Phoenix Contact MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R NAMUR Isolating Amplifier

Description

MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R Ex i NAMUR isolating amplifier, 1-channel

The MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R (item number 2865434) is an intrinsically safe isolating switch amplifier from the MACX MCR-EX-SL family. It reads NAMUR proximity sensors and mechanical contacts installed in a hazardous area, monitors the field wiring for breaks and short circuits, and passes the switching state across a safe galvanic barrier to a relay output in the safe area. It has one channel and a changeover relay contact, so the output can be used as normally open or normally closed, and the device is only 12.5 mm wide. Seven Star LLC supplies the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page summarises the manufacturer data sheet for engineers preparing an instrumentation RFQ.

What the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R designation means

  • MACX MCR: Phoenix Contact signal conditioner family for DIN rail mounting.
  • EX-SL: Ex i (intrinsically safe) input, slim housing with power bridging.
  • NAM-R: NAM-R: one NAMUR input channel with a relay (R) output.
  • MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R-SP: the push-in connection version of the same device (item 2924045).

How the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R processes the NAMUR signal

A NAMUR sensor changes its current draw instead of switching a voltage: around 1 mA or less when blocked and 2 mA or more when conductive. The MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R supplies about 8 V to the loop and measures this current against the thresholds in the data sheet. Between the thresholds is a hysteresis of less than 0.2 mA, so the output does not chatter. If the loop current falls below roughly 0.05 to 0.35 mA the device sees a line break, and if the loop resistance falls below about 100 to 360 Ω it sees a short circuit. Faults are signaled by a red flashing LED according to NE 44, and the output goes to a high-impedance state. DIP switches let the user invert the direction of action (normally open or normally closed behaviour) and enable or disable line fault detection, which matters when the field device is a plain contact without the resistors that NAMUR wiring requires.

Power and fault bridging with the DIN rail connector

Instead of wiring 24 V to each module, the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R can be supplied through the DIN rail connector (TBUS) from a power and fault signaling module such as the MACX MCR-PTB (2865625) or its push-in variant MACX MCR-PTB-SP (2924184). The same bus can carry the collective fault message. The data sheet also lists the MCR-DP divider plate (1430594), which keeps the intrinsic-safety separation distances when Ex i and non-Ex i modules sit next to each other, and the TC-2D37SUB-ADIO32-2EX-P-UNI termination carrier for connecting 16 two-channel MACX Analog Ex i conditioners to I/O cards with D-SUB connectors.

Where it fits and related types

The MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R is the single-channel version of the family. For two sensors in the same 12.5 mm width, the manufacturer offers the MACX MCR-EX-SL-2NAM-RO (2865476) with one N/O contact per channel. Each module has a push-in sibling with the suffix -SP: the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R-SP (2924045). It integrates into DIN-rail marshalling next to other MACX Analog Ex i conditioners, and it reports faults through the TBUS rail to a MACX MCR-PTB module.

Selection and ordering checklist

  • Confirm the sensor type: NAMUR proximity switch (EN 60947-5-6) or a contact, with or without resistor network.
  • Check the intrinsic-safety parameters of the field device and cable against Uo, Io and Po.
  • Decide on screw or push-in connection (MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R or MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R-SP).
  • Decide whether the output is one changeover contact relay and whether the relay ratings fit the downstream load.
  • Plan power bridging and fault signaling, and divider plates where Ex i and non-Ex i devices are neighbours.
  • Check the SIL requirement and the hardware version stated in the data sheet.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance

Snap the MACX MCR-EX-SL-NAM-R on a 35 mm DIN rail with the Ex i side clearly separated and the intrinsically safe terminals kept apart from non-intrinsically safe wiring. Set the DIP switches for the required direction of action and line fault detection before power-up, check the yellow status LED while operating the sensor by hand, and test the line fault indication by lifting a field wire. For a safety function, record the proof-test procedure and the hardware version from the data sheet in the safety file. Because the relay has a stated mechanical life of 10 million cycles, contact wear is rarely an issue but the load must stay within the ratings above.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

NAMUR isolating amplifiers are standard in oil and gas wellhead and pipeline facilities, tank-farm limit switching, valve position feedback on actuated valves, rotating-equipment skids and chemical dosing units, wherever sensors in Zone 0, 1 or 2 areas have to be connected to a PLC or DCS in a safe area. The wide ambient range from -40 to +60 °C suits marshalling cabinets in desert and offshore sites, as long as the cabinet is kept clean and dry.

Ordering Phoenix Contact components: what we need

Phoenix Contact items are ordered by a seven-digit order number together with the type designation, both printed on the side of the module. Send both, plus the quantity. If the number is unreadable, send the type text and a photo. For power supplies, state input voltage, output current and whether the unit runs in parallel or with a redundancy module. For buyers in the GCC replacing an older unit, we check the manufacturer's documentation for the listed successor type.
