Axis Q1656-DLE Radar-Video Fusion Camera for Wide-Area Intrusion Detection
Description
One device that combines a 4 MP camera and a 61 GHz radar
The Axis Q1656-DLE puts a 4 MP camera and an FMCW radar in the same housing. Radar and video analytics are combined in AXIS Object Analytics, so the camera can use radar for distance, speed and direction, and video for classification of humans and vehicles. Axis presents it for wide-area intrusion protection that works around the clock, including in darkness, fog or glare, where a video-only camera has difficulty.
Three radar profiles are listed: one-directional road monitoring, two-directional road monitoring and area monitoring. In area monitoring the radar detects a person at 5 to 60 m and a vehicle at 5 to 90 m (measured at 5 m mounting height with 25 degree tilt), and covers 2700 m2 for persons. The radar operates at 61.0 to 61.5 GHz with less than 100 mW EIRP, which Axis describes as license-free; check local radio rules before installation.

Selecting the radar profile and mounting position
Radar performance depends strongly on installation. The datasheet gives a recommended mounting height of 3.5 to 12 m and a tilt of 15 to 45 degrees, and its notes state that detection range is measured at specific height and tilt values. A fence line, a gate approach and a road need different profiles, so choose the profile first and then plan the pole position and height. Where several radars operate nearby, keep to the coexistence-zone guidance of 350 m radius and up to eight radars.
Because radar can see in any light, it reduces false alarms from shadows, animals or vegetation when it is combined with video classification of humans and vehicles. It does not replace a visible camera for evidence, so the video stream and recording remain part of the design. Pair it with a PTZ unit such as the Axis Q6315-LE for follow-up by using the radar autotracking function listed by Axis for supported cameras.
For an enquiry state the site type, the distance to be covered, the mounting height, the power source and the video management system.

Integration into a site security system
The Q1656-DLE is one element of a wider design. Before ordering, map the perimeter and areas to be protected, decide which zones need radar detection and which only need video, and check how alarms will be handled by the video management system and the operators. Using the listed ONVIF profiles or VAPIX interface, confirm that the chosen VMS can receive the analytics events and the video stream, and plan network bandwidth, recording and power for each pole.
Installation and commissioning practice
Install the unit on a rigid pole or wall within the recommended height and tilt, so that wind and vibration do not move the radar field. Keep the detection area clear of large moving objects such as flags, trees or rotating machinery where possible, and avoid mounting directly behind fences or walls that block the radar. During commissioning, set the radar profile, define the scenarios in AXIS Object Analytics, and walk-test and drive-test the area at different times of day to confirm that humans and vehicles are detected where intended and that nuisance alarms are acceptable. Record the final settings and back them up for future maintenance.
Operation in GCC conditions
Industrial sites, utilities and logistics yards in Oman and the GCC experience intense sun, high temperatures, sandstorms and coastal humidity. The stated IP66, NEMA 4X and IK10 casing and operating temperature range are a solid basis, but the installation should still be checked for direct heat load, and the weathershield and housing should be cleaned at intervals that suit local dust levels. After sandstorms, review the image and test detection again. Include these conditions, together with the profile, height and power source, in your RFQ so the proposal reflects the real site.
