handle timing and logic, and audible and visual alarms indicate short circuit, open circuit or thermal overload.

Key Features

Protection test teams value the following characteristics of the Megger SMRT410:

  • High-power outputs of 60 A at 319 VA per current phase and flexible configuration of up to four voltage phases and up to ten current phases.
  • Touch-screen operation through the handheld controller or an on-board display, so most relay tests need no PC.
  • Daisy-chaining of up to five units, giving up to thirty current channels when SMRT units are combined for large bus protection tests.
  • Steady-state and dynamic testing, COMTRADE transient replay and GPS-synchronised end-to-end tests.
  • IEC 61850 GOOSE testing capability and IEC 61850 9-2 LE sampled values compliance for digital substations.
  • Constant power output that avoids range changes under load and often removes the need to parallel channels for high burden relays.
  • Circuit breaker simulation, ten binary inputs and six outputs for reclosing and sequence testing.
  • Relay Test Management Software included without a licence dongle and available in Standard and Enhanced levels.

Industrial Applications

The Megger SMRT410 covers a broad list of protection functions: overcurrent, distance, directional power, under and over voltage, frequency, synchronising, differential, out-of-step and reclosing, among others according to the application guide in the datasheet. In Oman, commissioning engineers can use one test set for generator protection at a power station, feeder protection in a grid substation and motor protection at a petrochemical plant, then move on to IEC 61850 functional testing when the substation is digitised.

Utilities in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah and EPC contractors working in oil and gas can combine the Megger SMRT410 with reference instruments for verifying measurements and analogue signals. Customers who already hold test equipment such as the Fluke 6100A electrical power standard, the Fluke 5502A multi-product calibrator or the Fluke 754 documenting process calibrator can review them together with the relay test set, and Seven Star LLC can supply leads, controllers and accessories for a complete protection test package.

About brand
For many electricians the word Megger simply means an insulation test, which says enough about how long the Dover company has been building test instruments: since 1889. Seven Star LLC lists Megger portable testers for insulation resistance, low resistance and cable fault location, and supplies Megger instruments and accessories to utilities, contractors and plant maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Megger instruments listed on this page

  • MIT1025/2: 10 kV insulation resistance tester for cables, motors, generators and switchgear.
  • DLRO10X: 10 A digital low resistance ohmmeter for joints, busbars, breaker contacts and bonding.
  • TDR2000/3: dual-channel time domain reflectometer for locating faults on metallic cables.

Ordering Megger testers: what we need

Give the complete model name including the suffix, because Megger uses suffixes to separate versions; the TDR2000/3 and TDR2000/3P, for instance, differ in the test leads supplied. List the test leads, clamps, cases or software you want with the instrument, and say if a manufacturer test certificate must accompany it. If you are unsure of the model, describe the asset, its rated voltage and the test your procedure calls for. Other Megger product groups, such as tan delta, battery and circuit breaker test sets, can be quoted on the same basis.
