Samson 44-0B Steam Pressure Reducing Valve PN 25
Description
Samson 44-0B steam pressure reducing valve: compact self-operated regulator
The Samson 44-0B is a self-operated steam pressure reducing valve from the Series 44 range. It lowers and stabilises downstream steam pressure without any air supply or electrical power, using a stainless steel operating bellows as the sensing element. The valve is open when relieved of pressure and closes as the downstream pressure rises above the set point. Set points run from 0.2 to 20 bar, the body is rated PN 25 and the valve is suitable for steam up to 200 °C. Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 44-0B in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.
Its main selling points are a very low build height, a wide and easily adjusted set point range and a choice between red brass, spheroidal graphite iron and stainless steel bodies, in threaded or flanged versions. That makes it a practical choice for steam stations on skids, heat exchangers, steam tracing headers, sterilisers and small process lines.
Reading the 44-0B type designation
- 44 – the Series 44 family of self-operated pressure regulators with an integrated bellows actuator.
- 0 – the steam pressure reducing version; the neighbouring 44-1B covers reducing duty on air, gases and liquids, and 44-6B is the excess pressure variant.
- B – the bellows-actuated generation of the series.
The data sheet does not publish a further code. Size, set point range, body material and KVS are given in the ordering text, so you specify them in words rather than through a suffix.

How the 44-0B reduces steam pressure
Steam passes through the valve in the direction of the arrow on the body. The plug position sets the free area between plug and seat. The pressure to be held constant is carried through a borehole inside the body to the operating bellows. There it becomes a force that works against the set point spring and the adjuster. If downstream pressure climbs above the setting, the bellows compresses the spring and pushes the plug towards the seat; if it falls, the spring reopens the valve.
In the balanced version a second bellows makes the plug insensitive to upstream pressure, so the downstream pressure holds well as the supply fluctuates. Unbalanced versions with a smaller KVS use a metal or soft seal. As with all proportional regulators, downstream pressure drifts slightly as load changes, so choose the valve for the actual flow rather than the largest size available.
44-0B versions, KVS values and special options
Four body and connection combinations exist. Red brass and stainless steel bodies carry the threaded ends; the stainless steel flanged body is available in DN 15 and 25 only, and the ductile iron body covers DN 15 to DN 50. The data sheet also lists optional equipment:
- Provision for a pressure gauge or an external control line (G 1/8 thread)
- Electric set point adjustment up to G 1 or DN 25, for set points up to 10 bar
- Pneumatic set point adjuster up to G 1 or DN 25
- Differential pressure regulator version up to G 1 or DN 25

Where the 44-0B fits and related Samson regulators
Within the Series 44, the 44-0B is the steam reducing valve for pressures up to PN 25. The Type 44-1B and 44-6B share the same actuator concept for air, nitrogen, other gases and liquids, and 44-6B can also hold steam pressure as an excess pressure valve. Type 44-2 is a diaphragm-actuated reducing valve for liquids and district heating, and Type 2406 is a larger excess pressure valve for gases. If you need accurate steam control from a control system, a pneumatic or electric control valve with a positioner is the alternative.
Selection and ordering checklist for the 44-0B
- Inlet and outlet steam pressure, plus the maximum steam flow in kg/h.
- Required set point; pick the range so the setting sits in the middle of it.
- Body material: red brass for general utility steam, stainless steel for corrosive or clean-steam duty, ductile iron for DN 40 and 50.
- Thread or flange connection and the pipe size, including flange standard.
- KVS value checked against the saturated steam sizing charts in the data sheet, including flow velocity and valve load limits.
- Seat type: soft PTFE seat for tight shutoff, metal seat for higher wear resistance.
- Special options such as pressure gauge boss, electric or pneumatic set point adjustment.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 44-0B
Fit the valve in a horizontal steam line with the actuator housing hanging downward, so condensate cannot collect in the bellows area. Check that the arrow on the body points with the flow, and install a strainer and a steam trap before the valve in the usual way. Open isolating valves slowly to avoid water hammer, then set the target pressure on the handwheel while watching a downstream gauge.
The regulator is low-maintenance. At each shutdown inspect seat and plug for wear, check the bellows for fatigue or scale, and verify that the set point holds. Keep a seat and plug set on the shelf for critical steam stations, and quote the type, size, KVS and serial number when ordering spares.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Regional users deploy the 44-0B on utility steam headers in refineries and gas plants, on heat exchangers and tank heating coils, in food and beverage plants, hospitals and laundries, and in desalination and power sites where auxiliary steam is reduced from a higher header. High ambient temperature and dust reduce the value of exposed actuators, so the compact, enclosed bellows design and a stainless steel body are often preferred for coastal or process areas.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

FAQ
Questions about the Samson 44-0B Steam Pressure Reducing Valve PN 25
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the Samson 44-0B used for?
It reduces and stabilises downstream steam pressure without external power. A stainless steel bellows senses outlet pressure and moves the plug, giving proportional control for set points between 0.2 and 20 bar.
02What is the maximum steam temperature?
The valve is rated for steam up to 200 °C with PN 25 construction. The ambient temperature limit at the actuator is 60 °C.
03Which body materials and sizes are offered?
Red brass CC499K and stainless steel 1.4408 bodies come with G ½, G ¾ and G 1 threads. Flanged bodies are available in DN 15, 25, 40 and 50 in ductile iron, and in DN 15 and 25 in stainless steel.
04How do I size the valve for steam?
The data sheet gives saturated steam charts for flow velocity and valve load. Read both, take the larger result as the nominal size, and check the KVS against your pressure drop.
05Can the set point be adjusted remotely?
Special versions up to G 1 or DN 25 offer electric or pneumatic set point adjustment, with the electric type for set points up to 10 bar. The standard version uses a handwheel.
