Axis Q6225-LE Heavy-Duty 1080p PTZ Camera with Long-Range IR
Description
A heavy-duty PTZ for large yards, ports and long perimeters
The Axis Q6225-LE is a pan-tilt-zoom camera made for harsh outdoor sites. Axis states that it meets MIL-STD-810G and NEMA TS 2, carries IK10 impact protection and IP66/IP68 ingress protection, and withstands sustained wind up to 68 m/s (245 km/h). The 1/2 inch sensor delivers 1920 x 1080 at up to 60/50 fps, and the 6.91 to 214.64 mm lens gives 31x optical zoom with autofocus and P-iris.
Long-range OptimizedIR with 850 nm LEDs reaches 400 m or more depending on the scene, so one camera can cover a laydown yard, a quay or a pipeline corridor at night without extra lighting. Lightfinder and Forensic WDR (up to 120 dB depending on scene) help with glare from floodlights, and electronic image stabilization steadies the picture on a windy mast. AXIS Object Analytics for humans and vehicles is preinstalled.

Planning power, mounting and coverage
The Q6225-LE needs High PoE (802.3bt Type 4). The box includes a one-port midspan, but a switch that supplies the required power per port can replace it. The datasheet lists a low-power profile limited to 32 W, or 53 W with IR, which also narrows the operating temperature to 0 to 55 degC, so choose the profile that suits the climate and the infrared needs. The wiper, bumper and push-pull connector are part of the package.
Mount height and distance decide whether a zoom of 31x is enough: at the maximum focal length the horizontal field of view is 2.2 degrees, which suits identification at long range but needs a stable mast. Plan guard tours and presets for gates and fence segments, and note that the camera supports autotracking and the stated analytics scenarios on the device.
Compared with a fixed bullet such as the Axis P1465-LE, a PTZ covers a wider area with one unit but only looks at one place at a time; many projects pair fixed cameras for detection with a PTZ for verification. Send the mounting position, the cable run, the video management system and the required recording days so that storage and switching can be sized together.
Key features for perimeter and site surveillance
- 31x optical zoom with autofocus: one camera can show a wide overview and then zoom in to read details at distance, reducing the number of fixed cameras needed.
- OptimizedIR: built-in long-range infrared adapts to the zoom level, so illumination stays even when zooming in on distant objects at night.
- Rugged construction: IK10 impact rating, IP66/IP68 sealing and tested to MIL-STD-810G for harsh environments.
- Analytics on the edge: AXIS Object Analytics classifies humans and vehicles, helping reduce false alarms from moving shadows or animals.
- Bandwidth control: H.265 and Zipstream reduce storage and network load, important for long recording periods.
Choosing the right position
A PTZ camera is most effective high up, with a clear line of sight over the area it guards. Masts, building corners and gantries are common choices. Consider the direction of the sun at sunrise and sunset, since a lens pointing into low sun will struggle even with wide dynamic range. Make sure the mast is stiff enough: although electronic image stabilization helps, a swaying pole at full zoom produces unusable footage. For best coverage, define presets and guard tours that cycle through gates, fences and critical assets, and link them to alarms from other systems where possible.
Detection, recognition and identification
The distance at which a person can be detected is much greater than the distance at which they can be identified. When planning coverage, decide which level of detail each zone needs and check it against the lens field of view and pixel density, not just the maximum IR distance. Axis design tools can help model this before installation.
Network and video management integration
The camera supports standard video compression formats and integrates with Axis Camera Station and many third-party video management systems. Plan network bandwidth for continuous 1080p streams at the chosen frame rate and compression, and use a managed switch with enough power budget for the camera. Secure the camera by changing default settings, keeping firmware up to date and placing cameras on a separate network segment.
Suitability for Omani and GCC sites
Ports, oil and gas facilities, logistics yards, utility substations and long pipelines in the region need cameras that tolerate heat, dust storms, high humidity and salt air. The sealed housing and impact rating are designed for these conditions; regular cleaning of the window and IR cover maintains image quality after sandstorms. Confirm that the power supply and midspan are located in a shaded or cooled enclosure, as they are usually less robust than the camera itself.
