Tektronix MDO34 3 Series 4-Channel Mixed Domain Oscilloscope

Description

MDO34 is the four-channel Tektronix 3 Series Mixed Domain Oscilloscope: an oscilloscope with a built-in 1 GHz spectrum analyzer input in a case 148.6 mm deep, weighing 5.31 kg in the 1 GHz version, with an 11.6 in. capacitive touch display.

Scope, spectrum analyzer and signal source in one instrument

The 3 Series MDO combines analog waveforms, optional digital logic, optional arbitrary function generation and a dedicated spectrum analyzer channel. The datasheet lists integration as the way to save bench or rack space in manufacturing test stations and service kits, so one box can replace three instruments on a crowded bench.

The MDO34 has four analog channels and is offered in 100 MHz, 200 MHz, 350 MHz, 500 MHz and 1 GHz bandwidth versions, upgradable later by software key up to 500 MHz in the field (1 GHz upgrades need a Tektronix service centre). Every channel records 10 M points, and FastAcq reaches more than 280,000 waveforms per second on the 1 GHz models.

Key features from the datasheet

  • Spectrum analyzer 9 kHz to 1 GHz as standard, or 9 kHz to 3 GHz with option 3-SA3, with up to 3 GHz capture bandwidth.
  • Optional 16 digital channels (3-MSO) with 121.2 ps MagniVu timing resolution.
  • Optional 50 MHz arbitrary function generator (3-AFG) with 13 predefined waveforms and 128 k arbitrary record.
  • Standard TekVPI passive probes with 3.9 pF loading; 250, 500 MHz or 1 GHz depending on model.
  • Free 4-digit DVM and 5-digit frequency counter after product registration.

How to choose the options

Choose the MDO34 when you need four analog inputs next to the RF input; the two-channel MDO32 adds an auxiliary trigger input instead. Instrument options are 3-AFG, 3-MSO, 3-SA3 and 3-SEC (password-protected ports and firmware update). Analysis options are sold per bus: 3-SREMBD (I2C, SPI), 3-SRCOMP (RS-232/422/485/UART), 3-SRAUTO (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, FlexRay), 3-SRUSB2, 3-SRAUDIO, 3-SRAERO (MIL-STD-1553, ARINC429) and 3-PWR, or the 3-BND bundle. Each can be added later as SUP3 software keys tied to the serial number. State the bandwidth when enquiring.

Operating notes

Leave 50.8 mm of free space on the right side and at the rear for cooling. The 50 Ω paths accept only 5 V RMS, so use the 1 MΩ path for anything above that. A TPA-N-PRE preamplifier adds 12 dB nominal gain from 9 kHz to 6 GHz for small signals, but reduces the maximum DC input to ±20 V.

Where it fits in Gulf workshops and labs

Radio-frequency checks on telemetry radios, remote-terminal-unit links and switch-mode supplies are typical uses for the spectrum analyzer, since it can show which harmonic is radiating while the scope shows the time-domain cause. Service teams working on generator controllers and drives can use CAN and power-analysis options. The instrument operates from -10 to +55 °C and is a laboratory unit: no ingress or hazardous-area rating is printed.

Probes and add-ons

Tektronix lists TPP0250, TPP0500B and TPP1000 passive probes, TDP0500 and TDP1000 differential probes, THDP0200 and TMDP0200 high-voltage differential probes, TCP0030A current probes, near-field probe set 119-4146-00, the RM3 rackmount kit and HC3 or SC3 transit cases. See the Portable Test and Measurement category.
