Brand:

Tektronix Keithley DMM6500 6.5-Digit Touchscreen Multimeter

Description

DMM6500 is a Keithley 6.5-digit bench and system digital multimeter, sold by Tektronix, with a 5 in. multi-touch screen, 15 measurement functions and a built-in 1 MS/s, 16-bit digitizer for voltage and current.

A bench meter that also records transients

Besides the usual DC and AC voltage and current, resistance, frequency and diode functions, the DMM6500 measures capacitance, temperature with thermocouple, thermistor and 2-, 3- and 4-wire RTD sensors, and digitizes waveforms. Eight current ranges run from 10 A down to 10 pA, which the datasheet presents for profiling battery-powered products through their sleep and active states.

Readings go into a buffer of up to 7 million values with 15 ns timestamp resolution. The same instrument can be driven with SCPI, with TSP Lua scripts run on the meter itself, or in Keithley 2000 and Keysight 34401A emulation modes, so existing test programs can often be reused unchanged.

Key features as printed in the datasheet

  • Measurement range from 100 nV and 10 pA to 1010 V and 10.1 A; resistance 1 µΩ to 120 MΩ.
  • Two-year specifications allow longer calibration cycles.
  • Optional 10-channel 2000-SCAN or 9-channel 2001-TCSCAN thermocouple card in a rear slot.
  • Optional user-installed GPIB, RS-232 or TSP-Link interface cards with six digital I/O lines.
  • Front/rear input selector, USB host for screenshots and buffers, LXI web interface.

Ordering and power cord choice

The order code is DMM6500 for the instrument itself. It is supplied with a 1757 test lead set (1000 V Cat II), a USB cable and a traceable calibration certificate. Pick a power cord option from A0 to A12, or A99 for none, to suit your socket, and decide whether you need a KTTI-GPIB, KTTI-RS232 or KTTI-TSP card and a 2000-SCAN or 2001-TCSCAN card. The scanner and communication cards are user-installable.

Use and programming notes

Allow the 30-minute warm-up before relying on rated accuracy, and keep the meter within 0 to 50 °C. Input HI is protected to 1100 V and the sense terminals to 350 V relative to LO; the LO terminal may float to 500 V peak from chassis. In 4-wire resistance, use offset compensation on ranges up to 10 kΩ. The mains fuse is 250 V, 1.25 A slow-blow, Keithley part FU-106-1.25.

Uses in Gulf service and R&D labs

In an instrument workshop the 4-wire and temperature functions suit transmitter loop checks, RTD and thermocouple simulation, and low-resistance bonding checks on small parts. Production test racks use the TSP and scanner features. As a bench instrument it carries no ingress rating or hazardous-area approval in the datasheet, so keep it indoors and away from dust and salt spray.

Leads, scanner cards and software

Keithley lists the 5804 Kelvin 10-piece lead kit, 5805 spring-loaded Kelvin probes, 5806 Kelvin clip leads, KickStart PC software and IVI and LabVIEW drivers. Keithley 2450 and 2460 SourceMeter units use the same TSP language. See the Portable Test and Measurement category.

Selection and installation notes

Test and measurement instruments are selected from the accuracy, the range and the interfaces the work needs. Allow the warm-up time, use leads and probes rated for the voltage and category of the circuit, keep the inputs inside the stated limits and keep the calibration current according to your quality system. Record the settings used for any test that must be repeated later.
