A skid-mounted acetylene cylinder filling plant for 25 m3 per hour

The Rexarc Model 925 is a medium-capacity calcium carbide acetylene cylinder filling plant. Rexarc rates the plant at 25 m3 per hour and states that it charges 40 cylinders at one time. It is aimed at regions where acetylene consumption is low and transporting cylinders is costly. The plant arrives on skids, pre-piped, with the generator on one skid and the process equipment on a second skid, which keeps on-site assembly to a minimum.

Rexarc states that the plant is built and inspected to the intent of ASME Section VIII design and manufacturing practice and is designed to NFPA 51A. The generator is a medium-pressure screw-feed type that accepts graded carbide of 4 mm up to 50 mm, with the recommended size 25 x 50 mm, and acetylene is generated only when needed. Charging of a full set of cylinders takes 8 to 10 hours.

What the plant includes

Each Model 925 includes the acetylene generator with filling hopper and air-operated hoist, an air compressor, ammonia scrubber, cooler condenser, medium-pressure drier, purifier, purifier scrubber and the acetylene compressor. On the high-pressure side it includes a high-pressure drier and filter, flame arrester, back-pressure relief valve and two 40-cylinder charging manifolds with flame arresters and handwheel connections with stem check valves. Also supplied are a monitor, drainback manifold, pneumatic acetone pump, a scale for weighing cylinders and a weatherproof motor control center.

The generator carries a temperature safety instrument, water inlet control, high-water shutoff, low-water alarm, automatic carbide feeding, automatic residue discharge and over-pressure relief valves. Rexarc states that its ammonia scrubber removes 99 percent of the ammonia formed in generation, which prevents amines from clogging flame arresters and cylinders, and that carbide yield increases of up to 11 percent over low-pressure plants have been seen.

Planning and what to confirm

Plan for carbide storage kept dry, residue pits (two recommended, 4-month capacity, 14 x 15 x 1.5 m each as per the datasheet), a recirculating water supply and a shelter that prevents freezing. Rexarc provides planning guidance on the floor plan, can supply a technician for commissioning, and ships export orders containerized. Confirm the local regulatory requirements for acetylene plants, the power supply voltage and the cylinder sizes to be filled before specifying.
