Brand: Samson
Samson Type 3766 Pneumatic Valve Positioner (3-15 psi)
Description
Type 3766 pneumatic positioner for control valves
The Samson Type 3766 is a pneumatic positioner that assigns the position of a control valve to a pneumatic control signal of 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi). It is a mechanical, force-balance device with no electronics, which makes it a durable choice for plants that still run a pneumatic control loop or that value simplicity. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 3766 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.
It can be used on single-acting or double-acting actuators, handles rated travels from 7.5 to 120 mm or opening angles up to 90 degrees, and is designed to work in any mounting position. The Type 3767 on the same data sheet is the electropneumatic version with an i/p converter in front of the same pneumatic stage.

How the Type 3766 balances forces to position a valve
The valve travel is carried to a pick-up lever that sets the force of a range spring. This is compared with the force created by the input pressure acting on a measuring diaphragm. If the set point or the valve position changes, a diaphragm lever (flapper plate) moves relative to a nozzle and the back pressure changes, which controls a booster. The booster output, the signal pressure, passes through a volume restriction to the actuator until the forces balance again. An adjustable Xp restriction and the volume restriction tune the loop.
The pick-up lever and range spring must match the rated valve travel and the nominal span of the input signal, so these two items are the main selection details. Direction of action is reversible by selecting the nozzle, and span and zero are set with separate adjusters.
Where the Type 3766 fits in an instrument-air loop
The 3766 pairs naturally with Samson pneumatic accessories. A Type 3755 volume booster speeds up actuators with a large volume, a Type 3709 lock-up valve can be attached to hold the actuator in place when supply air falls, and the Type 3767 replaces the pneumatic signal with an electric one. The optional solenoid valve lets a binary signal override the positioner and vent the actuator, so the spring moves the valve to its fail-safe position. The data sheet states that a version with a position transmitter cannot also carry limit contacts or a solenoid valve, as the transmitter fills the inner space.
Direct attachment to the Type 3277 actuator (175 to 750 cm²) gives a protected travel pick-off and a simple connection, NAMUR brackets suit IEC 60534-6-1 yokes, and a pair of universal brackets with a cam disk adapt it to the Type 3278 or other VDI/VDE 3845 rotary actuators. A VDI/VDE 3847 version permits replacement while the process runs.
Selection checklist for the Type 3766
- Control signal: confirm that the loop is pneumatic 3 to 15 psi; if not, consider the Type 3767 instead.
- Valve travel or angle, to select lever, cam disk and range spring.
- Single or double action, and whether a reversing amplifier is needed.
- Hazardous area: intrinsically safe, Zone 2 or flameproof arrangement with the Type 6116.
- Accessories: limit contacts, solenoid valve voltage, pressure gauges for supply and signal.
- Connection thread: ¼-18 NPT or G ¼.
- Low-temperature requirement, if the site is cold.
Installation, calibration and maintenance of the 3766
Mount the positioner and set the lever, cam disk and range spring according to the Samson mounting and operating instructions, connect clean supply air at 1.4 to 6 bar, and adjust zero and span against the control signal. Fine-tune the Xp band and volume restriction to remove hunting. Because the unit is purely pneumatic, regular maintenance concentrates on air quality: drain filter regulators, replace clogged filters and watch for oil in the supply, which blocks nozzles. Inspect the diaphragm and seals during scheduled shutdowns. The data sheet describes the device as low-maintenance and very insensitive to mechanical vibration.
Typical 3766 applications in Oman and the GCC
Pneumatic positioners remain in service on legacy control valves in oil and gas facilities, refineries, power stations and desalination plants across Oman and the Gulf. They are common replacements where the original unit has failed and the loop is still pneumatic, and in Zone 2 areas where intrinsically safe or Ex nA versions are specified. Heat, dust and humidity make air dryness and enclosure sealing the main concerns, so consider the filter check valve to reach IP65.

About brand
SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.
Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ
Questions about the Samson Type 3766 Pneumatic Valve Positioner (3-15
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the difference between the Type 3766 and Type 3767?
Both use the same force-balance principle. The 3766 takes a pneumatic 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi) signal, while the 3767 adds an i/p converter so it can take 0/4 to 20 mA or 1 to 5 mA.
02Is the Type 3766 single-acting or double-acting?
Either. The positioner is used directly for single-acting actuators, and a reversing amplifier produces the second opposed signal pressure for double-acting, springless actuators.
03Which hazardous-area versions are listed for the 3766?
The article code offers II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 (ATEX), CSA/FM intrinsically safe or non-incendive, IECEx Ex ia/Ex n IIC T6 and II 3G Ex nA II T6. An Ex d arrangement uses the Type 6116 i/p converter.
04What accessories can be built into the 3766?
The data sheet lists two inductive limit contacts (SJ2-SN) and a 3/2-way solenoid valve for 6, 12 or 24 V DC. A position transmitter is described but is listed as not available since March 2011.
05What air supply does the 3766 need?
Supply air is 1.4 to 6 bar (20 to 90 psi) with ISO 8573-1 particle class 4, oil class 3 and a dew point at least 10 K below the lowest ambient temperature. Signal pressure can be limited between about 2.5 and 6 bar.
