EVAPCO EAW-FD Flat-Coil Dry Cooler

Description

Flat-coil layout for lower height and simple airflow

The EVAPCO EAW-FD is the flat-coil version of the eco-Air dry cooler. Instead of arranging two coil banks in a V, it uses a single flat coil bank. The unit is dry, with no spray water, basin or fill, and heat is removed by air alone.

On the bulletin capacity page the FD range runs from 15 to 279 nominal tons, a narrower top end than the V-coil line. EVAPCO lists the flat arrangement for its low profile. Because there is no water circuit, there is also no winter basin to heat or drain, although the fluid in the coil still needs freeze protection, normally with glycol, where ambient air can fall below its freezing point.

Printed models and weights

Both motor versions appear in the FD table, which is why fan power differs between the one-fan models. Selected printed rows:

Model Motor Fans MBH Fan hp Air flow cfm Length Coil gal Ship lb Operating lb
EAW-FD91S1WK EC 1 242 4.3 18,800 6 ft 8-1/8 in 33 1,720 1,990
EAW-FD91S6WK EC 6 1,470 25.7 112,900 38 ft 8 in 140 7,930 9,090
EAW-FD15S1PB NEMA 1 431 10 29,300 6 ft 1/2 in 37 2,260 2,560
EAW-FD15S5PB NEMA 5 2,160 50 146,500 29 ft 7/8 in 129 8,790 9,860
EAW-FD15S6ZK EC 6 2,334 60 203,700 38 ft 8 in 189 11,950 13,520

Operating weight is higher than shipping weight because it includes the fluid held in the coil, which matters when sizing the support steel or roof structure. Confirm the motor version when ordering. Printed dimensions and weights may differ slightly from final drawings.

Construction, controls and selection

The flat models are presented by EVAPCO as a low profile design for elevated installations that leave clearance beneath the unit for bottom airflow. Each unit is built to be lifted in a single piece, and fork pockets are provided on flat and V units up to 19 ft. Return bend covers shield the coil bends in transit and in service.

On the electrical side, EVAPCO offers a choice of EC fans, which the bulletin describes as efficient, maintenance-free and quiet with speed control built in, and NEMA fans, direct driven, VFD ready and rated severe duty. Wiring from every motor ends at one UL Recognized terminal box. Having one connection point cuts installation time on site. A PLC panel is supplied with EC motors and a PLC and VFD panel with NEMA motors, both fitted at the factory with a single incoming power feed.

Start the selection with the highest ambient dry bulb temperature, since air cannot cool the fluid below it. Then list the fluid and glycol content, the required leaving temperature, flow, temperature drop, and any limits on height, footprint or sound. The nominal tonnage on the bulletin page is a quick screening number only, and the final rating should come from a selection at the real fluid, flow and ambient conditions. The bulletin also invites readers to visit evapco.com for catalogs and complete specifications. Check the fluid pressure drop and the coil drain and vent points before ordering. Coils leave the factory nitrogen charged, which protects the tube interior until filling.

Because the rating basis assumes a 92 F dry bulb, hotter sites need a selection made at the real design temperature, which usually means a larger unit or more fans than the nominal figure suggests. EVAPCO states that eco-Air coolers are CTI certified under Standard 201, which was extended to dry coolers in 2022. This page covers the dry EAW-FD only; the V-coil dry version is listed separately as EAW-VD.

Before ordering, compare the printed data with the actual duty, fluid, design ambient and available plan area, and confirm the weights, hoisting access and support steel against the manufacturer drawings for the exact model selected.

Using the EAW-FD in Oman and the GCC

Dry coolers are used in the region where water is scarce or costly, or where water treatment and Legionella control should be avoided, for example in data centres, generator and compressor cooling, and process cooling at remote sites. A dry cooler rejects heat only to the air, so the leaving fluid temperature can never be lower than the ambient dry-bulb temperature, and summer dry-bulb temperatures in the region can be very high. The selection must therefore be made at the project’s design dry-bulb temperature, and the process must accept a leaving fluid temperature above that value with a suitable approach.

The flat-coil layout suits sites with height limits, but it needs enough free space around and below the unit for the air supply. Avoid locations where hot exhaust air from the unit or nearby equipment can be drawn back into the coil. Dust and sand collect on finned coils and reduce capacity, so plan regular coil cleaning with methods that do not damage the fins, and consider fin coatings for coastal sites with salty air.

About brand

EVAPCO is an American manufacturer of evaporative cooling and heat transfer equipment, founded on 14 June 1976 in Baltimore, Maryland, by Bill Kahlert and Wilson Bradley. It started with five employees and one product line, evaporative condensers for industrial refrigeration, before adding cooling towers and closed circuit coolers. EVAPCO is employee-owned, headquartered in Taneytown, Maryland, and marked 50 years in June 2026.

EVAPCO product families

The range runs from factory-assembled cooling towers to larger field-erected equipment. Open cooling towers reject heat by evaporation, closed circuit coolers keep the process fluid inside a sealed coil, and evaporative condensers cool refrigerant directly for ammonia and other refrigeration plants. The eco-Air series adds dry and adiabatic coolers that use little or no water, and EVAPCO publishes engineering data bulletins for its model families.

Frequently Asked Questions

What capacity range does the FD cover?
The bulletin capacity overview shows 15 to 279 nominal tons for the FD range.
How does FD differ from VD?
The bulletin lists FD as the flat-coil arrangement and VD as the V-coil arrangement, with the same coil and casing options.
What is the rating basis?
Nominal capacity is stated for fluid cooled from 110 F to 100 F at a 92 F dry bulb temperature.
Are the fans EC or NEMA?
Both are printed in the FD table; some models list EC motors and others NEMA motors. The motor column in the table above follows the printed model data.
Is the coil pressure tested?
Yes. Coils follow ASME B31.5, are pressure tested to 110% of design working pressure and are nitrogen charged.
