Brand: Chauvin Arnoux
Chauvin Arnoux CA 6541 1 kV Insulation Tester
Description
CA 6541 is a battery-powered 1 kV megohmmeter from Chauvin Arnoux for site insulation testing at 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 V DC, with a measuring range up to 4 TΩ, continuity at over 200 mA, resistance, capacitance and voltage measurement in a rugged case with a back-lit display and bargraph.
Insulation, continuity and PI testing in one site case
According to the manual, the CA 6541 and CA 6543 are portable megohmmeters in a rugged construction-site casing with a cover. They measure voltage, insulation, continuity, resistance and capacitance, and show the result numerically and as a bargraph. The CA 6541 runs on eight LR14 (C) cells; the CA 6543 has a rechargeable NiMH pack, can run directly from the mains, and adds memory, a real-time clock and an RS232 interface for PC control and printing.
The CA 6541 is therefore the simpler of the two: a nine-position rotary switch picks the function, six keys handle smoothing, alarm, timer, the DAR and PI ratios and the R(t) curve function, and one START/STOP button runs the test. Automatic detection of AC or DC voltage on the terminals inhibits or stops a measurement, and the item under test is discharged automatically at the end.
Features listed in the manual
- Five test voltages: 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 V DC, nominal current above 1 mA at the nominal voltage.
- Insulation resistance from 2 kΩ at 50 V to 4 TΩ at 1000 V.
- DAR and PI calculation from 0.000 to 9.999.
- Continuity at over 200 mA with lead compensation limited to 5 Ω, plus resistance measurement.
- Capacitance measurement after discharge, 0.005 to 4.999 µF.
- Digital filtering, programmable alarm thresholds, timer and defective-fuse detection.
- Automatic discharge of residual high voltage.

CA 6541 or CA 6543
The ranges and test voltages are the same in both models. Choose the CA 6541 for routine maintenance work where results are written down on the job and battery cells are convenient; choose the CA 6543 if you need stored measurements (about 1,500 insulation tests are quoted for it), a real-time clock and PC or printer connection. Confirm the model code before ordering because the two share this manual.
Setup and precautions
The CA 6541 is supplied in a cardboard box with a shoulder bag containing red and blue 1.5 m safety leads, a black guarded lead, three crocodile clips, a test probe, eight LR14 cells, a quick start guide, a safety data sheet and a verification certificate. To fit the cells, switch to OFF with all terminals disconnected, release the four captive screws, remove the front panel and mind the seal.
The manual specifies leads and instrument for 600 V in category III, tells the user to use only the leads and accessories supplied, to keep fingers behind the guard and to fit the correct fuse type.
Typical work in Oman and the GCC
Electrical contractors and maintenance teams use a 1 kV megohmmeter for insulation checks on low-voltage cables, switchboards, motors and heaters, and the PI and DAR ratios help judge motor windings over time. The -10 to +55 °C operating range suits outdoor site work in summer; as the manual notes for all insulation testing, take care when the temperature is near the dew point because humidity affects the reading.
Accessories and spares
The manual lists a remote-control probe, a set of two test probes, and a set of three 3 m safety leads (red, blue and guarded black) as accessories; spares include 1.5 m lead sets, crocodile clips, accessory bag no. 6 and both fuse types. For the CA 6543 it also lists a serial printer and adapter. Related instruments are in the Portable Test & Measurement category.
