Bently Nevada 990-05-70-02-00 2-Wire Vibration Transmitter

Description

Overview

The Bently Nevada 990-05-70-02-00 is a 990 Vibration Transmitter, a 2-wire, loop-powered device intended mainly for OEMs of centrifugal air compressors and small pumps, motors or fans that want a simple 4 to 20 mA vibration signal as the input to their machine control system. It accepts a 3300 NSv proximity probe and matching extension cable (ordered separately), conditions the signal into peak-to-peak vibration amplitude and outputs it as a proportional 4 to 20 mA signal.

In the 990-AA-BB-CC-DD order code, this unit is configured for a 0-5 mils pp (0-125 µm pp) full-scale range, a 7.0 m system length, bulkhead screw mounting and no agency approval. A transmitter provides overall vibration trending and alarming but not the diagnostic functions of a continuous monitoring system.

Key Features

  • Integrated Proximitor Sensor; no external signal conditioner required
  • Non-isolated PROX OUT terminals and coaxial connector for dynamic and gap signal diagnostics
  • Non-interacting zero and span adjustments and a Test Input pin
  • Not OK / signal defeat and power-up inhibit circuits
  • Potted construction for up to 100% condensing humidity

Bently Nevada 990-05-70-02-00 System Compatibility

The transmitter is one part of a three-part measuring chain: a 3300 NSv proximity probe, a 3300 NSv extension cable and the 990 itself. Option 70 means the electronics are matched to 7.0 m of total cable, so the probe lead and extension cable together must make up that length. The datasheet lists NSv probes with 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 or 7.0 m integral cable and 330930 extension cables of 4.0, 4.5, 6.0 or 6.5 m; the 6.0 m and 6.5 m cables pair with 1.0 m and 0.5 m probes for a 7.0 m system.

Probe choices are 330901/330902 (1/4-28 UNF, without/with armour), 330908/330909 (3/8-24 UNF), 330903/330904 (M8 × 1) and 330905/330910 (M10 × 1), plus reverse-mount probes 330906 (3/8-24) and 330907 (M10 × 1). Published performance assumes an AISI 4140 steel target. The small NSv probe tip is intended for tight locations with little side clearance, which is typical of centrifugal air compressors.

Bently Nevada 990-05-70-02-00 Ordering Code and Options

In 990-AA-BB-CC-DD, AA is the full-scale range of the 4 to 20 mA output: 04, 05, 08 or 10 for 0-4, 0-5, 0-8 or 0-10 mils peak-to-peak (100, 125, 200 or 250 µm). BB is the system length the transmitter is matched to, 50 for 5.0 m or 70 for 7.0 m of probe plus extension cable. CC is the mounting: 01 for 35 mm DIN-rail clips, 02 for bulkhead screws, 03 for both. DD is the agency approval: 00 none, 01 CSA Division 2, and 05 CSA Division 2 with ATEX Zone 0 and Zone 2 plus ABS maritime approval.

This part is therefore a 0-5 mil, 7.0 m unit with bulkhead mounting and no agency approval. DIN-rail kit 284726 can be fitted if rail mounting is needed later.

About brand

Since 1961 Bently Nevada, of Minden, Nevada, USA, has been closely tied to two things: the eddy current proximity probe and the rack-based machinery protection system. The 3500 rack is found on turbines and compressors in most large process plants.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier of Bently Nevada 3500 monitor modules, interface and communication modules, proximity probes, accelerometers and velocity transducers for operators in Oman and the GCC, with every item matched to the full part number.

Bently Nevada 3500 modules and transducers

The listed 3500 modules include the 3500/20 Rack Interface Module, the 3500/50M Tachometer, the 3500/61 Temperature and 3500/62 Process Variable monitors, the 3500/64M Dynamic Pressure monitor, the 3500/44M for aeroderivative gas turbines and the 3500/46M Hydro monitor. Reciprocating compressor monitoring is covered by the 3500/70M, 3500/72M and 3500/77M. The 3500/92 Communication Gateway and 3500/94M display link the rack to the control system. Transducers include the 3300 XL proximity probe system, the 330400 accelerometer and the 190501 Velomitor CT velocity transducer. The manufacturer's newer platform, Orbit 60, is offered as the modernization path for 3500 racks, and System 1 software handles diagnostics.

Where Bently Nevada vibration monitoring is used

Steam and gas turbines, generators, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, large pumps, hydro units and cooling tower fans in oil and gas, power generation, petrochemical and mining plants are the usual machines. Measurements include radial vibration, thrust position, speed, phase, differential expansion, bearing temperature, rod position and cylinder pressure.

Ordering Bently Nevada parts: what we need

Send the complete part number with every option field, for example 330103-00-05-10-01-00 for a probe or the 3500 module number with its option dashes, plus the matching I/O module number. For probe systems state probe series, system length and the hazardous area approval. A photo of the label avoids transcription errors, and for rack modules the firmware revision is useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 990-05-70-02-00 identify?
A 990 vibration transmitter with 0-5 mils peak-to-peak full scale, 7.0 m system length, bulkhead screw mounting and no agency approval option.
What is the difference between this and the DIN rail versions?
The mounting option: this transmitter uses bulkhead screws on a flat panel surface, while the rail versions clip onto a 35 mm DIN rail.
When is bulkhead mounting used?
On older skids and relay cabinets where a flat mounting surface is available instead of a rail.
What is the system length of this variant?
7.0 m, the longer of the two standard 990 options, for machines where the junction box is mounted away from the panel.
Is this transmitter interchangeable with the rail version?
Yes, at the loop level the transmitter is fully interchangeable, which simplifies spares holding for a plant with mixed mounting arrangements.
