Brand:

Magnaflux SKL-SP2 Spotcheck Visible Red Dye Penetrant

Description

Solvent-removable red dye penetrant that works in visible light

Magnaflux SKL-SP2 is a solvent-removable visible red dye penetrant from the Spotcheck range. It finds surface-breaking discontinuities with a three-step process (apply, remove, develop) that the manufacturer calls ideal for basic industrial non-destructive testing, preventive maintenance and quality checks. The vivid red indication against a white developer is read in ordinary light, so no UV lamp or dark room is needed.

SKL-SP2 is listed on QPL AMS 2644 as Type 2, Methods B, C and D. The data sheet recommends the SKD-S2 solvent-based developer for the strongest indications, and the sheet names welds, forgings, pressure vessels, castings, general metalwork and leak testing among its uses.

Features and benefits

  • Solvent removable, ISO 3452 sensitivity level 2
  • Simple three-step process; no water needed, so parts need not be dried before developer
  • Vivid, high-contrast red with good surface wetting and optimised capillary action
  • Works in visible light with no special equipment
  • Very low toxicity, low odour, no NPEs or phthalates
  • Aerosol cans designed for consistent, even coverage in the field

Ordering guide

Pack Part number
Aerosol can, case of 12 01-5155-78
1 gal / 3.78 L jug, case of 4 01-5155-35
5 gal / 18.9 L pail 01-5155-40
55 gal / 208 L drum 01-5155-45

Aerosol cans suit single repair welds and quick checks; the jug is convenient for brush or spray application on a small job and the pail or drum for production. Derived value: at 1,200 sq ft per gallon, one 3.78 L jug covers about 111 sq m, so one jug is plenty for most turnaround weld programmes.

Processing notes

SKL-SP2 is a solvent-removable system, so the excess penetrant is wiped off with a lint-free cloth moistened with a solvent remover such as SKC-S, never flushed with water, and then developed with SKD-S2. The data sheet does not print dwell times, so take them from your procedure. General practice, not from the sheet: keep the surface and the part at a stable temperature within the 5 to 52 C window and read the indications within the time given by the specification.

Applications

The sheet lists castings, forgings, welds, pressure vessels, metalworking, automotive maintenance, tubular goods, leak testing, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-porous ceramics. Defect examples include cracks, leaks, incomplete weld penetration and fusion, undercutting, slag and flux inclusions, and weld porosity. For Gulf plants this is a popular choice for outdoor welds and piping because the process needs no power supply or darkened area.

The Spotcheck three-product system side by side

SKL-SP2 is normally bought together with a cleaner and a developer. The table collects the printed data of the three Spotcheck data sheets so a buyer can size the kit; the comparison is our own summary.

Item Role Flash point Density Coverage per gallon Aerosol part number
SKC-S Cleaner and remover Above 57 F / 14 C 6.29 lb/gal 800 sq ft 01-5750-78
SKL-SP2 Visible red dye penetrant Above 200 F / 93 C 7.04 lb/gal 1,200 sq ft 01-5155-78
SKD-S2 Solvent based developer Not printed 7.5 lb/gal bulk 800 sq ft 01-5352-78

Note that the penetrant and the developer cover different areas per gallon, so the ratio of cans in a field kit is a matter of site practice, not a fixed rule.

Planning a Spotcheck visible dye inspection

A visible dye system is chosen when UV lamps and a darkened area are not practical, for example on outdoor piping or scaffolding. Before ordering, confirm that the specification accepts a visible Type 2 system at ISO 3452 sensitivity level 2, that the surface temperature is inside the 5 to 52 C usage window and that the matching cleaner and developer are included in the kit. The sheet lists SKL-SP2 on the QPL AMS 2644 list as Type 2, Methods B, C and D.

Storage and handling

The sheet gives a storage range of 10 to 30 C. Keep aerosol cases and jugs in a shaded, ventilated store, away from heat and freezing, and note the date and batch of each issue to site. With a flash point above 93 C the penetrant is much less flammable than the cleaner, but the Safety Data Sheet remains the reference for protective equipment and disposal of used cloths and waste.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the part number from the ordering guide, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC and any specification or customer procedure the shipment must reference. Mention whether the cleaner and developer are required so that the complete system can be quoted and delivered together.

Related items

The matching products are SKC-S cleaner and SKD-S2 developer, covered on their own pages, plus the wider Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) range.

Ordering note: list the pack you need (aerosol case of twelve, 1 gal jug case of four, 5 gal pail or 55 gal drum) and whether the matching SKC-S cleaner and SKD-S2 developer are required, so the complete visible dye system can be quoted together.
