Paxton 682-493 Net2 Plus 1-Door Networked Access Controller
Description
682-493 is the Paxton sales code for the Net2 Plus single-door control unit, the TCP/IP-connected controller in the Paxton Net2 access control range. It has an on-board Ethernet port, an RS485 network, two reader ports and a voltage-free relay, and it can store 50,000 users.
A networked single-door controller that keeps deciding when the network drops
Net2 Plus connects straight to a computer network through its own RJ45 socket, so no separate TCP/IP-to-RS485 converter is needed. Paxton calls it the most advanced single-door unit in the Net2 range; it keeps permitting or denying access if communications are lost and reports events to the PC once the link returns. A dedicated RS485 connection lets one unit act as the LAN interface for a wired chain of further Net2 units.
The datasheet lists six sales codes for the Net2 Plus family: this base code 682-493, two plastic-housing versions (682-528 and 682-531), two PoE+ versions (682-284 and 682-721) and one metal-cabinet version with a 12 V power supply (682-813).
Key features as printed in the datasheet
- On-board TCP/IP with 100 Mbit/s auto-MDIX Ethernet; up to 200 Ethernet devices per Net2 system, counting AirBridges and I/O boards.
- Two reader ports; up to four readers or keypads per unit, within a 500 mA total reader-port output.
- Volt-free relay, inputs for exit button, door contact, PSU fail and tamper, and an alarm and bell output.

Choosing the right Net2 Plus sales code
Start with how the unit will be powered. If a 12 V or 24 V DC supply already exists in the riser or plant room, the base code 682-493 is the entry to look at; if the door has no local supply, the datasheet lists the 12 V 2 A supply versions (682-531 plastic, 682-813 metal) and the PoE+ versions (682-284 plastic, 682-721 metal).
The datasheet allows four readers or keypads per unit but only 500 mA in total from the reader ports, so check reader current draw. Confirm the exact code, housing and power option with us before ordering.
Installation and network set-up notes
The product page states that a label on the unit shows colour-coded connections for readers and power, that diagnostic LEDs sit next to the terminals they relate to, and that end-of-line resistors are switched in rather than fitted externally. The relay is volt free, so it can switch any lock or electrical device.
Paxton advises giving each unit a fixed IP address and configuring it with the Net2 Configuration Utility; its application note APN-1006 covers configuring a Net2 Plus over TCP/IP. The datasheet lists the unit as not moisture resistant, so mount it in a dry enclosure.
Where a networked door controller fits in Oman and the GCC
Net2 Plus suits sites that already run a LAN, such as offices, hotels, clinics, schools, warehouses and plant administration blocks, where one software database controls many doors. The RS485 chain reduces the network points needed for remote doors in larger compounds.
In hot climates the +55 °C limit matters: keep the controller in an air-conditioned electrical room or sealed ventilated cabinet, not a sun-exposed outdoor box.
Related Paxton items to specify with Net2 Plus
The product page lists Net2 software (Pro) and the Net2 proximity MIFARE reader P50 as the usual system partners, and the datasheet notes Paxton or compatible third-party readers. Door hardware, exit buttons and the Net2 I/O board can be added to the same system. See the related Paxton listings in the CCTV and security category.
