Description
A three-function flashback arrestor for the regulator outlet
The GCE SAFE-GUARD-3 (FR34) is a regulator-mounted flashback arrestor for the protection of cylinder regulators, tapping points and distribution lines. It complies fully with ISO 5175-1. Its three safety functions are a sintered flame-arresting element (FA), a non-return valve (NV) and a temperature-sensitive cut-off valve (TV) that permanently cuts off the gas supply if heat reaches the unit; a dust filter protects the internals.
The SAFE-GUARD-3 sits between the regulator and the hose. It is the step up from the one-function BV 12 non-return valve, and the step below the five-function GCE SAFE-GUARD-5, which adds a pressure-sensitive cut-off and a reset mechanism.

Flow and selection
The GCE flow charts plot flow against pressure drop at several inlet pressures: for fuel gas from 0.4 to 5 bar and for oxygen from 2.5 to 15 bar. Use them to check that the arrestor will not choke a large heating nozzle. The datasheet gives these conversion coefficients for gases other than the charted one:

Fit one oxygen and one fuel-gas unit per regulator pair, with the left-hand thread on the fuel side, and replace the arrestor if it has tripped or been exposed to flame. Confirm the cylinder connection of your regulators before choosing the thread.
Flashback arrestors are safety devices with a limited life. Keep a record of installation dates, follow the manufacturer instructions for periodic inspection and leak testing, and never attempt to clean or modify the sintered element. Regulator-mounted arrestors protect the equipment upstream; torch-mounted non-return valves such as the BV 12 protect the hose, so a complete installation often uses both.

About brand
GCE (Gas Control Equipment) makes pressure regulators, flashback arrestors, torches, manifolds and valves for industrial, medical and specialty gases. It was formed in 1987 by combining the gas equipment businesses of AGA and ESAB, and its main production is in Chotěboř in the Czech Republic, with further plants in Poland and China. ESAB Welding & Cutting Products acquired GCE on 1 October 2018, bringing the business back to one of its founding parents.

GCE product series
Gas welding and cutting equipment includes the X511 and X501 hand cutting torches, the X21 cutting and welding set with its cutting attachment, multi-flame heating attachment and torch shank, the X11 and U7 torch shanks, and the FIT+ one tool-free machine cutting torch.
Regulators include the UNICONTROL single-stage and MULTISTAGE S2+ two-stage cylinder regulators, BASECONTROL SE and BE, the JETCONTROL 600 S high-pressure regulator, the ECOSAVER+ shielding gas regulator and the GS40 gas economiser for MIG, MAG and TIG welding. Safety devices include the SAFE-GUARD-1 BV 12 non-return valve and the SAFE-GUARD-3 and SAFE-GUARD-5 flashback arrestors. Outside welding, GCE also supplies equipment for medical gases and high-purity specialty gases.
