Samson 6111 i/p Converter, Rail and Offshore Field Unit
Description
Samson 6111 i/p converter, rail-mounting and offshore field unit
The Samson 6111 is a compact i/p converter that changes a load-independent 4 to 20 mA signal into a proportional pneumatic signal, 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi) as standard. Unlike the valve-mounted 6116, the 6111 is built mainly for panel and cabinet use: a plastic-housed rail-mounting unit on a 35 mm top-hat rail, plus a stainless steel field unit with a bracket for offshore and harsh outdoor service.
Both versions carry the same pneumatic core: an i/p module with a downstream volume booster, so that even a small current can drive a pneumatic positioner or actuator with useful air flow. Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 6111 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the 6111 produces its pneumatic output
A current through a plunger coil makes a force that is balanced on a beam against back-pressure from a nozzle and flapper. The nozzle is fed from the output itself, which makes the device self-balancing. The supply air first enters the bottom chamber of a volume booster, and the diaphragm position decides how much air passes to the output. An offset spring means the output never falls below about 100 mbar at 0 mA, and the switch-off electronics can be enabled when the input drops under a defined current so the output vents.
Exchangeable i/p modules make field service easy: the module can be swapped without replacing the housing, and the zero and span adjusters on the front cover are used for calibration.
Where the 6111 fits and related Samson parts
The rail-mounting 6111 is usually installed in a marshalling cabinet or local panel with several converters side by side. A supply air manifold is available as an accessory for 3, 4, 5 or 6 converters, with versions for screw plugs, a 0 to 10 bar gauge or an air blocker, and hose push-on or screw fittings. The field unit is chosen when the converter has to sit near the valve outdoors. Related parts are the 6116 valve-mount converter, the 6126 and 6132/6134 converters, and positioners from the Series 3730.
6111 selection and ordering checklist
- Rail unit or offshore field unit, and the pneumatic fitting style.
- Input range, split-range requirement and load available on the control output.
- Output range, with the module letter if a special range with the 6112 module is needed.
- ATEX Ex ia or Ex nA requirement and the degree of protection (IP20 or IP65).
- Supply air manifold size (3 to 6 converters) and the fittings for hoses of 4/6 mm and 8/10 mm.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 6111
Snap the rail unit on a 35 mm top-hat rail or screw it to a wall, connect the two-pole terminal and attach the air hoses. If the unit is installed in a position other than horizontal the zero point shifts by up to 3.5 %, so use the zero adjuster. Supply air must follow ISO 8573-1 for particles, oil and water, and the pressure must stay at least 0.4 bar above the highest signal.
For commissioning, apply 4 mA, adjust zero until the output reads the lower range, then apply 20 mA and set the span. Because air consumption is low and there are no wearing parts besides the module and diaphragms, upkeep is mostly about clean dry air.
Typical applications of the 6111 in Oman and the GCC
Panel-mounted converters are common in older gas plants, pumping stations and utilities where valves are still pneumatic and the DCS output must be turned into air pressure. The offshore field unit with a stainless housing is a fit for platforms, jetties and coastal desalination sites where salt spray attacks painted aluminum. In hot, dusty climates, the IP65 unit keeps electronics sealed, and ambient up to 70 °C covers shaded outdoor cabinets.

About brand
SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.
Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ
Questions about the Samson 6111 i/p Converter, Rail and Offshore Field
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the difference between the 6111 and the 6116?
Both convert 4 to 20 mA into air pressure. The 6111 is designed as a rail-mounting unit or an offshore field unit, while the 6116 is a valve-mount converter in an aluminum housing with several Ex versions.
02What housing options does the 6111 have?
The rail-mounting unit has a glass-fiber-reinforced polyamide housing at IP20, and the field unit has a stainless steel 1.4581 housing at IP65 with a mounting bracket.
03Can several 6111 units share one air supply?
Yes. Supply air manifolds are offered for 3, 4, 5 or 6 converters, with optional pressure gauge and air blocker.
04What output ranges are possible?
The standard is 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi). Using the 6112 i/p module, special ranges up to 8 bar maximum can be set to customer specification.
05What explosion protection does it have?
The datasheet lists ATEX II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 and II 3G Ex nA II T6. For Ex nA use the rail-mounting unit must be installed in a housing of at least IP54.
