Axis Q2101-TE Thermometric Thermal Camera for Temperature Monitoring
Description
A thermal camera that also measures temperature
The Axis Q2101-TE is a thermal camera with a 384 x 288 uncooled microbolometer (17 micrometre pixels, 8 to 14 micrometre spectral range) and built-in thermometry. Axis states an object temperature range of -40 to 350 degC, with an accuracy of plus or minus 5 degC below 120 degC and plus or minus 15 percent above it. That makes it suitable for watching conveyors, switchgear, tank areas, stockpiles or process equipment for overheating, as well as for detecting people and vehicles in total darkness.
It supports a spot temperature meter, up to 10 polygonal temperature detection areas per preset, and a thermometric guard tour of up to 256 presets when mounted on an Axis positioning unit sold separately. Early fire detection, temperature-deviation events and tampering alarms are available as event conditions, and edge-to-edge pairing lets the camera trigger a network speaker. The camera is built on ARTPEC-8 with a deep learning processing unit.

Choosing a lens and planning a temperature-monitoring scene
The three lens options trade field of view for distance. Axis calculates detection of a person at 200 m with the 7 mm lens and 567 m with the 19 mm lens, but the same table shows that identifying a person takes 25 m to 71 m. Use the wide 7 mm lens where the object is close and the view must be broad, and the 19 mm lens for long fences or distant equipment. Axis advises evaluating the real scene with its Site Designer tool because weather and background change real performance.
Temperature readings depend on object size in the image: the datasheet recommends that the monitored object cover at least 10 x 10 pixels. Choose lens and distance accordingly, and remember that emissivity and surface condition affect any thermal measurement, so verify alarm thresholds against a reference on site. For a scanning scheme with many presets, a positioning unit must be ordered separately.
The Q2101-TE itself carries no explosion-protection certificate in its datasheet; for classified areas see the Q1961-XTE listed below. Tell us the lens, frame rate (8.3 or 30 fps variant), power source and software so we can match the exact part number.

Mounting and commissioning the Q2101-TE
Mount the camera on a rigid pole, wall or structure that does not sway in wind or vibrate with nearby machinery, because even small movements shift the measurement areas away from the equipment being watched. Aim it so the monitored surfaces face the camera as directly as possible and so that hot background objects, reflective metal and the sky are kept out of the measurement polygons. Use outdoor-rated network cable and glands, seal all cable entries, and provide surge protection where long cable runs or exposed poles are involved.
During commissioning, define the spot meter and detection areas on the live image, set alarm thresholds and deviation rules, and test each event by heating or cooling a known reference where it is safe to do so. Confirm that alarms reach the video management system, the operator workstation or the paired network speaker as intended, and document the presets so that later adjustments do not break the temperature rules.
Heat, dust and humidity in Oman and the GCC
Strong sun on outdoor equipment and on the camera housing is a real factor in the Gulf. Solar loading can raise surface temperatures of tanks, pipes and stockpiles without any process fault, so set thresholds with daytime and night-time readings in mind and review them after the first summer of operation. Airborne dust and sand settle on the front window and reduce the infrared signal reaching the sensor, so clean the window gently with a soft cloth and a suitable cleaner as part of routine maintenance, and check images after sandstorms. In coastal plants with high humidity and salt, inspect mounts, fixings and cable glands for corrosion during scheduled visits, and confirm that the camera is still within its stated operating range for the location.
