ABB FBIP-21 BACnet/IP Adapter Module for ABB HVAC Drives

Description

BACnet/IP for building automation drives

The FBIP-21 brings BACnet/IP to ABB’s HVAC drives. Building management systems speak BACnet, and with this module an ACH580 or ACH480 can appear on the building network as a native device with objects for speed, status, faults and energy values.

According to the manual the module works with ACH480, ACH580 and the ACH580 E-Clipse bypass. It carries two RJ-45 ports at 10/100 Mbit/s, which allows a daisy chain of up to 50 nodes without a switch, convenient in a plant room with several drives side by side.

Network features

The documented BACnet protocol revision is 14. A built-in web interface helps during commissioning, and the manual lists the network ports in use, 80, 68 and 24576, which IT staff will want to see before opening a firewall.

The module is powered from the drive at +3.3 V, up to 400 mA, and sits in the drive option slot like other F-series adapters.

Integration checklist

If your building controller uses BACnet MS/TP instead, the ACH580 already has an embedded serial interface; the FBIP-21 is the choice when IP infrastructure and higher throughput are preferred.

Plan IP addresses, device instance numbers and the object list with the building automation contractor before power-up; the manual describes each of these settings.

Selection and planning notes

Building contractors normally supply a BACnet point list: run command, speed reference, actual speed, current, power, energy and alarm status. The FBIP-21 manual maps these to BACnet objects so the list can be checked before the first power-up. Daisy-chaining in a plant room saves switches, but a failure of one drive’s power can interrupt downstream nodes, so many designers prefer a star arrangement for larger systems.

Compatible HVAC drives such as the ACH580 appear in AC drives; the ACS580 sister platform is covered on the ABB ACS580 page. Our team can compare BACnet/IP with the embedded MS/TP port for your project.

Cyber security deserves a line in the project plan. Keep the building network separate from office traffic, change default credentials on the module’s web interface, document which ports are open and give each drive a fixed address. Record the device instance numbers in the commissioning sheet so that a replacement module can be given the same identity without a call back to the integrator. Finally, test a communication loss: the drive should behave in the way the ventilation design expects, either holding speed or falling back to a safe local reference.

Documents and quotation

Seven Star LLC supplies the FBIP-21 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AXD50000028468, revision D) is linked on this page.

Confirm before ordering: the ACH580 or ACH480 firmware level, the BACnet device instance and IP plan, the daisy-chain length and the firewall ports.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
