Extech VB450 Pocket Vibration Meter, 10 Hz to 1500 Hz

Description

VB450 is a compact Extech vibration meter for checking motors, fans, pumps and other rotating machinery. A remote accelerometer with a magnetic base on a 0.2 m cable feeds a 3.5 digit display that shows acceleration (peak), velocity (RMS) or displacement (peak-to-peak) over a frequency range of 10 to 1500 Hz.

A screening tool for routine machine rounds

Misalignment, poor balancing and structural weakness show up as rising vibration levels. The VB450 gives a quick numeric reading in the three common units, selected with a three-position switch on top of the meter, so a technician can compare a motor, fan or pump bearing housing against previous readings or the machine standard.

Press and hold the power button while the sensor is on the machine; release it to freeze the result. The meter switches itself off after about 60 seconds. For non-ferrous surfaces the sensor can be held against the machine instead of using the magnet.

Features stated in the datasheet and manual

  • Velocity (RMS), acceleration (peak) and displacement (peak-to-peak) in one meter.
  • Remote vibration sensor with magnetic adapter on a 7.9 in (0.2 m) coiled cable.
  • Automatic data hold after the button is released; low battery indicator; auto power off.
  • Supplied with sensor, magnetic mount, 9 V battery, wrist strap and soft case; NIST calibration optional.

Ordering and limits

The datasheet lists VB450 and a NIST version, ordered by adding -NIST to the part number, which includes a calibration certificate.

The datasheet quotes displacement up to 1999 micrometres while the manual table lists up to 199.9 micrometres at 10 to 500 Hz; confirm the displacement range you need before ordering. The VB450 is a hand-held screening meter and does not provide spectrum analysis, so use it to trigger deeper analysis rather than replace it.

Safety and handling notes from the manual

Use extreme care when testing mechanical devices and do not measure on equipment whose vibration is expected to exceed the meter range. Never use the meter in a wet environment or in an atmosphere of combustible or explosive gas, protect the LCD from shock, and allow only the magnet and sensor to touch the device under test.

Replace the battery when the low battery symbol appears and remove it if the meter is stored for more than 60 days. Do not loosen the service access nut.

Applications

The datasheet names motors, bearings, fans, pumps, rotating machinery and plant maintenance. General engineering note: for Gulf utilities and process plants, taking the same readings on the same points each round, with the same sensor position, is more useful than a single isolated reading.

Field use and calibration notes

Pocket vibration meters are used in the region on routine rounds in water plants, oil and gas facilities, power stations, HVAC plant rooms and factories, to check pumps, fans, motors and compressors. The value of a vibration meter comes from consistent trending rather than from a single reading. Mark the measurement points on each machine, take readings at the same points and in the same directions on each round, and record them, so that a rising trend can be seen before a failure.

Place the magnetic base on a clean, flat steel surface close to the bearing, and avoid thin covers or guards, which give misleading readings. Compare readings with the machine maker’s guidance or the applicable vibration severity standard. Where readings rise or are unclear, a more detailed analysis with a spectrum analyzer may be needed to find the cause, such as imbalance, misalignment or bearing wear.

Arrange calibration of the meter at regular intervals, and keep the sensor cable away from sharp edges and hot surfaces.

Record each reading.
